Recording of my set of all original material, opening the House tent at the 1998/99 Gathering festival, Canaan Downs, Aotearoa - New Zealand.

The tracks were all made with hardware samplers, synths & drum machines, recorded to DAT and a computer was only used for MIDI sequencing.
A weird mix of electronica, acid drum n bass (?) and house, it represented a mix of different records I was listening to at the time.

These days I mostly play disco and boogie records, but my First True Love Affair was with deep house. For me Easter weekends bookends summer and what better way to close it out than to dust off some of my favourite records and play a deep house set for sunset at Auckland's Saint Alice bar overlooking the viaduct harbour. Live From Nami Record Bar June 2024

Alan Parsons is quoted as saying “audiophiles don’t use their equipment to listen to music, audiophiles use your music to listen to their equipment”.

I thought of this ahead of playing at Kemuri Hi-Fi in February 2025 and selected a bunch of my favourite records with high production values to put their custom Tub’s Audio sound system through its paces.

The first time I heard their sound system I knew I wanted to play Jazzanova’s remix of MJ Cole’s Sincere on it and the room and system didn’t disappoint. 
Don't worry dirty disco lovers- we get there ;-)

Who has 3 hours to listen to music these days? Here are some scenarios where you could:
- Visit Kemuri Hi-Fi, taste their wares while listening to a wide range of tune selectors
- Saturday night house party
- Sunday morning house party

Leon Dahl aka Leon D has been producing electronic music and DJing since the 90s.  Influential in the first wave of Kiwi house producers as part of the Wellington-based Cuffy & Leon D production team, Leon D continues to release disco and electronic-influenced house music.   His new release "Stolen" is out now on UK label Hot Digits Music’s Year Eleven compilation which reached number 1 on Juno Download’s album chart.  Other recent include releases “Devil’s Play Thing” on Australian label That’s Not An Edit, and the "Gimme Love" EP on Kiwi label Grass Green Recordings which peaked at number 14 on Juno Download’s Nu-disco/Disco chart.  Now based in Auckland, Leon D continues to carry the torch for all-vinyl sets on the DJ circuit playing original disco, funk, soul, boogie & house music at hot spots like Goblin, Nami Record Bar, and 
Kemuri HiFi.

My friends at Goblin celebrate their first birthday this month. Happy birthday! What a milestone! It's an absolute pleasure being part of the art curation provided by the lads at Music First . I had a cracker night there on Saturday night. All nights up there are magical but Saturday was something extra special. A Long Hot Sexy Night IYKYK ;-) It was filled with up for it peeps wanting to boogie right through to 3am. At one point I realised the dance floor had somehow crept round from in front of the booth to beside the booth, then into the booth. Usually that is a no go zone especially round turntables and the lovely staff came to check to see if they needed to be moved on but it was somehow cool and we were all connected on the same buzz man. 
It's those sort of nights that I cherish. Thanks Goblin and Goblins!

Leon cut his musical teeth playing guitar in '90s rock band Fat Mannequin, which introduced him to both the live stage and studio environment from age 16.
In '98, frustrated by the lack of tonal variety in guitars, Leon swapped his guitars for a collection of keyboards and samplers, and the rest is history. As a natural progression from producing dance music, Leon D started DJing in 1999.

Leon has clocked up DJ support slots for many international acts including Ian Pooley, Eddie Matos, FC Kahuna, DJ Joshua, Dano, Miles Hollway and Jonathan Yeo.

Leon was also part of the Cuffy & Leon D production team.
In Wellington, Cuffy and Leon teamed up in 1999 combining their gear and knowledge in pursuit of creating their own sound. 
With a number of vinyl and CD releases in the golden era of NZ dance music they crafted their sound from electronica to disco.

By day, Leon is Product Manager for the Recording, Synth, DJ & Livesound brands at Rockshop, New Zealand's largest musical instrument retailer.
