For nearly a decade, Tycho has been known as the musical alias of Scott Hansen, but with the release of Awake – his second LP for Ghostly International – the solo project has evolved into a three-piece band. Relating closer to post-rock than ambient soundscapes, the record is situated in the present, sounding more like Hansen than drawing from his influences. “This is, in many ways, the first true Tycho record.”

Following 2011’s Dive LP, the San Francisco-based designer toured extensively, and with a full band on stage, his sound coalesced into a percussive, organic whole. Zac Brown (guitars, bass) rejoined Scott on the road for this tour, but it was the particular addition of Rory O’Connor’s live drumming that ultimately sent Hansen back to the studio with a more precise vision. “After the tour, I decided that I wanted to capture the more energetic, driven sound of the live show on the next album,” Hansen recalls. Bringing musicians into Tycho’s creative process was a step towards expanding his own songwriting and advancing the project beyond its current sound.

In a cabin near Tahoe last winter, Zac and Scott began fleshing out the structure of the new record, but it wasn’t until they set up shop in the hills of Santa Cruz with Rory that it all fell into place. “It crystallized the vision of how the drums would come to the forefront on this record,” says Hansen. The sound was much more stripped-down and concise with more organic instruments in the fold. Songs like “Montana” and “Awake” are a departure from Tycho’s previous material – unique to the group effort poured into the songs on the new record – while “See” and “Dye” echo ideas from previous works, bridging a middle ground between the old and new. Working with Count Eldridge, who also engineered Dive, the team could fixate on the pulses that Tycho might previously layer under synthesizers and exhume them with distinct bass and guitar patterns.

Also known for his design work as ISO50, Hansen’s visual and sonic efforts have dovetailed throughout the course of his career. “This is the first time in my life I've dropped everything to focus on one artistic pursuit,” notes Hansen. Previous Tycho releases came to fruition when an amalgam of songs were nearing completion, but Awake is where music becomes the focus and true expression becomes the result.

Listening to the music of Mitch Murder is something that warrants you’re full attention. You don’t simultaneously wash your dishes or hang out with friends, NO! You close your eyes or you find somewhere with fresh air and a view to allow yourself to aurally experience the infinite landscapes and scenarios that Mitch presents to your eardrums. If you were born around the early 80’s, you're instantly hit with nostalgia with the smells and emotions of your childhood, but that’s just the start. One minute you may find yourself coming up on an enemies hideout with Mr.T and the rest of the A*team, the next minute you'll be speeding away on a stolen top-secret motorcycle with a microchip in your pocket. Soon enough the dark of the night vanishes as you land face first on the sands of Venice Beach, 1984. As far as the eye can see there's bikini babes, freestyle skateboarding, remote control cars and a new dance called break-dancing. 

The b-boys popping moves create an atmospheric breakdown of all reality and suddenly you're thrusted into an 8-bit nintendo world and your arm has been rigged with a plasma blaster. Good thing you have your faithful robotic dog by your side. As the album concludes, the feels are endless as you round the last base and finally touch home plate to win the tournament in the 9th inning. Life slows to a halt as you see your crush in the stands. Your eyes lock, and before you know it you’ve spent hours that felt like minutes walking on the beach together and watching the sun set. As she tells you stories about her favorite music, her deadbeat dad and how you should run away together, the alarm on your calculator watch suddenly goes off. You glance down at your wrist and she and the world around her disappears, the ring of the watch morphs into the sound of your buzzing alarm clock flashing 8:00AM. It was all a dream… that is until the next time you listen to Mitch Murder’s “Interceptor”.

It’s based around a couple of sultry, sweet jazz licks underlined by an abysmal sub. Watch out for the switch up that blends the rough with the smooth, what more could you ask for?

Regal Records have been introducing top quality drum and bass with their first five releases - and now comes their long-awaited first EP. 

‘The Crown Jewels’ features new blood and familiar faces.  Exel, from Exeter, is one of the new recruits alongside long-time label friend Tomek N from London and a special collaboration from Pdex &amp; Retrospekt, who hail from St Albans and Cardiff. Livewire, from Stroud, is back following his debut single ‘Don’t Let Go’.

Exel starts off the EP with ‘The Hitcher’, a no nonsense affair that gets straight to the point. The shrieking lead invades your ears, moves your body and shouts for more. It’s original, simple and hugely effective. Track number two is ‘Biography’ by Tomek N. The space-age effects and dreamy piano chords take you to a beautiful place, creating a crystal clear atmosphere for those shivers-down-the-spine moments.

Third in store is ‘Dizzy’ by Pdex &amp; Retrospekt, the first Regal release to feature a video. This production goes back to the roots with a strong jungle influence and raw electro sound.  It’s eccentric, slightly crazy and like nothing we’ve heard before. We finish the EP with ‘Hotline’ by Livewire. Tense strings keep you on edge as the sense of unpredictability slowly rises until; finally, the gritty low end comes sliding in to give you a rude awakening. 

With these four tracks, Regal keeps the bar high, bass low and beats pristine. ‘The Crown Jewels’ launch the year in dazzling style; expect more young up and coming talent very soon. Regal Records have big things in store.

Off the back off the well received 'Crown Jewels EP' Regal are back with their second EP release of 2012. Introducing Ad Gannon, a 21-year-old producer from South East London, making a drum & bass debut on Regal Records, specialising in only the best and most promising young talent in the scene.

REG007 kicks off with the title track 'Sentient' which keeps it rough from the start. Not for the lightweights, the build-up delivers what it promises. With a dirty bassline and techno-infused effects, this monster of a tune is in the twilight zone between drum & bass and drumstep, flaunting the production genius of Ad Gannon. Keeping the hopes high, 'Black Light' delivers a slightly more lighthearted dance anthem, with equally much sound swagger. With influences in early 2000s drum & bass, this tune is jazzy and captivating, luring us into a certain dance-induced euphoric haze. Absolutely sublime.

Third in store we have 'Bad Trip'. There is a lot going on in this fast-paced roller, yet the simplicity of the top melody makes it catchy and undeniably suitable for dance floors. It is impossible to ignore the energy, better just give in and let the music take you on its own trip. To round off the EP 'Space Snake' is an eclectic mix of a hint of hardcore influence, industrial basslines, slowed down broken beats and psychedelic use of vocals, culminating in another serious roller.

This release is nothing but a proof of a serious young talent, that is Ad Gannon. Already getting recognition and DJ support from the likes of Andy C, Cyantific, DC Breaks, Bailey, to name a few. Watch this space for more promising talent brought to you by Regal Records.
