TROPICAL DIPPING

For those who were asking what the mysterious mix that was put on after the DJs stopped playing outside at the Life and Death party in Art Basel, here it is. A mellow trip prepared by Greg from Thugfucker and presented here as a little thank you from all of us at Life and Death. 

It's been an amazing year and we're so very appreciative of all the support we've gotten as we've adventured forwards on this incredible musical trip together. We've got lots of exciting things planned for the year ahead (and beyond!) and we look forward to continuing together on this ride wherever it takes us.

Thanks for being there with us along the way. It really does mean the world to us...

The Adventures of Soul Clap Episode 52 was originally posted May 20th, 2009.

Sometimes the quality of talent that we have at our weekly Wednesday party, Midweek Techno, just BLOWS me away. Like does Boston even realize the resource they have right under their NOSES??? Doubtful, but alas, we keep on truckin.

Take for example a few months back when we PROUDLY presented the extraordinary talents of the young producer/live performer Nicholas Jaar. At only 19 years old (a FRESHMAN at Brown University) this young French transplant and musical prodigy has created quite a stir with releases for the likes of Wolf + Lamb and AirDrop Records and now on his own imprint, Clown and Sunset.

Iâ€™ve always been a bit iffy about Ableton sets, quite often it seems like the energy just isnt there. Nicolas Jaarâ€™s performance however, is quite the contrary, his music weaves together like the gils of a french accordion, taking us all over the musical spectrum, way beyond simply DANCE music. Melodies, moods, emotions, seems like skyâ€™s the limit for young Nico.

Just a few more tidbits: Seth Troxlerâ€™s remix of Nicolas Jaar â€œThe Studentâ€ was the flipside to the recent deep bomb â€œAphrika EPâ€ that seems to be getting canned everywhere. Donâ€™t sleep just cuz it doesnâ€™t feature The Angelizer. Also, Nico is in cahoots with fellow Parisian Le Loup (performing at Midweek Techno June 3rd), who has also just released digitally the â€œSee Line Epâ€ on Wolf + Lamb, again with a remix of â€œThe Studentâ€ and another titled â€œNicoâ€™s Bath Danceâ€ which I imagine was created by both of these two yoots.

"I’ve always been sensitive to my surroundings and the world is in a very vulnerable place at the moment. I felt I needed to express my true emotions through something a little bit different to a conventional DJ mix and also that just writing one song was not going to be enough.

It was almost like composing a score, the only difference being that the pictures were only in my head. My ambition was for the music to evoke a visual response in the listener rather than just an emotional one. To do that I took some audio snippets of real life current affairs scenarios that really struck a chord in me and then used my DJ instinct to think of a track/musical piece that would fit well to that particular scene. Sometimes when I couldn’t find exactly what I wanted I added my own music over existing music or did my own sound design to create my own sound effects and also wrote some original pieces in the moment. It was very important to me to create ultimate flow and I felt this could only have been achieved without having any beats supporting the music. I also didn't want to make it eclectic nor constant as I felt that would disrupt the listener’s focus emotionally. There is a strong dynamic range throughout similar to classical music and also some parts that are almost meditative and then in contrast some more intense moments.

Here's an eclectic little mix I put together as the first of a series that I'll be uploading on the first of every month. Expect all manner of groovy and melodic tunes you can't help but dance like a fool to.

TÂCHES - #1 FEBRUARY MIX

La Payara is a project spear-headed by Colombian producer Claudio Tantimonaco. Heavily influenced by artists that mesh traditional sounds with electronic beats (like Dengue Dengue Dengue, Nicola Cruz and El Remolon), La Payara fuse folklorica, with psychedelia and cumbia.
Having seen Claudio DJ the lead singer from Colombia’s most successful alternative act, grammy and latin-grammy nominated Bomba Estéreo, immediately invited him to play at their Caribbean beach festival (Esteréo Beach) to 3000 people.
Since then La Payara have gone from strength to strength playing the club circuitin Colombia, Corona Sunset event sand recently also supported Bomba Estéreo.
They played a live set on Redlight Radio when they were invited to perform on the radios one-off Bogota broadcast.
They were included in Sounds and Colours ‘New Colombian Bands That You Need To Hear’ and described by Noisey as “A mixture in which multiple cultures land with a psychedelic touch.”
