Almost 20 years on since the majority of these tracks saw the light of day, this mix encompasses just a few of my personal favourite drum&bass records that were released during 1995 – 1997. 

As the title suggests, this mix ebbs and flows throughout both sides of the genre, all compiled and mixed using the original vinyl purchased from back in the day.

Duality Mix #01

Recorded over their two day residency, 9.9.16 picks the best of the weekend and compresses it into a heavy slab of DIY-trance-progge-reared-on-minimalism. Their seemingly endless, ritualistic riffs follow their own rhythm and their own harmony to the roots of some far-away gnarled tree. Includes 'Stina' - a lilting folk-rock track written by close friend Mats G Bengtsson.

Clip from the latest Subtext Recordings release by Ellen Arkbro - For organ and brass. For organ and brass is comprised of two works by the Stockholm-based composer Ellen Arkbro. Both works focus on tuning, intonation and harmonic modulation. In previous projects, Arkbro composed for early music ensembles, wrote a series of durational pieces utilising synthetic tones and processed guitars, and, most recently, presented a work lasting 26 days at the Stockholm Concert Hall. for organ and brass looks back to Arkbro’s studies in Just Intonation with La Monte Young, Marian Zazeela, and their disciple Jung Hee Choi in New York, as well as with kindred spirit Marc Sabat in Berlin.

The title composition was written for an organ with a specific kind of historical tuning known as meantone temperament. It was only after locating an appropriate instrument—-the Sherer-Orgel dating back to 1624 in St. Stephen’s Church in Tangermünde, Northeastern Germany—-that Arkbro set about recording both for organ and brass and its counterpart, three. “Hidden within the harmonic framework of the Renaissance organ are intervals and chords that bare a close resemblance to those found in the modalities of traditional blues music,” explains Arkbro. “The work can be thought of as a very slow and reduced blues music.” 

The work moves gradually through a series of long, sustained tones played by the organ and in parallel by a brass trio comprised of horn, tuba, and trombone. Arkbro’s treatment of pitch resembles the tuning strategies of La Monte Young. The brass parts were performed by microtonal brass trio Zinc & Copper, a group whose repertoire has included works by C.C. Hennix and Christian Wolff.  http://www.zincandcopper.org/

In Arkbro’s words, “the brass instruments and the organ fall into patterns of interaction in which a new breathing instrument emerges.” three, which follows the 20-minute title work, deploys the same principles of harmonic relativity. In removing the organ from the instrumentation and switching to a different meter, three acts as an intimate counterpoint to the ritual drone cycles of the title piece.  

Ellen Arkbro is currently studying for her Master’s degree in music composition at the Royal College of Music in Stockholm. Her work has been performed in Brooklyn, Stockholm, Norberg, Bologna, Gothenburg, Berlin, Birmingham, and Malmö, and on Swedish National Radio.

The performers were Johan Graden (organ), Elena Kakaliagou (horn), Hilary Jeffery 
(trombone), and Robin Hayward (tuba).

"The first time we collaborated as a duo was for our interpretation of The Sinking of the Titanic by Gavin Bryars at les Ateliers Claus. At that time, there was an audience surrounding us. Now secluded and on our own, we went back to the same venue and locked ourself for 2 days arranging and recording the music Ben Bertrand wrote while he was in confinement.

We designed a dense and mineral triptych. Digging into this music, we experienced the current and pressure of the passing time. At some point we saw light coming in. The transformation has already been done, reversion to fundamentals is now our single option." - Ben Bertrand & Otto Lindholm

Ben Bertrand
Ben Bertrand is a Belgian Bass Clarinetist and composer. With his instrument and countless machines, Ben creates his live with a hypnotic web of sounds. Listening to his music is like sitting at the sea, watching a slow motion of our crazy life sailing by. With his former works (Era/Area, Off-Record 2017 and NGC 1999, les albums Claus 2018), Ben toured in Belgium, France and Netherlands (Meakusma Festival, Ancienne Belgique, Le Lieu Unique, Schiev Festival, Le Guess Who?, World Minimal Music Festival). His last album, Manes, has been released in March 2020 in collaboration with Stroom and les albums claus.

Otto Lindholm
Brussels-based composer evolving in drone music and modern classical, Otto Lindholm employs an array of loop pedals and electronic effects in partnership with his double bass to produce a range of rich and voluptuous tones, emotions, and elongated melodies. He released music on Icarus Records, Gizeh Records, Houndstooth, Blackest Ever Black, Aurora Borealis Recordings, Bedouin Records.

Neither working for the NHS, caring for others, being a shop worker, ensuring safe transport nor providing an essential public service; yet remaining at work during this pandemic has filled me with worry, guilt, anxiety and some stability. TR063 - Left Hand Cuts off the Right - 'Awareness Of Failure'

"At 4AM I slip out of the house to cycle east, towards dawn, with cello on my back and a stool strapped to the rack. The word 'essential' is turning over and around in my head. I am taking the quietest roads, trying to stay invisible, worried that someone might stop me and interfere with our plans. I find Daniel with recording equipment and hand sanitizer and together we walk another distance through dawn and smell of rain. We enter the Marshes, these essential lungs of East London. It is where he had come almost every day of these locked-down weeks to field-record and breathe. And it is where Evie and I met for walks and secret music - carefully bending the laws of the officially ‘essential’. I am wondering about places and times when public music was forbidden and never driven to extinction. This time it is for pandemic reasons and the severity of consequences is unspeakable and has turned into much noise in my head. But the birds, the wind, and the rain offer such relief and I feel so shy in their presence that my music can only become the smallest of offerings to them in the rainless window between 4.48AM and 5.15AM.

Oaken Palace Records proudly presents I Can Wait, a new full-length album by Left Hand Cuts  off the Right (aka Robbie Judkins), a sombre but comforting, beautifully drifting set of four  pieces for zither, melodica, synth and mbira. The quartet of tracks was recorded in 2018 but  appears now as a timely sonic missive that absorbs a sense of individual uncertainties amid a  collapsing wider world, but provides a response that reaches out to create a haven of calm,  reflective resonance. 

Robbie says of the recordings, “During bouts of depression I have found playing simple,  repetitive and attentive melodies to help - it allows me to focus on listening and playing in a  reciprocal way. This has often evolved into me developing and adapting these pieces to become  listening experiences at times when my mind needs to be somewhere else.” 

The album unfolds serenely over thirty-five minutes, constructed of faint chiming, delicate  drones and soft crackles. Patient and meditative, it gives the impression of computers in an  office talking to each other quietly at night-time, or road-sweepers and rubbish lorries  murmuring in their sleep, the peaceful breathing of a tired city.

Left Hand Cuts Off The Right dedicates OAK-019, I Can Wait, to the Pied Tamarin(Sanguinus bicolor), a critically endangered monkey whose home in a small area of the Brazilian Amazon is severely threatened by deforestation and habitat destruction. All proceeds from tape sales will be donated to its conservation and protection. 

Oaken Palace Records is a registered UK charity (#1154786), raising  
money for environmental causes through releasing drone records  
dedicated to endangered species. Since 2012 the label has donated more  
than £15,000 to conservation organisations around the world.

Premiere: Blessed are the Hearts that Bend - Kaal [Vaknar]

Dragon’s Eye is pleased to announce the release of 'Mixed Signals,' a new collaboration between longtime electronic musician FAX (Rubén Alonso Tamayo) and guitarist Braulio Lam. Both hailing from Mexico, the duo have crafted a multifaceted, shimmering ambient record that calmly propels the listener through passages echoing with just the right amount of reverb. Muted beats thrum against waves of ambient wash; bubbling guitar rides along the crest of synthetic sweeps. These carefully balanced mixed messages align with the album’s title, though the effect is not one of confusion. Listening creates a feeling of motivation toward a sense of ease, or settling into flux.

Fax & Braulio Lam - Insomnia

Raft of Trash is a generative music project exploring the sounds of systems using the natural rhythms of environmental dialogue in the world-building game SimCity 3000. It is a collaboration between sound artists/musicians Andrew PM Hunt (aka Dialect) and JC Leisure, and designer Thom Isom.  

Like the group’s early EPs, their debut album Likeness on the Edge of Town showcases the breadth of possibilities emerging from their unique process. Whilst playing SimCity 3000, the in-built sound effects of the game are converted and repurposed into MIDI data which is then fed to Hunt and Leisure's synths and samplers in real time. The resulting soundscape, imprinted with the dynamics of a simulated environment, is then augmented with live guitar, spoken word and field recordings to create an uncanny collage of wild synthesis, experimental narrative and bending, viscous guitar.  

Inspired by Fluxus artist Alison Knowles, the spoken word passages sprinkled across the record act as part travel journal, part system theory field guide as “someone guiding you through the simulated desert landscape, and through some kind of inner journey”. Exploring for instance the connections between the irregularities we discover in our functioning bodies and the impact of environmental influences or describing the fullness of the reality of stopping at a truck stop, these passages are an illuminating exploration of the complexity of living systems and real-life situations. Subtle musical references to Americana and sounds sourced from the desert around Joshua Tree contribute to a journey-like mood throughout the record. 

Musically, the record remains in largely abstract territory. Synths sprawl, crawl and fly above a sonic bed of creaks, ripples and bleeps; nothing is at it seems. This ambiguous relationship between the organic and the synthetic further highlights the themes explored by the group.

Raft of Trash - Sans Sherif at the Painted Oasis

This song, which was originally supposed to be featured on a compilation, was ultimately scrapped for being too "dark". The bulk of this track was recorded in April of 2020 and then altered, possessed, exorcised, and eventually mastered by Sam Regan in October of 2020.

Left Hand Cuts off the Right (Robbie Judkins) is an outlet for exploratory methods and composition. During live performances he plays with bent electronics, acoustic instrumentation, hand percussion, field recordings, loops and effects. The sounds are of otherworldliness, twinkling twitchings, habitual drones, crackling rhythms and oddities directing you, transfixed, through the wonderment.
