Paolo Russi aka DiscoJuice debuts on Taste Rec. with an accurate 4-tracks EP that fully  captures his unbridled love for Funk, Jazz and vintage movies. 
A musical tale featuring fragments and samples of jazz rhythms, dialogues taken from old movies and several piano, bass, percussion arrangements that note after note turns into your personal soundtrack. 
The curtain rolls out and "Jazz Me" takes the stage introducing the opening credits with a clear and groovy MPC beats enriched by various cuts that expand the sound in a jazzy way, going deeper under the merging of rhodes and synths. 
After a breath, a second of silence, "Come Now" starts and the actors enter the scene: you are immediatly thrown into the fray and hypnotized by a syncopated rhythm that holds dialogue parts without missing the boat. 
Moving on, the plot thickens with "Drama" and the characters face a more excitedly scene: overwhelming dialogues, percussive live sounds, both the moog and the acoustic basses make it intense following a sort of "back to back" inside the composition. 
The climax has gone, so "Do Not Sleep" tells us the end of the journey adding the enigmatic Antioco on the instrumental side and letting the emotions speak through piano and bass lines improvisation.

The Balek Band’s first album, Médecines, is the product of a magma of influences, the emanation of large decade of music infused lives. The emotional tessitura is wide: the dark meadows of “The Balek Bad” reach us through like a mantra from the end of a dark tunnel, while just three track earlier it was a caribbean Zouk euphoria which ruled the world. Inbetween, it’s a wide spectrum of hybrid epiphanies : Hagen & Again is a progressive Dub jewel, even Krauty to an extent, where the instruments play the lead role. Cosmic Barry is across the Channel : thick and broken club music, sweating with subs, yet always disputing it to the Funk accent of the the keys and the slap bass. This list of Geographical and stylistic hybridations simplys goes on, and it’s the XX minutes of the album that put an end to it. But beyond the never-ending list, this first album is alive : its gets us breathing the therapeutical air which fills the world of its creators.

Dans l'orbite de la communauté Abstrack, la danse et la fête ne sont jamais loin : dans Médecines, elle dessinent l'ossature multicolore d’un corps traversé par des impulsions aussi fortes que diverses. La tessiture émotionnelle est large : les brumes obscures de The Balek Bad nous parviennent comme un mantra chanté du fond d'un tunnel, alors que trois pistes plutôt, c’était l'euphorie Zouk caribéenne qui semblait indépassable. Entre les deux, un large spectre de fulgurances hybrides : Hagen & Again est un bijou Dub progressif, presque Kraut, où les instruments sont au centre du jeu. L’outre Manche est incarnée dans Cosmic Barry : club musique épaisse et breakée, qui transpire le sub, mais dialogue en fil rouge avec les accents Funk portés par les claviers et la basse slapée. L’énumération des hybridations spatiales et stylistiques continue presque indéfiniment, et n’est finalement limitée que par les XX minutes de l’album. C’est le temps écoulé qui semble donc être la limite à cet incroyable projet, tout comme il en avait été le catalyseur, s’offrant en quantités pléthoriques au groupe, lors des premiers confinements.

Opener Hired Gun is a tough and raw concoction with coarse, snappy snares, rough drum pings and lots of abrasive texture all making for a physical listening experience.  Midwinter is a deeper and more emotive jam with warm pads dampening down icy hi hats and busy synth work. It is fresh and original and sounds like little else, then Captive gets all deep and space-y with smeared pads and slick metallic hits tied together with a molten acid line. Lastly, Exile is five blissful and beautiful minutes of atmospheric, intergalactic electronic sounds that really take you to another place.

For our 25th release, we'll be revisiting the work of singular Japanese musician Minoru ‘Hoodoo’ Fushimi. In 1983, a young Minoru was working from his home studio in Japan’s Kanagawa prefecture and determined his first release would be an ode to Japan’s musical heritage. Minoru had noticed the younger generation become increasingly disillusioned with traditional Enka songs and decided to breathe new life into the sentimental ballads of old. The multi-talented artist laid down the beat using a TR-606 and played all the additional instruments himself. 

The resulting tracks are two mutations from the energetic style of the originals into much darker and abstract versions, albeit managing to maintain the passion and spirit of the Enka genre. Minoru utilised a number of vocal distortions to honour the original vibrato singing style, executing the tracks in a way that was more of a mesh between early punk squelching of the late 70’s and Troutman’s funk-fuelled voice-box of the early 80’s. In true Minoru style, his vision overshadowed the accessibility and ironically the tracks fell short of their appeal to the younger generation he was aiming to inspire, yet resulted in two timeless renditions.
