Podcast No.30 comes from our dear friend, Butter Side Up brain-box and Wire Booker and Promotions Manager, Hamish Cole. At his home town of Norwich he started putting on his first events at the age of 16, only this was dedicated to Hip Hop, a genre which is still a big influence for him. Years later came Butter Side Up, forged on a base of strong residents – Hugh Bailey, Jonny Sleight, Ciaran Hansen and of course Hamish himself. It has been an undeniable success. Four years of hard-work and unparalleled popularity has attracted the eye of legendary DJ’s from across the globe and has featured the likes of Theo Parrish, Gerd Janson, Floating Points and Jazzanova.

I, for one, have never met anyone who shares a love for music as much as Hamish does. So plug in and enjoy this eclectic mix that will ease you through your day.

Next up on our podcast series, we have Munich label-heads, Permanent Vacation, with a bucket-loads of unreleased material. Tom Bioly and Benjamin Frölich founded the label back in 2006 and it has grown from strength to strength with releases from highly acclaimed artists such as John Talabot, Mano Le Tough, Todd Terje, and Tevo Howard. The duo have also released on the label under the moniker Permanent Vacation and put on parties in Munich where they play alongside many highly respected artists.

Unfortunately, this one isn't available for download due to the unreleased material. Enjoy!

Flux Podcast - 33 - Permanent Vacation

Next up is a marathon mix from Irish producer and DJ, The Drifter. After an upbringing dabbling in different musical pursuits, from bands and choirs to folk and traditional, a love for electronic music was born from ventures into Dublin nightlife. A move to Berlin ensued soon after.

He excelled whilst DJing at his own night Passion Beat which he ran with Mano Le Tough for 3 years in Berlin. Together they built a strong residency and from this set up their own label, Maeve, along with another close friend, Baikal. They all share the same love for emotive deep music and this has been at the forefront of the label’s releases and led to ties with heavyweight labels such as Innervisions.

In late 2012 he released his first solo work, the ‘Lovers’ EP, on Permanent Vacation. His 'Again' EP on Maeve came out earlier this year along with two tracks on Permanent Vacation. Keep an eye out for him and his label; they sure are ones to watch in the long run.

A: I enjoy creating new mixes. The creative process while searching and selecting new songs is amazing. And it was an absolute pleasure to make one for 'My Favourite Freaks'. 
I selected my most favorite songs at the moment who simultaneously define my own sound. I already picked some other tracks for my next podcast on Get Physical radio show.

Q: What kind of style you played in your mix? Do you made something special? Or just a mix?

A: It was important for me to pick songs, who are reflecting my current taste and which I actually play in clubs. A powerful mix and ongoing groove like the new single from Tiefschwarz released on Watergate records or the bad Kingdom remix from Koze. I hope you will enjoy it!

Q: What is your next release and where do you release it?

A: My new single is called 'Hang Loose' and will be released on Kindisch Records. 'Hang loose' is a term from the surfing field, that describes a certain trick or move that surfers do. Since I was a surf teacher in south of France long time ago and still love to surf, the mentality and spirit influences every song. Ben Hoo and Rhythm Factory produced both a remix for me and Ben Hoo is the one you listen to in my mix. I love both of them and I am really thankful.

Since his first DJ appearance in 1997, Noema has worked with the likes of Apparat, Daniel Wang and Dixon. He has released on African Shakedown with his re-work of Ata Kak – Daa Nyinaa and a cover/dub-version of Iko Iko. His new label The Magic Movement, promises to bring all sorts of experimental disco-influenced tracks in the near future. 

The Renate faithful will know Noema for his energetic marathon sets where he predominantly blends disco and psychedelic house.

Next up we have Head Mistress of the Paradisco party series, resident record authority at Berlin’s famed OYE Records, and label boss of the heavenly, Love on the Rocks: Paramida.

Growing up on the banks of the Rhine and exploring the lesser known record bins in Frankfurt’s Metropolitan Area, Paramida wasn't like all the other girls in school. A fiery presence backed up with strong musical opinions was what ultimately led to Para hitchhiking her way to Berlin the day she graduated from high school. Her search for something new in the East didn't last very long when she landed a job in one of Berlin’s best record shops, OYE Records. After a few years of DJing and throwing parties around Berlin, she landed in Renate, and began her monthly event, Paradisco, with a core group of friends. 

Spending time playing alongside varied selectors, as well as working during the day at the record shop, has allowed Paramida to develop her own unique musical style that shows in her selection. 2014 saw Para launching her label “Love On The Rocks” which maintains a fragile balance between balearic sunsets, discotheque road trips, and sweaty house nights.

Keep an eye out for her, she's one to watch.

Pluie/Noir Podcast is a bi-monthly audio-visual episode representing our work as an artist collective. Each episode will feature a one hour collage/mix by one of our producers/djs and a poster triptych by one of our designers.
We interviewed both artists and dropped some questions about their vision:

:DR NOJOKE:

P/N- How's Dr.nojoke?
Nojoke- Fine. There is just a bit too much going on at the moment. I´d like to go on holidays :)

P/N- UNOIKI has grown immensely since 2010. What's happening lately on your beloved collective?
Nojoke- Well, this year we focussed on artists albums. We put out sul.a, Superlauncher and my album.
Our graphic designer Jonathan Mangelinckx (also in Pluie/Noir) created a collective packaging/artwork, that looks awesome. Check it on our site: http://unoiki.bandcamp.com
We have also two new projects in the cue and one is about portraits of houses.
Then I am planning a 3 years showcase! And today on Wednesday, 15th, UNOIKI starts his monthly webcast on Studio R. I will play there for 90 minutes presenting my new album UNEXPRESSED. Tune in if you like. It starts at 9pm GMT/UTC+2

P/N-  You are a highly world-aware and pro-active artist. Politics, nature, human rights, war.. all seem to have a weight on your creativity. Does Berlin and it's political past get to you in some way?
Nojoke- Sure it has all weight! I can´t understand when people ignore all that.
It is really up to ourselves how we live, and we have to deal with the consequences.
I don´t want to waste my precious life with nasty things.
Music is important, love, freedom, peace and nature. Politics and economics are important to me because they rule over me. Also democracy is a treasure and we have to be critical and feel responsible.
It´s an endless fight in a way. I don´t want to fight, but all the time we are forced to fight against or for something or somebody.
Ah, it tears me apart sometimes.

P/N-  Meint Ihr Nicht? What does it mean, where did you get your inspiration from and how did you record it?
Nojoke- It means: "Don´t you think ...". It is taken from the Prolog of Haus der Lüge, an album from Einstürzende Neubauten, one of the most interesting and most influential german bands.
Inspiration is maybe point 3. I recorded a vinyl-only set presenting you some music I am deeply in love with - all made up as kind of a collage recorded on a system of a friend in my house.
It is not easy to listen to, but I think it´s an adventurous trip with great music from Brian Eno, Andrew Peckler, Demdike Stare,, Burnt Friedman, Akufen, Taylor Dupree, Tolouse Low Trax, Songs of Suspect, Radian, Mate galic & Rob Acid, Non Standard Institut and Pan American.

P/N- Future agenda?
Nojoke- Will play some concerts in August, go to Paris (at le batofar), and to Lisboa in November for a FUNGO night, Pluie/Noir partners.
New EPs on Eminor binary, Coal Records, Redukt and Concrete Records in August / September. Stuff upcoming also on Klangscheiben, Archipel and Pluie/Noir :)
Some remixes also for Letitia Lemach and Roebin de Freitas (out a few weeks ago)
working with J-Lab on an TRIoon album also. Want to start working on an artist album, that is dance-oriented. And finally I am producing a music for a shortfilm from Stefano Batelli at the moment

P/N- How are you feeling lately?
Sonja- Overwhelmed 

P/N-  Your life used to be divided between music and design. What are you doing nowadays? 
Sonja- I am mostly playing now. Summer always brought me good gigs. I am lucky. I am very tired of graphic design as a job. 

P/N-  How was the experience of making a visual interpretation of an audio podcast with such experimental tones as Nojoke's submission? What can you tell us about your triptych? 
Sonja- I told Dr. Nojoke that his podcast is very disturbing. Not a peaceful or easy experience to your senses. 
I guess my triptych makes it double, although it smooths the whole experience.
The inspiration is very late 80's videotape graphics. Artificial scratches and layers of every kind. Rainbow goes napalm. 

P/N- FUNGO is one of the most interesting collective platforms in Portugal. How's your affair with the project?
Sonja- I am in an relationship with FUNGO. Forever and ever. 
I think Fungo is developing into something that you recognize as quite solid, with high standards and very professional. 
And honestly with the nicest people to be around. They are my biggest supporters but they also kick my butt when I become lazy. That´s priceless. 

P/N- What's next for 2012?
Sonja- I do not know. I am a bit concerned with the future.. In overall. But musically, I would love to start producing. And improve everyday. Personally and professionally.

Starting the No Hype project in 2011 he has started to gather an impressive number of productions with a few releases already scheduled for the coming year including the Next Te Iubesc V/A. For the next instalment in our podcast series, he delivers a carefully structured mix through dreamy landscapes and rhythmic sonorities that have become characteristic of his sound.
