Leedz Edutainment has grown into an impeccable, unparalleled platform for Hip-Hop artists who either reside in or come through Boston. Over the years, CEO Ned Wellbery has worked painstakingly to showcase artists on stage and in the studio, with the latter coming in the form of acclaimed mixtapes and compilations. And to say Leedz has its strongest showing yet with 'Eastern Standard' would be a massive understatement. The compilation is absolutely loaded with bangers, and as the title suggests, not only sets the standard, but raises the bar for projects of this caliber that showcase such a broad brushstroke of content and talent.

Wellbery made sure of that by setting out to do something different with ES. “I wanted to have artists from all the eastern standard time zone states, coming together under one cohesive sound/theme,” he explains. “I always loved compilations that did that like ‘Soul In The Hole,’ ‘Belly,’ and ‘Judgment Night.’ It seems to be a dying artform these days.”

Leedz breathes plenty of life back into the approach with 21 tracks that highlight some of the finest artists from the EST area, all of whom are guided by the incredible production skills of The Arcitype. while fellow homegrown talent Teddy Roxpin contributes to several tracks as well. 

The result is a cohesive, grounded listening experience that also treads into varying realms under the Hip-Hop umbrella. Nerd-core kingpin Mega Ran flexes his muscles on the hard-hitting opening track, “The East Coast,” while the album’s debut leak, “The Motions” is a crash course in lyricism, with blistering rhymes courtesy of Rite Hook and Chris Rivers, the former of which lends his pen game for a compelling hook about rising above the industry snakes and staying true to yourself and your artistry. Just a few tracks later, though, Cam Meekins, Sap, and Michael Christmas are on the braggadocio tip on “Never Lived It,”while Copywrite gets super-creative with “Izzy Dead.”

As Rite Hook continues to prep his next full-length project (‘Modify'), the Boston emcee delivers another standout track with, “The Motions.” It’s an anthem for anyone tired of the bullsh*t and verbal garbage that can too often weigh us down.

The track is fueled by a piano-laced slapper courtesy of The Arcitype, who also resides in Boston and has worked with the likes of Termanology, Slaine, Reks and more. But it’s not an all-Beantown-everything affair on here, because Hook is joined on “The Motions” by New York spitter, Chris Rivers (aka Big Pun’s son). The Big Apple rapper does his namesake proud with a verse littered with slick, blistering rhymes that match the track’s theme of rising above the snakes and staying true to both yourself and your artistry.

Since 2004, the team at Leedz Edutainment has put on for Hip-Hop from across the map. Whether it’s an up-and-coming cat from the New England area or a legendary emcee, Leedz’ placement as a top-tier promotion crew is well-known. And their new compilation, Eastern Standard, proves exactly that as it pulls together a variety of dope Hip-Hop acts with roots on the East Coast.

It’s only fitting, then, that the project’s lead single is “The East Coast,” a hard-nosed head-nodder from Philadelphia native and renown Nerdcore rapper, Mega Ran. While he’s well known for his upbeat disposition on social media and more narrative-heavy joints, Ran can go toe-to-toe with the grittier spitters, too. 

At least, that’s what he brings on this slapper produced by Boston-based artist The Arcitype, with cuts accompanied by DJ Slipwax who works in some slick scratched vocals from The Roots’ Black Thought. “The East Coast” depicts a reality that Ran and plenty of others have experienced, from the fact that damn near “everybody can rock a mic/ and somehow 7 on 1 is the make up of a proper fight.”

Two of New York’s finest young talents, JSWISS and Jared Evan, connect on the soulful and meditative “Glass Case,” which is the second leak taken from Leedz Edutainment’s upcoming 'Eastern Standard' compilation. 

Where Philly native Mega Ran dropped his hard-nosed head-nodder, “The East Coast,” as the project’s inaugural single, JSWISS and Evan kick back and get introspective on “Glass Case.” Despite being so different topically, there’s a connection between the two cuts, which is the strong production of The Arcitype. 

For this track, The Arcitype supplies his collaborators with a melodic Boom bap canvas, which they definitely use to their advantage. JSWISS’ rhymes dive deep into the concept of being pigeonholed, both in art and in life, while Evan’s vocals evoke some emotional and inner turmoil. It’s a fresh turn for JSWISS especially, given that he just dropped a summer-ready new EP, No Music. Evan appears to be in the lab too, though, if his tweets are any indication. And if not, his fans have a lot to love on “Glass Case” (and here’s hoping he and JSWISS work together again!).

Take a trip to Pro Era rapper Aaron Rose’s stomping grounds on “Parkside Ave,” the grimy new single from his much anticipated new EP, 'Elixir.'

Whereas previous single “Swank Corleone” was a straight-up banger, “Parkside Ave” showcases the Brooklyn artist’s ability to flow effortlessly over a grittier instrumental. It comes courtesy of J57, who provided a majority of the beats on 'Elixir.' And on this track, his production is all murk and head-nodding drums.

Of course, the artist formerly known as A La $ole uses the Boom bap backdrop to his advantage, especially when nearly blacking out during the final verse. It’s another impressive display of just how technically gifted Rose is as an emcee, but more importantly, it’s another reminder that Elixir is shaping up to be one of the year’s finest Hip-Hop releases.

“Parkside Ave” can now be streamed, and is available for download as the second instant grat track off the iTunes pre-order for 'Elixir,' which drops next Friday, December 16th, via Coalmine Records.

With 'Elixir' now available, Aaron Rose shares one of the project's strongest and most personal songs, “The Art of Sole,” boasting impeccable production from J57.

The track follows the more bombastic “Swank Corleone” and militaristic “Parkside Ave,” and it serves to further demonstrate the talents of the Brooklyn rapper formerly known as A La $ole. That’s because Rose uses his rhymes to tackle a number of topics close to him. He fires verbal darts at critics who have tried to pigeonhole his artistry, and later shows love to his late friend/Pro Era brother, Capital STEEZ (RIP).

It’s all soundtracked by acclaimed producer and fellow Brooklynite J57. His work behind the boards absolutely shines here as he serves up a Pete Rock-reminiscent instrumental, which boasts slick horns and crunchy percussion. It’s the perfect backdrop for the Pro Era rapper, who bares his soul (no pun intended) while again flaunting his immense breath control.

‘Molotov’ represents the best elements of its creators, Brooklyn rapper, Saga and Chicago producer, Thelonious Martin. The rhymes are potent and powerful, taking down everyone from cynics to haters, wack emcees, and inner demons. And the instrumentals serve to bring those words to life by way of head-nodding percussion, and slick sample flips.

Because it was crafted by one rapper and one producer, ‘Molotov’ is especially effective, and have made it clear why their approach works so well, especially as a duo. The 12 tracks move in and out of each other seamlessly, while tackling a variety of sounds and subject matter, all with an effective supporting cast of notable features. Like the one-two punch of the straight-up banger “Karma,” which features a fired-up Freddie Gibbs, and the Fashawn-assisted lead single, “Yesterday.” 

“With Molotov, it was about maintaining the level of quality I'm known for,” the producer says, noting that it all started with the two sending tracks back and forth. “As the project was coming along, we started building the proper chemistry to make this special.”

Saga agreed, calling the project’s conception “organic." It was that unrestrained vibe that he says “allowed me to be free with my thought process, and write for the moment.” As a result, he was able to explore new and intriguing ideas, like how “chaos is the end result of a long process of inner discontent within our own lives.” And you can hear him eloquently rhyme about this subject on "Misunderstood," his favorite cut on the 12 track LP.

And the music doesn’t stop with ‘Molotov’’s release in February. The album will also be available on vinyl in April, courtesy of Coalmine Records. This falls prior to the duo’s departure for Europe, where they will embark on a multi-city tour in promotion for the LP, in late May/early June.

Never Mind (feat. The Mind)

Boston Hip-Hop mainstay Lucky Dice has been a force in his hometown’s scene for more than two decades, dropping a slew of notable mixtapes, singles, and guest features. And with 'M.O.S.A. (Memoirs of a Starving Artist),' he channels his experience and discerning talents into a passionately crafted project that serves as his proper debut album.

Fans got a taste of the record in the first half of 2016, when Dice dropped his fantastic street single, “The Underground,” featuring Chi Knox and frequent collaborator REKS. From there, the rap community was waiting on what was next while the emcee continued toiling away and perfecting 'M.O.S.A.' The arrival of this winter’s raw and honest “Memoirs” revealed that Dice was ready to bring his album to the masses—and yes, it’s finally here.

The end result is an early contender for one of the year’s best rap releases, because Dice weaves a gripping tale across these 11 tracks. Boston’s Hip-Hop promotional powerhouse, Leedz Edutainment shares another banger from their upcoming 'Eastern Standard' project with “Never Lived It,” a party-ready and playful collaboration that features Cam Meekins, Sap, and Michael Christmas. 

This latest leak from ES features boisterous, drunken production from the Arcitype, who actually provided the instrumentals for the large majority of the compilation. And his stumbling, fun-as-hell beat is the perfect setting for these three younger and gifted artists from up and down the East coast. While Cam and Michael are holding it down for Boston, Sap splits his time between Delaware and Florida.

Fittingly, Sap also splits his time between talents, as he’s becoming more well known for his rhyming but you may know his production work from collaborations with Mac Miller, The Game, and Juicy J. Sap’s more direct and raw bars are a natural pairing for his Beantown contemporaries, who deliver standout boasts and super-slick wordplay.

Boston rap heavy-hitter Slaine reveals the stark and politically charged new video for “Source of Power,” a Teddy Roxpin-produced banger off Leedz Edutainment’s latest compilation, 'Eastern Standard.'

It’s fitting that the two releases—the video and the compilation—arrive on the same day, because Slaine and Leedz are two of the biggest names in Boston Hip-Hop. Incidentally, their rise to prominence are interwoven, as Leedz played a hand in Slaine’s acclaimed mixtape series, 'The White Man is the Devil,' while simultaneously playing a pivotal role in developing the city’s Hip-Hop scene. Many know Slaine for his alignment with super group, La Coka Nostra—which also includes members DJ Lethal, Danny Boy, and Ill Bill—as well as his big screen appearances on Gone Baby Gone, Killing Them Softly, Central Intelligence, and most notably as one of the four bank robbers in Ben Affleck’s box office hit, The Town. Therefore it’s only natural that the two would join forces once again for the first debut visual installment off the 21 track compilation.

And although the visuals are brimming with violent imagery of war and hardship, the purpose of the song, according to Slaine, is to question the false truths depicted by mankind’s ongoing battle for power. “We seem to have this human condition where we seek power and validation from outside sources when really we have the ultimate power in and around us at all times,” he says. 

This notion is highlighted by Slaine’s gripping final verse: “Is it fear that we suffer from or lack of it?/ Where do we go now? Who do we turn to?/ When does it slow down? Who do we learn through?/ Through a history of imperious acts/ I still move with my spirit intact.” These words are all brought to life by director Ben Proulx for Project 2 Studios who utilizes harsh but necessary imagery from various conflicts our world has faced over the years.
