Neon paced the small, dimly lit room, her mind racing as she considered her options. The walls felt like they were closing in, each second ticking away, bringing her closer to the moment when the authorities would come crashing through the door. The Coranthium she had smuggled was stashed securely in a hidden compartment beneath the floorboards, but that wouldn't save her if she stayed. The metal was too valuable, too dangerous—if they found her with it, she wouldn't just be imprisoned. She'd be made an example of.

Her gaze flicked to the small, worn-out communicator on the table. It was her only link to the Vantoth, the shadowy network of smugglers that operated across the galaxy. They were notorious for their ruthlessness, but also for their efficiency. If anyone could get her off Mastika, it was them. But trusting them was a gamble, one that could cost her more than just her freedom.

She had dealt with them before, sure. A few trades, a few whispered conversations in the dark corners of Mastika's underbelly. But this was different. She wasn’t just looking to trade goods or make a quick profit—she needed an escape, a way out of a life that had become too dangerous to live. And once she was out there, beyond the reach of Mastika's authorities, she'd be at the mercy of the Vantoth.

Neon sighed, running a hand through her cropped, silver hair. She was no stranger to danger, but this was a new level. The cosmos was unforgiving, and the Vantoth even more so. If they turned on her, she'd be lost—another ghost floating in the vast emptiness of space.

But what choice did she have? Staying would mean certain capture, and she wasn't ready to give up her freedom just yet. Taking to the stars, though... that was a risk she might be willing to take. If she could get in touch with the right people, maybe—just maybe—she could find a way out of this mess.

With a determined look, she picked up the communicator and activated it. The screen flickered to life, casting an eerie blue glow on her face. She hesitated for a moment, her finger hovering over the contact list, before finally selecting the one name that could change her fate: Thorne, a high-ranking member of the Vantoth who she had dealt with before.

The screen pulsed as the connection was made, a series of encrypted codes flashing before Thorne’s image appeared. His face was half-hidden in shadow, only one of his dark, calculating eyes visible.

“Neon,” Thorne’s voice was smooth, almost too calm. “To what do I owe this... unexpected pleasure?”

“I need a way off Mastika,” Neon said, cutting to the chase. “And I need it fast.”

Thorne was silent for a moment, studying her with that one visible eye. “Off Mastika? That’s not an easy request, even for someone with your reputation. What’s the urgency?”

“The authorities are closing in,” she admitted. “And I’ve got something they want.”

“Coranthium,” Thorne guessed, a hint of a smile curling his lips. “You’ve always had a talent for getting yourself into trouble, Neon.”

“Can you help me or not?” Neon asked, her patience thinning.

Thorne leaned back, considering her request. “Perhaps. But it won’t be cheap. And you’ll need to do exactly as I say. The Vantoth don’t take kindly to loose ends.”

Neon felt a chill run down her spine. This was it—the point of no return. “I’ll do what I have to. Just get me off this planet.”

Thorne nodded slowly. “Alright. Meet me at Dock 47 in two hours. And Neon... don’t be late. The Vantoth aren’t known for their patience.”

The connection ended abruptly, leaving Neon staring at the blank screen. She had two hours to gather what little she could and make her way to the docks. Two hours to say goodbye to the life she knew and prepare for the unknown.

But as she grabbed her gear and headed for the door, a thought nagged at the back of her mind. Could she really trust Thorne? Or was she simply walking into another trap, one that could end with her floating lifelessly through space?
