LYO presents EDF "Electronique De France" (Snippets) OUT 19/08/2024

Multi Culti serve up a full-length treat from Peruvian artist Aristidez.

Cofounder of Lima-based party collective Casa Locasa and the non-profit label Behua Icara (translated as Healing Rhythms), in support of indigenous culture, Aristidez has recently relocated to Berlin.

With releases on Calypso, Disque-Discos, and Kebrada, as well as remixes for Amplio Espectro, Ida Sound, Discos Aquelarre, Rotten City Files, and Playground Records, Aristidez has quietly made a name for himself with a growing catalog of low-key dance tracks that have been championed by the likes of Matias Aguayo, Andrew Weatherall (RIP), and Inigo Vontier, to name a few.

With an emphasis on the hypnotic power of rhythm, Aristidez channels indigenous influences in subtle fashion, alluding to visionary experience without resorting to pastiche or obvious tropes. There are freaky tribal rhythms but no shaman samples, just expertly produced tracks than reveal an expansive set of electronic influences that range across tempos and decades, from breaky 90s rave, 80s proto-trance, cult dub, downtempo and more. It’s listenable, danceable, heady and kaleidoscopic stuff that should stand the test of time.

Following the hypnotic pulse of his acclaimed album El Hijo del Maiz, released through Lumière Noire Records, which introduced the original version of "Bo Ni Ke," Mexican DJ/producer Iñigo Vontier returns with Bo Ni Ke Remixes, an EP that reimagines one of his most captivating tracks. Released through the boundary-pushing Mexican imprint Duro Label, this collection breathes new life into "Bo Ni Ke" with four dynamic reinterpretations from Musumeci, Moisees and two new version from Vontier.

Leading the charge is a mesmerizing remix by Italian Musumeci, who infuse the track with their signature blend of deep, cosmic grooves and ethereal textures, taking "Bo Ni Ke" on an acid journey. Moisees, co-founder of Duro Label, delivers a remix that amplifies the track's hypnotic essence, layering infectious rhythms with a raw, underground energy that resonates on dancefloors. Rounding out the EP, Iñigo Vontier himself presents his "Unwanted" Remix, showcasing his evolving sound with a darker, more psychedelic twist that delves deeper into his experimental roots.

Closing the EP is the Ketamine Version, a stripped-down, hallucinatory rendition that deconstructs the original into its most primal sonic elements. Bo Ni Ke Remixes stands as a testament to Iñigo Vontier's fearless approach to electronic music, blending cultural influences with forward-thinking production. Each remix offers a unique perspective while honoring the original's mystique, solidifying "Bo Ni Ke" as a track that transcends boundaries and continues to evolve. Wah Wah 45s present two very special cover versions from our beloved Afro-electronic duo, Raz & Afla. Having recently released their sophomore LP, Echoes Of Resistance, to great acclaim and support ranging from Nick Grimshaw on BBC 6 Music to Tash LC on BBC Radio 1, the pair offer up their versions of two very different pieces of music that have become a mainstay in their live sets, and means a lot to them personally.
First up is their version of the deeply rooted Afro-disco come pop/soul classic Going Back To My Roots.
“We love this song. The lyrics resonate with us, talking about the meaning of connection to a land and its people. The history of this song is also fascinating, from Hugh Masekela and Orlando Julius through Odyssey and Richie Havens. We wanted to give it our own flavour. You can’t choose your heritage and where you are born. It is always a part of you and we like to celebrate that.”
Written and first recorded by Lamont Dozier in 1977, Going Back To My Roots was famously covered by Richie Havens in 1980 before becoming a huge crossover hit when interpreted by disco outfit Odyssey in 1981. It’s that version that provides the inspiration for the artwork on this release, courtesy of designer Michael Sallit, but musically Raz & Afla very much give their take their own unique dance floor feeling. It’s a version which has received support from Craig Charles and Lauren Laverne on BBC 6 Music.

Next, it's something of a left turn, tackling Aphex Twin’s sleazy and sinister turn-of-the-century dance floor bomb Windowlicker and taking it somewhere completely unexpected, as Raz explains:
“We wanted to go to a different place from our influences for this one. When we told people we will cover this tune everyone said ‘but how?!’ In Raz & Afla style. We had an idea of what elements to recreate from the original and how we can reference it within our spectrum of sounds. It was so much fun to do and really kicks off at our live shows.“
It’s a heavily percussive reinterpretation, replete with spooky wordless vocals, funky guitars and spine tingling synths that builds into something of a future Afro-house anthem, whilst respecting the genius of the original recording. And it’s not only the music that is paid tribute to, with graphic designer Michael Sallit once again coming up trumps and here using the inspiration of Chris Cunningham’s iconic artwork to deliver an equally tongue-in-cheek thing of beauty.

When you love a record too damn much, you will soon discover whether you "got what it takes” to make it yours. Such is the case withTurbo label head Tiga, who has played 11Schnull & Newinfluenzer’s 2023 underground hit “Ich und meine Ubahn” in each and every one of his DJ sets since its non-Turbo release. But unbridled track-passion is not always enough, and sometimes one must take a step back and recognize that the music business is also a business. So our in-house Corporate Development team, which has of late been entirely focused* on figuring out how best to monetize Tintin entering the public domain, set to work, successfully licensing the original while also creating the fun and potentially life-saving opportunity to visualize just how amicable the licensing process was.

All of which brings us to the remix pack at hand. The essentially perfect electro programming and vocal performance of the 2023 original leaves virtually no angle for improvement, save for the fact that the 4:20 runtime not enough for the median touring DJ to satisfy their chatbot mistress before they must begin the exacting work of selecting and mixing the next track. As such, we enlisted producers who could interpret the song from different planes of existence, namely Chilean-German wizard Matias Aguayo, French hardstyle prodigy Krarmpf, German aesthetes Extrawelt, Hamburg electro master DJ MELL G, and Asturian highbrow god Architectural. For reference, the planes conjured by these remixes are as follows: blacked out on Ivermectin; finally beat a pay-to-win mindfulness game; voted the Greatest Living Teen Artist by the readers of US Weekly; transformed into an expressionless little muscleman as if by magic; going viral; and curing jet lag in our lifetime. It is not for us to say which remix corresponds to which realm of human experience, but we do know that it is limited to those options.

Finally, please do not invite a chatbot lover into your marriage. Your spouse cannot hope to compete. And know that this advice comes from our best understanding of current world affairs, and does not represent what a repressed British man would calling “taking the pee.” At their very best, jokes are funny, and the fate of the human bedroom is no laughing matter at all.
