Hailing from Minneapolis, Tanya Leigh is a producer, noise designer and DJ specializing in the darker side of industrial techno. Since the age of five she has been active in music including live performance, teaching and label management. Her debut EP on Omen Recordings, "Origin," pushes the boundaries for modern techno. She has performed at underground events across the North American continent.

This particular set was first debuted as part of Research & Development's ongoing live stream series. Initially scheduled for a February appearance, we experienced some technical difficulties with Tanya's video. After a few failed attempts, we decided to reschedule for Tanya Leigh for March. It's a powerhouse set and we're very happy to include it as an audio only installment into our mix series.

RND 026 - Tanya Leigh

Split #1 marks the debut of a new vinyl series, to be hosted on the Various Artists catalogue of Pi Electronics. The split series will be bringing two artists on the same vinyl, with this very first release presenting music by Greek producers Fragedis and Nemmett.

Coming from different backgrounds of electronic music, prolific figure of the Cretan islands’ dance scene, Fragedis and one of the Athenean founding members of the ᾽π᾽ crew, Nemmett, contribute their sharpest weapons to this release.

On the A side, Fragedis delivers a techno/breaks cut of dystopian melodies and vocal samples with his opening track “Flantza”. His second track, “Klirish” blends industrial leaning percussion with Detroit techno flavored synths.

On the flip side, Nemmett returns with his trademark industrial / breaks sound, in a hypnotic, rap vocal atmosphere with the track “Altars”. His broken beat influences go more noise with his second track “Teeth”, which concludes the B side of the vinyl.

Exclusive: The “excerpt” version of 'Teeth' is available only on the Pi Electronics Bandcamp page. This is also the track we premiere today; An excellent intro piece, characterised by powerful and obscure textures, ceremonial drums, edgy pads, all intertwined with its diabolic vocals. 'Teeth' (excerpt) is an imposing soundtrack of a dystopia.

Created in the summer of 1992 by Belgian/German Patrick Stevens (°1973), hypnoskull was in its first years of existence active in the international tape scene of post-industrial music. Releasing full tapes on labels all around the globe, Hypnoskull rapidly became a visible project in the international underground scene of experimental electronic music. When Stevens started recording techno in 1994 and got signed at the famous Belgian label KK records, resulting in appearances in the nineties techno scene and clubs under various aliases, he as well started to experiment injecting 4/4 beats and structures into the hypnoskull biotope resulting in the signing of the project at German label Anti-Zen and Hymen records. Ever since 1997, the expanding discography was mainly released by the cult label. Considered as one of the pioneers in mixing both techno as well as ‘industrial’ and ‘noise’ elements in the nineties, his founding member status of the project Sonar, and collaborations with various other producers, it may not come as a surprise that the hypnoskull project in 2021 still gets a lot of attention in the realms of industrial techno. In the last decade, hypnoskull expanded regular club sets and shows with theatrical performances where he collaborates with contemporary choreographers, dancers, theatre actors, directors, and video-artists in different surroundings. Last but not least, hypnoskull’s highly political content and views, as well as an explicit anti-business mentality often caused and still cause discussion feeding his status as enfant terrible of both post-industrial as well as underground techno scenes.
