Amir Abdullah is part of Hip Hop history as a sample excavator, music historian, compilation curator and DJ who’s already acknowledged alongside some of his childhood heroes. As a DJ he’s rocked parties from Brooklyn to Berlin, where he’s been based for the past few years; as a producer he reinterprets classic cuts into innovative remixes; as an educator he lectures on topics ranging from cultural appropriation in Hip Hop to the history of independent jazz; as a radio DJ his monthly residency for Worldwide FM, The Khronicles, airs every first Tuesday; and as a curator and label executive he’s responsible for over a dozen releases for his label 180-Proof Records.

 

His latest release, distributed by BBE Records, is DJ Amir presents Strata Records -The Sound of Detroit Volume 1 and coming soon is an album he executive produced and is particularly proud of: Strata Records - The Sound of Detroit - Reimagined by Jazzanova.

Amir’s love of jazz magical musical moments buried in forgotten grooves led him to his initial fame as one half of the legendary mixtape and DJ duo: Kon & Amir. Their half-dozen “On Track'' mixes and three “Off tracks compilations for BBE.

 

While he’s best known as a DJ and compiler of choice tunes, Amir’s expertise also extends to the business side of the music industry hustle. Starting off in 1996 as an entry-level Fat Beats employee, he rose to Vice President before moving on to A&R for Rapster/!K7 and in 2007 he helped launch Wax Poetics’ record label where he worked until 2010. In 2011 he started his record label, 180-Proof, which owns the exclusive rights to release Strata Records’ influential back catalogue and unreleased sessions.

 

Amir lives for sharing his passion and knowledge about obscure and underappreciated music whether it’s as a music industry executive or an educator. Like the jazz musicians that continue to inspire him, Amir Abdullah keeps pushing the envelope of adventurous music into new and exciting places, shedding light on forgotten artists and sounds while inspiring future musicians and music lovers worldwide.

Hi Everybody. I'm very happy to start a new year to share "My Favorite" Jazz discoveries with you. For the first show of 2022, I invited the most talented, tasteful and elegant DJ from Barcelona : Virginie. For MIMS she recorded a fantastic mix, a special Broken beat session with killer tracks from 1998 to 2021.

As usual I put together a selection of some recent Future Jazz Classics including the brand new Kerbside Collection, Robert Glasper, Jimi Tenor and Kabukabu, Alex Fisher and the nice collaboration between Jazzanova, DJ Amir and the legendary Strata Records imprint.

Thought it was a good time to do a tribute to one of my favorite indie labels, PM Records. Listening to their music is kind of like a sci-fi-jazz-adventure, where the sound isn't easily labeled but the music is taking the listener in all kinds of directions while keeping a solid groove. Sweet Nothings w/ Jeff Higgins - June 2023

Here comes a new Red Stripe Disco delivery with this 12th delivery. It finally took around 1 year to collect the records for this new episode. I could have waited a bit more (not all of the wants were cleared from the wantlist) but I wanted to drop that one within this summer. I had some nice surprises on the way though, that I am happy to share with you with this new mix! 

As usual, the selection focuses on "reggae not reggae" stuffs from the 70's / early 80's - ranging from killer UK Lovers Rock to Disco & Boogie, even a couple of Rap stuffs, with a few nice covers on the way. All of the records selected are related to Jamaica and/or Reggae labels, with one exception being from Trinidad... 

I hope this new episode will please your ears & feet, and will be helping finishing this nice 2016 summer in the nicest way possible! 
I have already started the quest for a 13th mix, with some dope records already on the list!
