For our last show of 2023 we had the great pleasure to host Jazzanova’s Juergen von Knoblauch & DJ Amir of 180 Proof Records.

It was a relaxed edition as they played eclectic music from Jazz to Afro to Brazil and House as well as some of our favourite own releases of Sonar Kollektiv such as Shirley Turner’s - I Wish You A World Of Happiness (reissued this year, including a smooth alternative version from The KBCS & Nora Becker), Pete Josef, Feiertag and more.

With a slew of fantastic releases under his prolific Shades of Sound label, we're pleased to share this suitably colourful Islander Cast with you. In his own words...

In keeping with the tone of the Island Cast series and the recent rise in temperatures, I've selected a bunch of records to suit! Expect breezy boogie, Afro flavours, Zulu funk, calypso melodies and South African disco.

Islander Cast (#12) - Joe Morris

Next up in Mr Bongo’s Record Club mix series, we’re delighted to welcome São Paulo based DJ, @giununez. Collecting music since she was a young child, Giu started piecing together the sounds she had been digging into DJ sets from the age of 18. Fast forward 16 years and Giu’s prominence as an eclectic and inspiring DJ and selector has seen her regularly grace the lineups of some of Brazil’s best parties and festivals including Gop Tun Festival, Coala Festival and DGTL São Paulo. Further afield, European tours have seen her playing at Amsterdam Dance Event alongside gigs in the likes of London, Paris, Prague, Bordeaux and beyond.

Giu is also part of the Domply collective as a resident DJ of one of Rio de Janeiro’s most loved parties, alongside being a key presence in the São Paulo scene. She contributes to radio shows all over the world with appearances on Worldwide FM, The Lot Radio, Rinse FM, Kiosk, Operator to name just a few. 

For this hour long mix, Giu has put together a selection of sumptuous Brazilian street soul sounds that really highlight the melting pot of influences this scene encompasses. In her own words she mentions:

“My intention was to share a bit of Street Soul from Brazil, some more popular songs, some more obscure, but in any case, all beautiful songs about being in love. 

There are too many favourites in here. I love the version of Jorge Ben ‘Menina Mulher Da Pele Preta’ by Sublimes, it's another mix from a single with six minutes that keeps me totally in. There’s also another Jorge Ben version, ‘Meu Namorado’ by Verônica Sabino, which is a very interesting production. 

Luna & Dj Cri ‘Acabou Como Começou’ has so many amazing details to it. The guitars, keyboards and synths - everything is perfect. Inimigo Público with ‘Fantasia’ uses keyboards like guitars, two vocals working in an awesome way. ‘Soltos Pela Noite’ by Nina Catarina has a layer of reggae that catches me every time.”

Mr Bongo Record Club Guest Mix - Giu Nunez

For our third installment of Corridor Radio, we welcome LA-based DJ and producer Daniel T. As a longtime record collector, Daniel T finds inspiration from all corners of the world. For his Corridor Radio mix, he presents a selection of reggae and dancehall. Listen now, and look out for his new song, releasing this summer.

This month's mix is by yet another unsung legend of the San Francisco scene - Ken Vulsion aka Ken Woodard! I first met Ken in the late '90's when he was working as graphic designer for the Hardkiss Brothers' label Sunburn. Since then I've come to admire his design work as well as his incredible DJ history - whether as globetrotting DJ with appearances at Horse Meat Disco, Optimo, Cocktail D'Amore, NYC Downlow and so much more, or as co-founder of queer DJ collective Honey Soundsystem (and person responsible for its incredible design aesthetic) as well as local bear disco bash Go Bang!, not to mention his return to Acid House alongside DJ Spun as Acido Ahora. Ken is currently holding court at neighborhood haunt Underground SF, where Idle Cellars are posted up every Sunday afternoon for new Balearic venture ÜBar and regular appearances at new weekly evening party End of Day at Hawthorne in SF. We're so proud to present this wonderful mix of chilled-out classics and new jams alike, but I'll let Ken introduce the mix himself: 

"KEUKA LAKE (1983—Present)  Thunder awakens those not already awake. The all night party goes on and on. A bottle of Bully Hill Goat White tied to an inner tube, you are floating away."

A few words from Leanne on the mix:
I really enjoyed putting this mix together; I’ve been wanting to do something a little deeper, dubbier, darker but still soulful. Looking back at it, I’m struck by the subconscious echo and influence of my roots at Honest Jons. Not only are many of the HJ family repping,  it’s also a reflection of the broad musical spectrum I was exposed to and influenced by there (backed by Alan and Mark’s exquisite taste and integrity) - from jazz and world to techno and reggae. So in a way, it’s a sort of tribute to my time there but also to all my years in London right up to Worldwide FM. I came over in ’91 - caught the end of rave & hardcore culture then moved through garage, house, acid jazz, jungle, UKG, broken beat up to the present day and the new jazz explosion. I often stop and wonder how a small town Ontario girl found her way on to some of the darkest, duttiest dancefloors in London - both in front of and behind the decks. For me, there is no other place in the world where dance music culture joyfully collides with so many other branches of music to continually create and recreate new forms, new sounds, new energies.

It's the frenchman that had a meteoric rise last year with releases & remixes on a who's who of labels within the House & Disco scene. We all know and love him by now it's Mangabey! His masterfully bouncy and jazzy influenced productions are on everyones usb stick and if he's not making the track, he's being called in to lay down some serious keyboard action on one. This extended mix from 'Bey will get you thinking of warmer climates & cooler drinks, enjoy!
