Taking control of the fabric podcast for our 21st episode is an addictive contribution from Germany-based beat curator and master of genre-hybridity, DJ SPIT.

Highly diverse and at the very height of contemporary electronic music, this recording traverses a landscape very rarely explored by other DJs. Industrial, funky, rap-fuelled bass sounds and hard kick-drums - this one has got it all. 

DJ SPIT joins a packed line-up on Saturday 9th September to celebrate the release of Saoirse’s hotly-tipped ’fabric presents’ mix and compilation. Saoirse herself has invited down DJ Spit for the celebratory event, along with further guests like Surgeon, JASSS, DJ Stingray 313, and heaps more.

This is the recording of my closing set at FOLD, London, on April 14th, 2023. I'd put together the lineup for Transmissions and DJed after Shackleton, CCL and mi-el, and had a really special time playing in a zone I’ve been hugely enjoying this year – fast, headsy, frenetic, tunnelling, kind of psychedelic (but not like explicitly psy), twisting and turning in different directions, all over the place genre-wise but tightly bound in a specific mood and propulsive energy.

Decided to re-record a few transitions on this one and tidy it up a little – it’s more editing than I’d usually do but I wanted to release the best mix I could which would exemplify where my head's been at this year. :)

@surusinghe is one of many exciting Naarm/Melbourne artists to have broken through in the last couple of years. She has been working behind the scenes in the industry for a decade but only started to release her own music in 2022. Now based in London where she has co-founded the Phenomena label, she has an international mix of influences that make her club-ready sounds utterly thrilling. They all draw on the fact that she is a clubber first and foremost, and one proud of her Sri Lankan heritage. 

She goes big over the course of an hour for us this week and threads together plenty of body-popping rhythms from dembow to techno to wobbly London dubstep. She drops in several of her own tunes, one of which is unreleased, as are two others from Doctor Jeep and Tom Kami. It's a fresh and futuristic workout of high-octane sound from an adventurous DJ who always brings the party in fresh new ways.

3024: Jasmín, can you describe your mix in a single sentence ?

Playing in the middle of a very fun night made me pick my boldest tracks in the playlist I had prepared, including a bunch of UK classics. 

3024: What DJ inspires you at the moment / has inspired you throughout the years and why?

So many of them, but Batu is always a favourite of mine. He plays eclectic, but it always comes together as a whole. I saw him close De School in December on a Timedance night I had opened, and I just had to stay until the end (somewhat past 8:00), because I was really dancing, but he also kept me so curious about what he was going to play next. It’s a true skill to be able to surprise people without it feeling too random, and keep up a groove for the whole set at the same time. 

3024: What are you working on / what have you got forthcoming?

Right now I’m just trying to make a lot of different tracks to eventually have a good amount of music to choose from for a full EP. Not sure yet what’s going to come out of that. So nothing forthcoming yet. Between DJing, some freelance work, and life (lol), it’s not always easy to find a full day where I can sit down and completely focus on making music. I’m hoping 2024 is the year of the great workflow for me!

the latest VA from the label W133 ! it's got a track of mine on the A side - the track is called "mahsa amini". the record is super special to me because it the first vinyl pressing with my music on it. and on the flip side there's a super bouncy track that i played in the mix, it's called "jacarandas" by sam who & pino peña, w133's boss dude. tip!
