Our next contributor, Eli Verveine (@eli-verveine), has been DJing for over 20 years, first establishing herself at local Zurich venues like Dachkantine and later on international stages.

Verveine’s DJing is patient, and it rewards that same patience in the listener. In this Q&A we dive into this concept and how it applies more generally to learning the art of DJing over time. Anecdotes from parties over the years – including an earlier epic set at Renate – help illustrate how Verveine has navigated the dilemmas of expressing creativity from the DJ booth.

The accompanying mix is a live recording of a recent gig in Gothenburg, and after a measured opening you can soon hear the crowd roar their appreciation during the breaks in Lil Louis’s ‘Blackout’ – patience, as ever, bringing its just rewards.

Next up on our podcast series, we have Munich label-heads, Permanent Vacation, with a bucket-loads of unreleased material. Tom Bioly and Benjamin Frölich founded the label back in 2006 and it has grown from strength to strength with releases from highly acclaimed artists such as John Talabot, Mano Le Tough, Todd Terje, and Tevo Howard. The duo have also released on the label under the moniker Permanent Vacation and put on parties in Munich where they play alongside many highly respected artists.

Next up is Noema, resident DJ at the highly acclaimed Berlin club, Wilde Renate. 

Since his first DJ appearance in 1997, Noema has worked with the likes of Apparat, Daniel Wang and Dixon. He has released on African Shakedown with his re-work of Ata Kak – Daa Nyinaa and a cover/dub-version of Iko Iko. His new label The Magic Movement, promises to bring all sorts of experimental disco-influenced tracks in the near future. 

The Renate faithful will know Noema for his energetic marathon sets where he predominantly blends disco and psychedelic house.

This particular mix is very close to my heart for a number of reasons. The primary one is of course, Gabriel. The occasion, being the night of my birthday and the bringing together of two generations at the forefront of my world. Choosing Gabriel to open for Craig Richards.

As you know I have a deep rooted belief in “we need to know where we are coming from to know where we are going”. New and old generations intertwining.

Gabriel is a very unique young talent. He manages to have attritibutes that I only see in matured artists after all these years. Expansive musical knowledge, having the suitability and adaptability to the context at play; be it jazz, electronic or funk. One can feel that in the progression. Introduction, middle, end…

Story telling.

In addition to the artistic competence you have an incredible personality, one that has ambition but also remains humble, never confusing it with self-entitlement, rather …. mutual respect, appreciation and gratitude. Evident to that, he has his own party called Local Moves, born at The lion and Lamb, supporting local artists, enhancing exchange and contributing to the scene he is a part of.

The venue he holds that party residency in now Little Portland Street, also where this set was recorded. LPS is an audiophile space in Central London with a Martion Installation. This venue is very dear to my heart because I programme the Thursday nights there since it opened for nearly 3 years now.

Next up we have Head Mistress of the Paradisco party series, resident record authority at Berlin’s famed OYE Records, and label boss of the heavenly, Love on the Rocks: Paramida.

Growing up on the banks of the Rhine and exploring the lesser known record bins in Frankfurt’s Metropolitan Area, Paramida wasn't like all the other girls in school. A fiery presence backed up with strong musical opinions was what ultimately led to Para hitchhiking her way to Berlin the day she graduated from high school. Her search for something new in the East didn't last very long when she landed a job in one of Berlin’s best record shops, OYE Records. After a few years of DJing and throwing parties around Berlin, she landed in Renate, and began her monthly event, Paradisco, with a core group of friends. 

Spending time playing alongside varied selectors, as well as working during the day at the record shop, has allowed Paramida to develop her own unique musical style that shows in her selection. 2014 saw Para launching her label “Love On The Rocks” which maintains a fragile balance between balearic sunsets, discotheque road trips, and sweaty house nights.

Keep an eye out for her, she's one to watch.

Darlings, this is my first home recorded podcast since the mix for Fuse, quite a few years back. The Loser Records Berlin posse pushed me to record one and I happily surrendered. I played for them at the Wilde Renate at the end of February. It was one of the last gigs before, well, things unfolded.
The atmosphere at the packed club was outstanding and the boys and girls from Loser were lovely company, I felt very well cared for.

I am very happy with the mix. I hope you enjoy it as I do.
