DJ Shadow, widely acknowledged as a crucial figure in the development of experimental, instrumental hip-hop, has returned with ‘The Mountain Will Fall’ via Mass Appeal Records [and Believe Digital in France], his first full length release since 2011. The 12-track album finds DJ Shadow exploring new realms in addition to the deep samples and kinetic soundscapes that helped to launch his career 20 years ago. On ‘The Mountain Will Fall’ he’s shifted further toward original composition, a vast experimentation of beats and textures, synthesizers and live instruments including horns and woodwinds. The album features Run The Jewels, Nils Frahm, Matthew Halsall, Ernie Fresh and more.

The title song “Site of the See-Thru” reinforces the underlying trope of the lyrics: the invisible is seen, the unspeakable is uttered. This is achieved indirectly through a list of clues – an item of clothing, a dream, a scent – that leads the listener like a detective through multiple plot twists. Like Akira Kurosawa’s movie Rashomon, each part – in this case each verse – provides a different interpretation of the same situation.

06. Call The Dawn

We've been tight with Peckham collective and record label Rhythm Section for a long time now, and catching wind of a new release is always a very big deal. Aukland-born and Peckham-based duo Chaos in the CBD have been on our radar for a minute. You'll probably know these two as the hands behind their seminal debut Midnight in Peckham, released last year. Their new release, Invisible Spectrum, doesn't disappoint. Our favourite of the tracks, "Significant Others" brings the EP to its peak with heavy jazz influences, a bongo beat and serious dance capabilities. Get ready to be wrapped up in the kind of groove that makes you forget all the bad stuff.

The Invisible Spectrum is released on 9th September.
