Matt Berry was always convinced that, should he be lucky enough to avoid getting a ‘normal’ job, he would be a musician. His life would follow a certain path which, whilst not obviously attractive to most, would have seen him be ‘in a number of bands that would get dropped by the record company.’. So far it hasn’t quite turned out like that at all. 

‘Witchazel’ announced Berry as a writer of some distinction, MOJO praising an album ‘coming from a place of real eccentricity and imagination’, The Guardian finding the whole thing ‘genuinely impressive’,The Times declaring Matt a ‘multi-instrumental pysch-folk genius’  and Q summing it up neatly for the newcomers as ‘the sound of the Fleet Foxes had they grown up within earshot of the M25’.

New album Year of the Black Water Rabbit arrives 05/05/23

Lyla Foy is a British artist who performs intimate, melodic pop music. Beginning with scratchy kitchen recordings, her first EP, Shoestring (released under alias WALL), came out in 2013 and sprung Lyla into the underground mainstream. 

 
Hot off the heals of Shoestring, after reverting back to her name, the first full length album, Mirrors the Sky (Sub Pop) arrived in March 2014. The sound was a continuation from her WALL material. Still unpolished but with a sureness and a resolve to stand firmly in her genre. Lyla toured the world supporting this release, sharing stages with bands including The National, Sharon Van Etten, Midlake and Fleet Foxes. It was mentally exhausting, and while the process and industry caused a lot of grief, it lead to some of her most beautiful work - UMi, a long EP which was released in October 2015. Not wanting to print more than a limited edition run to test the water - all physical copies sold out on the first day.

Retreating once more to form a new band, consisting mainly of women, to help realise a new vocal-heavy sound, Lyla emerged again, having finished an album written with then partner, Oli Deakin (Lowpines) and produced by Patrick Wimberly (Chairlift). This was Bigger Brighter (ingrooves) which arrived in September 2018.  A charmingly messy collage of colour, emotions, places and people. It purposefully represented transition and although tongue-in-cheek,  you could sense the seas were unsettled.

In March 2020, as world was shutting down, Lyla was putting the finishing touches on her third full length album in Bristol with Ali Chant and long-time band members and virtual family Andy Goodall and Hazel Tratt. Having been determined not to add anymore people to the process, almost everything (bar drums and backing vocals) was performed by herself. While satisfying, it was insular, much like 2020 in its entirety. The months that followed did so in a daze. A new studio was created in a converted shepherds hut and a new home was made, out of the city. Videos were dreamed up and artwork emerged organically, with the help of her muse John H. Lyla finally had enough time to see things clearly without all the noise that normally created havoc in her mind. This album would be released without pretence, without mass promotion and every attention would be focused on the details of the release and the way it would make people feel when they heard it.

Once the world’s lone superpower, America has been in a state of flux for several years. The economy seems to weaken every week, while we are in the midst of several wars that have been going on for nearly a decade.
In the midst of this, Grammy-winning singer/songwriter/rapper Everlast has crafted Songs Of The Ungrateful Living, a masterful 15-cut collection that serves as a soundtrack for modern America. It’s an album that pulls from several seemingly unrelated musical and thematic corners of the country to poignantly highlight not only the bleak status of our nation and its inhabitants but also the untapped potential of both.
“I just wrote a group of songs and they all started to have the theme of darkness,” Everlast says. “It’s like the ‘80s again, almost, and I’ve always liked Springsteen’s Darkness on the Edge of Town and Billy Joel’s ‘Allentown.’ I feel it’s like that again, especially today. I woke up to 600-point losses in the market. I just tap into what’s around me, but I didn’t have a title for the album for a long time. One day I was just thinking that the ungrateful living is everybody. Anybody that takes a breath probably doesn’t appreciate how much that breath is worth. I see a whole lot of people taking life and the world for granted. It’s not even a slight on anyone. It’s everyone. Me too.”
To this end, the slow, brassy “Some Of Us Pray” recognizes that we can’t break everything we fix, while lead single “I Get By” documents how people try to deal with a sinking housing market, the need for employment and a lack of resources. Although the song’s protagonist barely gets by, the concept was inspired by the hyperbolic material excess celebrated in several rap songs and videos.
Then there’s the sobering “Little Miss America” chronicles a fatherless household, soldiers at war and friends being left behind. The latter, in particular, was the result of some intense soul searching, reflection and interaction.
“That song is a direct result of my trip to Iraq,” Everlast says. “I had written most of it in anticipation of going. I knew some cats that were soldiers and because on the last album I wrote that song ‘Letters Home from the Garden of Stone,’ a lot of soldiers have reached out to me. I’ve heard their stories so I think there’s a little bit of all of that mixed in there. It’s what America has become. She loves the paparazzi. America’s responsible for stuff like Snooki. Really? Everybody’s trying to sell their story. Say what you want to say, but when I was young, America did stuff. You could actually buy and live and eat and drive and wear everything American. It just doesn’t mean anything to anybody anymore. Now, the results of all that are starting to come in.”
The repercussions of mistakes made drive the acoustic guitar-driven “Long At All,” while the heavy “Gone For Good” examines how a patriarch battles to fight his own demons while providing for his family.
And with Songs Of The Ungrateful Living, Everlast again shows that he’s one of the most talented people to ever mix musical styles.
