This is part of a series of covers I am making of the music from "The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening."  This is the music that plays when the mysterious owl in the game is delivering a message to Link.  As the song is so short (just two measures!), I decided to divide the song into nine different covers, one for each dungeon in the game.  Each version highlights the instrument that the player will find in the next dungeon.  This version would play between the game's opening and Tail Cavern, and as thus it highlights the Moonlit Cello.

The Owl (cover) (Cello Version)

This is a cover I wrote a few months ago of the music in The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening that plays in Animal Village, one of only two settlements on Koholint Island.  When I was a kid, this was one of my favorite songs from the game, but once I got older I realized that it was actually a pretty bad song (or at least incredibly repetitive).  I wasn't quite sure how to do a cover of it, until I stopped picturing happy ol' Animal Village and started picturing Link taking Marin through Animal Village on his first (maybe second? hard to remember) visit to the village.  I'll never forget the feeling you get when you first visit Animal Village; the feeling of surreality at seeing a whole village populated by bunnies and bears and hippos, quite unlike the human-populated Mabe Village.  I also won't forget how absolutely chilling seeing Animal Village at the end of the game is, and I wanted to capture both of those feelings in this cover.  I think my endeavor was worthwhile, because this is probably my favorite cover in the entire project.  This is Animal Village as I would like to envision it: a quirky, happy place that is literally too wonderful to be true, and the ominous knowledge by that point in the game as you carry Marin through town that something isn't quite right.

Man...I love Link's Awakening.

Update 5/2/2014 - Maximized the sound

When I first played the game, each time the music for the owl played, I always expected the two arpeggios were an intro leading up to the real song, which never was the case. This is my imagining of that song. I chopped up phrases from the Wind Fish song and scattered them around. As the game takes place within the Wind Fish's dream, I interpret the owl as a subconscious of the Wind Fish guiding Link to wake it up.

Leitbur (“light-brr”) is an on-going electronic music project by Jaron Widman and Samantha Krzyston.

Leitbur has its origins in Los Angeles, where Widman had been experimenting with sound and songwriting while studying film production at USC’s School of Cinematic Arts. After seeing the similarities between both disciplines, Widman began constructing his songs like his short films — each filled with autobiographical scenes, characters, and the occasional flashback or dream sequence. Widman uses the mood and tone of the 1980’s like a cinematographer, framing each song with care, to tell stories that are in equal parts nostalgic, sweet, and filled with pathos.

Later, Widman began colloborating with Chicago-to-L.A. transplant Krzyston, an aspiring psychotherapist and vocalist. Their romantic relationship caused Leitbur to become a film with two main characters. Soliliquies became conversations, and many of the warmest — and most painful— moments of their relationship were turned into their own scenes. Two EPs were made, Think of Tomorrow in 2012 and The Moment That I Knew You in 2015, before the release of a full-length album, Antique Travelers, in May 2016.
