Lena Ortega (aka Leena Lee) is a sound artist, field recordist, researcher, designer and teacher whose line of research explores the intersections between natures/cultures. Member of the interdisciplinary research group Arte+Ciencia at the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM). She has been a visiting artist and researcher in Spain, Portugal, Germany, Italy and Finland and has participated in national and international group exhibitions. She has published articles in collective books on design, philosophy and sound art publications. Currently host of the radio program Sin Superficie, la Piel no es el Límite, dedicated to the active practice of listening. She presents works, mostly by women and non-binary artists, in the fields of sound ecology, sound art and experimental music.

She has worked as a multidisciplinary artist and designer for the Mexican electronic and sound art scenes and she is now part of Radio Nopal with her radio show called Bulla, featuring the work of women and non binary sound producers. Based in Sweden, she is also a designer working in Research & Development at Arduino, the innovation and open source technology company.

Ciudad Animal es una obra  que nos da un recorrido por entornos de la ciudad entremezclados con colchones armónicos que están presentes a lo largo de la obra como representación de la virtualidad y que nos conducen a memorias sonoras que nos sitúan en la pandemia; tratando de reflejar el contraste del caos que se vivió externamente en las ciudades cuando inició, como también la rutina del encierro en los hogares y la posterior libertad de la naturaleza. La obra termina con mi imaginario sonoro de la ciudad completamente habitada por animales que aprovechan nuestro encierro.

Meira Asher’s work challenges accepted conventions of practice and genre, even within the supposed open-minded circles of the Avantgarde. A composer, performer and Human Rights activist, she freely oscillates between, through and beyond the fields of Sound art and Radio art. In the past 20 years her artistic practice has been focusing on in-depth and long- term projects, and she has been working assiduously, amassing many different projects in different veins. She is the producer of the independent Radioart show radioart106 since 2014 and a former lecturer at Haifa university's Art School (2012-22). Her works were released on Crammed, Sub Rosa, Auditorium, Raash Records and Ultima Ratio labels, but mostly independent through her own platforms. Her recent works include TANSIKتنسيق for Radio Reina Sofia Madrid, a Hebrew version of Antonin Artaud’s radio essay Pour en finir avec le jugement de Dieu and Sonic Voyage of Resistance for Radio Art Zone.

This piece is based on a train trip from Toronto to Vancouver in August 2018, reflecting on the journey, and the widespread smoke and freight delays that structured it. The way that I worked with the sounds was inspired by a quote from Dylan Robinson's curatorial score Soundings (Kingston ON 2018)  "the sub-frequency of colonial labour resonates your body". Vocals are by myself and Narcy (the Narcicyst). This piece premiered at New Adventures in Sound Art, South River, ON, in multi-channel form. Thanks to Darren Copeland for his work with me on that version.

The piece is a binaural composition focused on a sonic interpretation of being at home in these complex present times, and the possibility to escape from all that. So many domestic and private spaces/places are combined together in order to narrate an emotional state of suspension, and perturbation.
