05 Set Break

It was right around 3 and a half years ago, at a small event in Detroit called LAZER TAG, that I met intergalactic funk wizard Freddy Todd﻿. Since then, I have come to call Fred one of my closest friends in this whole music thing. His song, "Winter Defroster" has held a special place in my heart throughout our friendship, as I feel that it truly represents all that is good in the funk-glitch realm while also symbolizing our brotherhood...so when Fred asked me to remix one of his tracks, it was a no brainer which one I chose.

Unfortunately this remix could not be featured on Fred's remix album due to a name conflict and the label refusing to release it as a result of that conflict, so I have decided to post it up for everyone to enjoy. Without further ado, I present to you my remix of one of my favorite songs of all time.

About 6 years ago, before I went under the alias Defunk, I created experimental electronic music including a lot of downtempo chill af under the name Paradigm. None of it was released. My music has evolved and progressed into so many new facets of music but every once in a while its nice to throw back to some smooth, pretty music. I reached out to Frase a year ago after my jaw dropped from hearing the original to this song, and he happily sent me the acapella. Finally, I've had a chance to put a new spin on it, enjoy!

"Mind Up" is the fourth single from Coachella performing, neo-soul talent Leo Napier’s debut EP. Born in the US but now a proud London Ladbroke Grove resident, you’ll recognise the versatile songwriter’s crisp vocals as featuring alongside Wu-Tang Clan’s Raekwon on Gramatik’s most successful single to date, Native Son. Chart topping dance act GRiZ’s electro-funk take on Before I Go Away was released by the DJ last year and has garnered millions of streams to date. This follows from their previous collaboration A Fine Way To Die which also has streams in the millions. The single from Leo’s EP ‘Mind Up’ (out Autumn 2017) premiered on Wonderland in June 2017 and has already picked up millions of Spotify streams. The EP is a collection of urban tales, a mix of classic funk/soul with hard hitting electronic rhythms produced by eclectic worldwide talents. GRiZ - Never Had A Bad Trip

Leo Napier has become a "prominent voice in the electronic funk/soul arena" (Stereofox) since emerging from the New York EDM circuit in 2015.   Leo came on to the scene by contributing several songs to projects by pioneering DJ/producers GRiZ and Gramatik. He captured the attention of Wu-Tang Clan’s Raekwon, who features alongside Napier on Gramatik’s most successful single to date, “Native Son.” The stellar collaboration was followed by “Native Son (Prequel),” also written and performed by Leo. It went on to become the lead track off Gramatik’s full-length album, Epigram, released in 2016.

It’s been a busy year for Napier, who once again teamed up with GRiZ on the track “Before I Go.” Their previous collaboration “A Fine Way To Die” has garnered millions of streams to date. 

Leo is a musical chameleon. His voice and lyrical tendencies lend themselves to a variety of genres from folk, to hip-hop and Neo-soul.  His versatility and magnetic stage presence captivate audiences wherever he plays.

His upcoming record is in-keeping with recent collaborations within the EDM genre, a mix of classic funk/soul with hard hitting electronic rhythms. The songs are gritty urban tales with a cast of colourful characters peppered with Leo's signature brand of dark humour.
