'Dar-Disku' comes from the 1970s Egyptian pop culture magazine of the same name and directly translates into 'home of the disco'. A label for all things psychedelia, hip hop, disco, strange and pure from the Middle East region. Since launching in late 2018, Dar Disku have toured the world and played shows in the likes of, Istanbul, Dublin, Dubai, Bahrain, Bombay Lisbon, London and now Paris. They have hit main stages alongside Habibi Funk, Nabihah Iqbal, Awesome Tapes from Africa and more. Their first release “Dar Disku 001” and live shows have received critical acclaim from the likes of Resident Advisor, Clash, Vice, I-D and BBC Radio.

WAREHOUSE FIND!  Look what a friend brought me from a cellar in Nottingham.... 20 copies on bandcamp for a fiver each...

Ok so this was my first ever Red Rack’em release from 2004. Remixes of Yvette Michelle and Tweet which I self released on my own pirate soul label. I beatmixed the Yvette acapella with a Love Unlimited Orchestra instrumental and despite one being plus one and the other being minus one they were perfectly in key. Piccadilly Records described it as ‘the best rework of all time’ or words to that effect.

Crazy to think that 16 years ago, while being a semi employed part time college teacher/bar DJ/wildman, I managed to pay for 500 of these to be made and a repress. I think I ended up selling 750-1k which was pretty amazing. Shouts to Yam Who? Blackbeard and Red Astaire for the HUGE inspiration as I wouldn’t have made these first records if it wasn’t for their homegrown remixes which made me think ‘I can do it too’. Shouts to Gary from Funky Monkey (RIP) for sorting me with the well chosen acapellas and encouraging me to do the Smugglers Inn series!

Gonna stick these cheap on bandcamp if anyone wants a mint slice of history.
