Acid Soul 11

This is probably my favourite of the Acid Soul series so far. Featuring a selection of deep, dirty groovers from recent months, with a smattering of classics for good measure too. Thanks must go out to the fine folks of the DJ History forum for prompting me to dig out Maurice Fulton's mix of Alice Smith - forgot just how good that record is.

Midnight City Podcast #012 is created by Funkyjaws! (TRACKLIST BELOW !)
We feel this set is a perfect representation of that deephouse sound which is taking over eastern Europe as we speak. Warm deep sounds with dashing hats full of warm bases and pretty rhodes, add to that a couple of amazing timeless disco tracks/samples and you’ve got the vibe we’re going for. Funkyjaws resides from Belarus and got picked up quickly because of his briljant two releases on Kolour LTD which he produced alongside Four Walls. His latest work just came out on Thatmanmonkz’s Shadeleaf and more is to be found on Petr Serkin’s Freedom Sessions. One of our favourite edits is actually produced by Funkyjaws and is called Star Struck which you can find on Glen View. But before we go any further and come across all starstruck, let’s take it easy and listen to this beautiful podcast, which even contains some unreleased material by the man himself.

This mixtape by San Francisco based Beat Broker is a follow up to his recent “Beach Boogie” mix for Dream Chimney with even more sun drenched dub disco boom.
The Beat Broker has as been DJing and producing for 15+ years, originally as part of the minimal techno duo Broker/Dealer and later solo focusing on disco, italo, balearic and house. He releases music and extended dub remixes on labels such as Bear Funk, Flexx, Catune, Ghost Town and SENTRALL all while working full time curating and coding for Dream Chimney.

@Dave-Allison aka Ed Wizard & Disco Double Dee has been releasing a staggering amount of edits for the better part of a decade now. Originally coming from a funkier and more upbeat house background, he transitioned into his current slo-mo disco niche after starting to craft edits for a monthly residency at Salon Daomé in his hometown of Montréal. Allison's second label, @Editorial-Records was the natural byproduct of this exploration into more down and mid-tempo territory and the imprint has now released edits and reworks from many like-minded producers. Next up on the label is a 9 track LP from the man himself, appropriately entitled "Slo-Mo Disco".

Crafting an edit isn't necessarily rocket science, but some are just better at it than others. Dave Allison is one of the better known craftsman and is a bit of a wizard when it comes down to it, making him befitting of the moniker he goes by. One of the most important aspects to an edit is of course song selection and in this case Allison has picked a doozy.

Our premiere today and the final cut on the forthcoming LP is titled 'Keep On Lovin You'. Taking an already phenomenal (and highly sought after) record by Gloria Ann Taylor that sounds modern enough to have been produced within the last decade, Ed Wizard & Disco Double Dee gives it a slight re-arrange with the primary focus of the edit being the melodic elements. From the alluring strings to the hypnotizing guitar riffs, nothing from the original has really been left out except an extended portion of Gloria's vocals, but in this case the instrumentation is so good that we can live without them.

Fresh from brilliant releases by De Gama and Les Inferno, Samosa Records is back, this time with LTJ Xperience taking over with the sounds. The label’s latest release sees Luca Trevisi - a veteran Italian producer - summon up the quite exceptional sounds of ‘Bringing Me Over’. Such is the stature of the release that this vinyl-affair features just the one track - but what a track it is!!!
A gloriously warm disco-tinged gem, ‘Bringing Me Over’ bares all the hallmarks of a Samosa record. Alongside some clever samples and an alluring male vocal, its gorgeous percussion and sweaty hues mark it out as a track that already has us yearning for summer. A classy anthem that’s sure to prove a hit with discerning tastemakers over the next while. Another absolute winner from the Samosa crew, it’s proof once again that the Italian label is fast becoming one of the best and most consistent modern-day disco labels.

If 2017 was the year that Samosa first burst on to the scene, 2018 looks set to be the year where they solidify their reputation amongst the house and disco elite.

Acid Soul 8

Over the last couple of years a number of producers have emerged that have captured the spirit of that original Chicago House sound from back in the day; a time when house music wore it's disco influences firmly on it's sleeve. Producers such as Neville Watson, Kink, Hard Ton, Snuff Crew &amp; Shiny Objekts (to name a few) manage to create music that's deep and raw yet still oozes funk and soul.

The 'Acid Soul' series of mixes celebrate this sound and this latest instalment features a bunch of stuff I've been playing in my peak time sets in recent months (including the Carnival after party a few weeks back). It wouldn't be a Leftside Wobble set though without a smattering of edits too, and this features some killer versions of Marvin Gaye and Steve Winwood classics as well as my own recent spin on 'Could Heaven Ever Be Like This'.
