Glo Phase is the solo project of professional composer and multi-instrumentalist, Joseph Rusnak. Glophase’s new album “Blink” invites listeners into a world of live, vibrant, and captivating electronic music where spontaneity shines. ‘City To City: Johannesburg’ is the first in a new series of V/A releases which will shine a light on exciting producers from a different city for each edition. What better place to start than The City Of Gold, somewhere synonymous with deep and soulful house and whose scene and artists have finally begun to get global recognition despite the relative geographical isolation. Labels such as Kid Fonque’s Stay True Sounds have been an important platform for South African artists and who can deny the incredible journey of Black Coffee. Deep house really is a way of life for many young people growing up in often challenging conditions and it’s been exciting to see many becoming known outside of their own country and starting to gig internationally.     Here on the debut ‘City To City’ we showcase 6 tracks from 6 different artists hailing from Johannesburg, relative newcomers rubbing shoulders with more established names.  Kicking off the release we have one such producer who has been slowly but surely stamping his mark over the last 10 years: KaySoul. With output having appeared on labels such as Shall Not Fade, Dirt Crew, Lazy Days and Tribe KaySoul is definitely making waves with his soulful take on the South African deep sound. ‘Icey Baby featuring Mr Beale’ keeps things raw and minimal, letting the vocal stay front and centre, a naivety and playfulness giving an almost demo-feel to the production.     Sculpturedmusic steps up next with ‘Midnight Talk’. Another SA artist who has earned his stripes with some huge tracks including Sad To Think which deservedly became a substantial hit, Sculpturedmusic’s contribution to the release keeps things deep, percussive and rolling with an African vocal sample backed up by pensive piano chords. With just a handful of releases on his own Herbal Soundz label as well as the much-lauded vinyl label Adeen, SizLeCaude is one of the exciting up and coming artists worthy of attention. Taking a classic early 00’s deep house approach on ‘Far Apart’ he .

It’s a pleasure to present the ‘Within’ EP, from Brooklyn-based producer JKriv. An unexpected musical statement by the Razor-N-Tape co-founder that draws from his varied musical history, including conservatory Jazz training, decades of producing in various styles of music, and touring as a live musician.  A realization of projects that were begun anywhere from 2 to 12 years ago, these pieces were written, produced, and performed almost entirely by J alone.  Inspired by Larry Heard, Alice Coltrane, Azymuth, and Nala Sinephro, the ‘Within’ EP blends acoustic with electronic elements, and digital production techniques with analog hardware to craft a sound that centres space, subtlety, and introspection. 
 
Opener ‘Tuesday Morning’ strikes a wistful tone, with billowing waves of effected guitar, enveloping pads and driving organic percussion. The understated and meditative title song of the EP layers rich analog synth textures over a foundational bass pattern, as electronic and acoustic drum polyrhythms interact in the unusual 5/4 time of the song . ‘Eversweet’ balances a whimsical harmonic and melodic motif with modular synth stabs and flourishes, ultimately building to a churning spiritual peak. ‘The Disturbance Stays’ juxtaposes a driving and insistent rhythmic backbeat with soaring synth work from keyboard wizard Jason Lindner (David Bowie, Donny McCaslin Band). The parting message ‘Shine ur light’ is a hopeful and meditative breath, awash in delayed and dusty guitar, lush synth pads and a gentle rhythmic pulse. And as an epilogue, ‘Without’ isolates the hypnotic percussion track ‘Within.’ 
 
The songs on this EP each have their own emotional focus, but collectively are meant to embody feelings of space and warmth, peace, and conflict.

Originally from Malaga but a Berlin resident for the past 13 years, Carlo is thrilled to unveil his first album released under his own record label, Bisiesto. This label stands out for its unique approach, releasing just one album every four years on leap day, February 29th.  In contrast to his previous style, this album blends all his musical influences into a unique mixtape of instrumentals. 
 
The inspiration emerged when, caught in the circumstances of the pandemic, Carlo immersed himself in creating a sonic landscape that captured the essence of his experiences. Amid those challenging months, he found solace in sharing the book "Where the Wild Things Are" with his son before bedtime. A nightly experience that turned into an emotional journey to the land of imagination, weaving the uncertainty of those days with the joy of fatherhood into a tapestry of sound. Featuring excerpts from classic animations The Fruitties, Dragon Ball, Captain Tsubasa, Sesame Street, He-Man, ThunderCats, Mazinger Z, and Wacky Races evoking childhood nostalgia and characters.
 
Reminiscent of Nightmares on Wax, Kid Loco, and Mushroom Jazz, this album offers a unique auditory experience. Lora Ute brings a hint of tangy mellowness to ‘Because’ balancing dreaminess with playful notes, while Jose Fernancaster, with his immaculate guitar skills, infuses ‘Todo Mal’ with sexy guitar riffs and wahs.  Intr0beatz's hip-hop touch enhances ‘Lemon Haze’, while Black Loops, a percussionist at heart, collaborates on ‘Midnight Cruiser’ to encapsulate the solitude of night-time city cruising with a lo-fi sound. Piek rounds off ‘Esperanza’ with an empowering bassline, tying the track together with a golden ribbon.

In our 20th celebration year we welcome back Loz Goddard! It’s been quite a while since we last saw him on our label. With his standout debut collab release with Harry Wolfman in 2016 he has developed a unique mix of electronica, deep soundscapes and lush organic Deep House on labels such as “Oath”, “Razor N Tape”, “Church”, “Outplay” and “Apparel Music”. Now he finally returns with a mini album that features beautiful crafted ambient and electronica cuts paired with three upbeat tracks that will for sure shake the dance floors in and outdoors this summer! Enjoy!

In his own words, here are some insights on the influences and production process of these six pieces:

The release is named after a night in the White Hotel in Salford watching Skee Mask. At the time I had a bunch of unfinished ambient ideas as a result of making “Balloon Tree Road” (out on Oath). There were a lot of ideas I still loved that didn’t get finished for that release, so I set about finishing them late 2022 & early 2023 with the view to releasing an EP or ‘mini album’ that was again angled a bit more towards home-listening.

The more upbeat tracks are newer jams that I created in 2023. I wanted to include a few club-ready tracks on the record as well, so the release appeals to DJ’s as well as home listeners. I approached the production much like my past two records on Oath, with lots of live drum elements, some sampling and a mixing approach which keeps everything sound warm and organic. It’s rough round the edges - as has been the case with my productions of late - and offers a nice contrast to my DJ sets and radio shows at the moment, in which I am playing mostly Deep/Progressive House, Breaks & Techno.

There’s some influence on the title track from the Deep & Lo-Fi House sound of artists like Baltra & Mall Grab, and I have taken influence from all the breaks I’ve been playing in DJ sets for ‘How’s This for a Vague Song Title’.
