It's been four years since Tim Exile's last release, but the analog warrior never stopped his ferociously futuristic experimentation, whether collaborating with evolutionary biologist Richard Dawkins, improvising presentations at TED Global 2013, or performing as Mostly Robot with Jamie Lidell. Tim has become more relaxed about music these days following releases on Warp and Planet Mu, diving deep into refined techno without sacrificing fun. Exile's new EP on Leisure System gathers stunning improvised instrumental club bangers from the churning assembly line of his mind, three prickly synth adventures with all the glorious bombast expected from dueling intergalactic battleships. Gudrun Gut and Mabe Fratti have worked together on a powerful hybrid album, where taut rhythms fuse with haunted vocal melodies and spoken word, and field recordings meld with extended ambient pieces. Limited edition of 500 copies on Yellow Transparent vinyl LP, digital downloads and streamings.

As part of Umor Rex’s 15th anniversary, we here present an album that builds a dialogue between two lands and two unique artists. Mexico is the origin and conceptual residence of our label, while Germany is where we produce and manufacture our records (Berlin functions as the center of distribution and logistics, thanks to our friends at Morr Music). The intertwining imaginations belong to German producer Gudrun Gut (Malaria!) —a notable figure of the subculture and the German music scene since the early 80s, and also a founder of Monika Enterprise and recipient of the ‘Listen to Berlin’ Award in 2019— and singer, multi-instrumentalist and composer Mabe Fratti (originally from Guatemala, now based in Mexico City). We knew about “Let’s Talk About The Weather” from the beginning, and since the moment Gudrun and Mabe made us part of their project, our excitement could not be greater.

The process started with Gudrun and Mabe having long distance conversations, asking about their whereabouts and discussing the weather. This might seem rather commonplace, but it works as a key thematic component for the entire album. The weather as the new great unknown, perceived through the optics of everyday life. Sound files were methodically exchanged, with Mabe exploring words and vocals, and Gudrun working with field recordings taken from each city. In the end, this joint musical venture would provide a healing effect for both artists during life in quarantine.

“Aufregend”, the opening track of the album, reflects upon a general lack of excitement in modern life. It wonders what the future might hold. Is it cold? Is it warm? Will it be the same? “Air Condition” is an eerie, dazzling collision of climates: the hazy warmth of Mexico City, the deep cold of Uckermark. The last track, which gives the album its name, is a long ambient piece composed of four parts: sound sculptures, field recordings of city life, news and weather forecasts, and private conversations about the climate. It’s kind of a collaborative diary, obsessed with a single, all-encompassing subject.

"Bird Matrix" was made just after Actress finished writing his most recent album Ghettoville. “My studio was going through a transition, so I was testing all the equipment, and that was one of the first tunes that came out of those experiments,” he explains. It’s a fittingly exploratory tune for a mix that balances traditional functionality with dance music’s cutting edge.

“Digital Sunset” is a nostalgic dive into the neon haze of the late ‘90s — where VHS dreams flicker on static screens, and analog synths hum with the warmth of forgotten memories. Each track paints a scene — from the hum of an electric boulevard at midnight to the soft glow of CRT reflections on sleepless nights. It’s music for night drives, for rainy windows, for remembering what never was.

Neon Skyline

Following two radical reinterpretations earlier this summer from Truncate and Yaleesa Hall, which earned plays from Roman Flügel, Laurent Garnier and Ben Sims to Dusky and Huxley; Kamera’s ‘Ventoux’ EP is further expanded with two remixes that tastefully expand the producer’s original vision of uncompromising body music.

Throwing Snow’s remix of title track ‘Ventoux’ deconstructs the bright, IDM inspired anthem into something equally frenetic yet utterly different. Punchy live drums begin to escalate over a deeply satisfying electronic snarl, recalling Throwing Snow’s noted fascination with post-rock, while maintaining the tempo with naturally evolving elements of industrial and EBM.

Meanwhile, festival and club favourite George FitzGerald, delivers a blistering remix of Consignia, one of his personal favourite club records in recent times. Here, FitzGerald continues his masterful streak of production, knowingly blending the somewhat menacing machine throb of the original with a suspenseful bassline, eventually culminating in a heavenly, ethereal breakdown, one that’s certain to leave bigger rooms in throes.
