Created Applied Pressure (Austin, TX) in 2011 to help bring the beat oriented electronic/non electronic music to more of a forefront for Texas.  Applied Pressure has hosted a slew of artists such as Prefuse 73, Jonwayne, Sons of The Morning, Gaslamp Killer, Gonjasufi, Mophono, Shigeto, Dam Funk, Com Truise, B. Lewis, Low Limit, Devonwho, Nosaj Thing, Daedelus, Dnae Beats, Sonnymoon, Rustie, etc......

 
A long time fan/collector/purveyor of that deep, raw, and psychedelic sound with a heavy passion for the drums, this mix crafts together about 55 artists he feels encapsulate that timeless sound and vibe spanning from the 1960's till today.

Solid Steel in association with Serato (4th September) In Hour 1 our guest is Mophono who released his new EP 'M.O.3.' on DJ Shadow's Liquid Amber label last month. The fellow Bay Area producer digs deep with a mix featuring music from Death Grips, Flako, Broadcast, Doris Norton, Kaytranada, Coldcut and his track 'Murder Man alongside Gaslamp Killer. He told us;
'When I set out to do the Solid Steel mix, I envisioned 3 main chapter structures nice and tidy that I could weave material from the past and present.
• drum machines old and new with an industrial and post punk stain of disapproval
• vintage library moog robot world of radio transmission experimentation and learning
• international psych madness performed by new and old prog rhythm sections
After getting started on the mix, immediately I realized how tough the struggle would be. Soon I would be aggressively wrestling these beasts into submission - before what I had seen as unique treasures to cherish and behold, instantly changed into nonconforming monster hybrids, making it impossible to compartmentalize them in any way.
Looking past the filth and run off, I saw beauty in their unruliness and chopped and scratched them to bits and pieces. Thanks for listening'

This ain’t another gaggle of bearded southern sons fleeing their collective suburban upbringings and collegiate music education. There aren’t the usual clichés about drinking, honkytonks, and heartbreak. These are, after all, the same Black Lips who rescued the waning garage punk subgenre by not sounding or dressing their musical predecessors. Atlanta underground rock provocateurs Black Lips reveal video for new single ‘Rumbler’ from their new album ‘Sing In A World That’s Falling Apart’.
 
Boasting an unapologetic southern-fried twang, the twelve track collection marks the quintet’s most pronounced dalliance with country music yet, with a clang and harmony that is unmistakably the inimitable sound and feel of the Black Lips. While the songcraft and playing is more sophisticated, Black Lips were determined to return to the raw sound roots that marked their early efforts. Recorded and co-produced with Nic Jodoin at Laurel Canyon’s legendary, newly reopened Valentine Recording Studios (which played host to Beach Boys and Bing Crosby before shuttering in 1979) without Pro-Tools and other contemporary technology, the band banged the album out directly to tape quickly and cheaply, resulting in their grimiest, most dangerous, and best collection of songs since the aughts.

The band’s stylistic evolution and matured approach to musicianship and writing is, in part, due to the seismic line-up shifts they have undergone over the last half decade. Worn down after a decade of prolific touring and recording, longtime guitarist Ian St Pé left the group in 2014, followed shortly thereafter by original drummer Joe Bradley. Jeweller/actress (and now Gucci muse) Zumi Rosow, whose sax skronk, flamboyant style, and wild stage presence had augmented the team before the duo’s departure, assumed a bigger writing and performance role in their absence. Soon drummer Oakley Munson from The Witnesses brought a new backbeat and unique backing vocal harmony into the fold. Last year the quintet was rounded out by guitarist Jeff Clarke of Demon’s Claws. The newly forged partnership, all of whom collaborate as songwriters, vocalists, and instrumentalists, has breathed new life into their sound. The result is akin to the radiance of the impulsive, wild nights where you find yourself two-stepping into the unknown.
 
‘Sing In A World That’s Falling Apart’ is released 24th January via Fire Records/Vice on limited edition red vinyl with die cut sleeve, standard LP and CD.

Welcome to Tam Tam Land. No Bad Days returns after a spell in hibernation, looking to Seoul for NBD007: a debut record from the city’s exciting new talent, @closetyi.

Opening with ‘Honeymoon Junction’, we are greeted by the signature floaty yet punchy sound that typifies the mantra of No Bad Days; but around the halfway mark, an abrupt eeriness ambience washes over the track, letting you know this isn’t going to be necessarily the cheery cruise you expected. ‘Circle Dance’ is next on the A side which is more of a club-focused track in structure, though accented with Closet Yi. Birds chirp and a soft Korean intonation drifts in and out of the mix, luring us deeper into the depths of the island.

Hopping over to the B side we arrive at the climax of ‘Tam Tam Land’ with the thumping excess of ‘Basalt (玄武岩)’. Closet Yi flexes her skills in producing a peak time acid-tropische-prog-banger to stand up with the greats, filling the entire flip side. It brings to a close the whistlestop tour of her world, real and imagined. It also begins the first of many No Bad Days releases to come in 2020.

FBi and triple j radio host, co-founder of NECTAR, ‘Pure Space’ label boss, DJ and Producer - Andy Garvey is a leading force in the Australian scene. Following her debut EP in 2019, we are delighted to have her releasing again on Lobster Theremin. Garvey brings machine funk, acid alchemy and tripped out sounds to Lobster UNDR with the excellent​ ‘C​omplex Clarity’ E​P​.

‘Red Stars’ is an exploration through mind-warping cosmic funk and tangy acid lines, slipping into the pacey yet melancholic space-jam, ‘Mind Games’. Next, laid-back track, ‘sub.conscious’, is a slo-mo, dream-powered cruise through the vortex. On the B-side,​ ‘8808808.08’ ramps it up a notch - glitchy, omnimous, body music permeates the airwaves. Finally, chuggy ‘Complex Clarity’ rounds out the EP with Garvey’s signature sound - deeply mesmerising with a hint of nostalgia.

Time for a dose of much welcome dance floor positivity from the eclectic mind of NYC native, now Berlin based DJ @gabriellekwarteng! Born in Brooklyn and raised in the Bronx, Gabrielle's unique musical appreciations stem from a early diet of Ghanaian highlife and Nigerian Afrobeat cassettes, alongside the American disco, funk and jazz her Ghanaian parents had on heavy rotation at home. 

These days, through a wonderfully curated monthly residency on Brooklyn's @thelotradio, Gabrielle's distinctive curiosities can be heard ranging from West African disco to Brazilian funk, Middle Eastern electro and house-inspired ‘90s tracks from places like India, Japan, South Africa and South Korea. 

Here Gabrielle takes us on a 'semi-post quarantine' journey full of dance music nostalgia for the soul, finding solace in uptempo rhythms to spread positive vibes to those in need!
