Following up to their latest EP, “Elif”, Dutch duo Amy Root return to Reflektor with their anticipated new release, “Ava”. Recorded on the island of Texel, off the Netherlands’ North Sea coast - which endowed them with the time and space to focus solely on music and nothing else, this new five-tracker spans the widest part of Amy Root’s broad scope of inspirations and, in this case, most specifically five paintings by great British artist, Joseph Mallord William Turner. Known for his tormented seascapes and borderline-abstract approach to depictions of natural vistas, Turner’s pieces pushed Lukas and Sjoerd to translate his hair-raising vision into sound, each cut operating as a portal to an intrinsic mental world, but also cohesive as a whole listening experience.

Title-track “AvA” is a five-minute-odd encapsulation of the pair’s soft touch electronics and all-embracing harmonics. Gracefully nostalgic but stare firmly set onto the banks of hope, it’s a mini-odyssey that unfurls, echoing deeper and deeper as the melody etches itself in your mind and into your soul, triggering off a pulsating kaleidoscope of emotions as it travels you.

Diyar, the debut release from Rayne embarks on a trip from the sun of Turkey to the winds of Berlin.

Rayne is a Berlin-based DJ and producer from Turkey. As a resident of Root Radio and DJ, she has been active in Berlin’s independent electronic music scene with her adventurous sets since 2020.

Diyar weaves together the disparate threads of Rayne’s eclectic and ever-expanding musical world, the producer taking the same wildly inventive approach in the studio as she does on the decks. Deep pads, liquid sounds and organic percussion shape the sonic horizons of this wild EP.

From its opening seconds Diyar is immediately as powerfully intoxicating as it is meticulously constructed and curated. Opening track “Gaze” guides us through a mysterious, otherworldly landscape, borne on the back of hypnotic polyrhythms and Rayne’s mesmerising vocals. Shifting gears on title track “Diyar”, Rayne displays her skill at blending organic and digital, weaving electronics with the haunting beauty of the cura, a traditional Anatolian string instrument.

On “The Witch”, we find ourselves in the middle of a ritual in a mystic forest, Rayne’s ethereal vocals emerging as subtle whispers from behind each tree. Diyar’s closing track gives us a clue to understand the inspiration behind Rayne’s fantastical sonic world with field recordings captured from a starry night on a sailboat in the Aegean sea.

Perfectly rounding off the package of Rayne’s debut are two reinterpretations from GOOEY label head Siggatunez, transforming the hypnagogic originals into club-ready floor fillers, melding Rayne’s sonic curiosity with Siggatunez signature raw attitude and masterful dancefloor chops.

On the inspiration behind the EP, Rayne elaborates: “This is a celebration of nature and supernatural feelings, of continents and landscapes that serve as bridges. This is a celebration of those who need to leave places to come to their senses.” Diyar oozes mystical energy, it’s supernatural sonic landscape providing a temporary escape from the contemporary hellscape and a path through the darkness to the other side.

On his second excursion for Oath, Manchester-based producer Loz Goddard continues to nurture the clubby side of his sound with a razor-sharp and bombastic EP that contains all you could ever wish for when it comes to breaks, euphoria, and sonic depth…. 

As a producer, Loz has operated under a number of guises, but one thing has always remained - his elegant and inspired application of melody. His early career was marked by a number of superb releases on labels such as Church, Tusk Wax, Apparel and many more, all of which highlighted a deep affection for groove, tone and atmosphere. The music largely operated within the realms of Deep House - at times spilling over into Nu-Disco - but there was always a little bit of shine on each EP that pointed to other spheres of influence, and it was these references points that made Loz Goddard’s music feel broad, considered and introspective. The music appealed on many levels and provided plenty of worlds and spaces in which listeners could get deeply involved within, and this journey is filled with beautifully polished gems that can be held and admired in your hands time and time again.

Juno's Review : "Plant43 wrote a trio of EPs over the winter season at the end of 2022 and the start of 23 and has been putting them out on his own Plant43 Recordings label. This third part from the man born Emile Facey is another emotional rollercoaster that conveys the wintry scenes in which they were written while also taking you on to the more warm and optimistic light of spring. Lithe electro rhythms and icy synths open up on 'Tidal Flexing' while 'Reflective Waves' gets a little darker and more intense. 'System's Edge' is a celestial cruise with quick, slick drums and masterful leads then 'Mind Drift' channels Drexcyian cyborg funk to close. The final part of the story comes on coloured vinyl but only in limited quantities."

Cybotron has re-emerged in our contemporary cybercultural age when artifactual futures begin a transition into a new era of "Meta". 
 
By combining their knowledge of philosophy, science fiction, and mechanical engineering, at a time when electronic instrument companies were only just beginning to distribute their products to the masses, two prosumer audio technicians named Juan Atkins and Rik Davis were able to re-engineer Cybotron  &ndash;  a combination of the words "Cyborg" and "Cyclotron" (an atomic particle accelerator) &ndash; to be used as a home studio performance music that would change the course of independently produced and distributed electronic music.
 
Dissolving the boundary between singer, songwriter, and producer, Juan Atkins named Cybotron's future forward funkadelic sound "techno" in reference to Alvin Toffler's concept of unlikely "techno rebels" against technocracy. Techno is music that sounds like technology, and its purpose was to help society survive our collision with a universally felt "future shock" by inserting an audio virus into the cultural matrix. 
 
Techno's blueprint spread across the Detroit-Berlin Axis between Metroplex and Tresor. As human society began its transition from a post-industrial to an information-based market economy, Cybotron enabled a thorough system override of the human senses towards a tangible man-machine hybridity and showed the world how to channel their emotions and imaginations into new sound technologies and create new 'sonic' spatialities where listeners can transport themselves out of the physical world into the future. The cover of their debut album Enter (1983) transmitted a fragmented view of a body in motion being digitized mid-stride, dissolving physical and virtual reality into sonic fiction.
 
Today, the man-machine hybridity of Cybotron is still the truest form of techno, coevolving in conversation with the technological music they created and inspired. The latest data disk marks a new chapter that reflects a techgnostic musical expression of the knowledge acquired during their decades-long hiatus. Unlike the dance music industrial replications of the Model 500 formula, acknowledging the content marketing expectations that segments music into specific, sellable genres, this techno music is self-aware.
Cybotron processes dance music tropes spawned from its very own blueprint with a meta-tactical precision out of sync with our current rave new world. 

Cybotron's return demonstrates a studied engagement with what techno was and should be with a peerless update of Juan Atkins' initial inventive idea of do-it-yourself electrically reengineered music xeroxed onto both sides of the 12" &ndash; uploaded directly into the alleys of your mind.

Naya Beat, which translates from Hindi as 'new beat', is focused on uncovering foundational electronic sounds from the subcontinent and South Asian diaspora through reissues, remixes and compilations. It found quick success with its first release, 'Naya Beat Volume 1: South Asian Dance and Electronic Music 1983 - 1992', followed by a rare 1985 Hindi New Wave album by Pinky Ann Rihal. The label now offers up the first of two releases based around the music of cosmic disco pioneer, Studio 54 icon and jazz improviser Asha Puthli, an artist who has recorded, sung or shared the stage with the likes of Roy Ayers, Alice Coltrane, Grace Jones, Barry White, Andy Warhol and many more. From David Mancuso's The Loft, to Giorgio Moroder's early work with Donna Summer, to hip-hop where she has been sampled extensively, Asha's musical influence and impact is profound. She was the first artist of South Asian descent to successfully crossover and make a mark on dance, jazz and pop culture in the West. 

For this LP, the label tracked down the long mythologised original stems and recordings of Puthli's most seminal albums, including ‘The Devil is Loose’, and working closely with Asha, they have tasked a series of producers inspired by her work to remix her music. 

Yuksek opens up with a pumping disco remix of 'I Am Song (Sing Me)' awash with uplifting synths and big claps next to the original vocals, which soar to the heavens. The seminal 'Space Talk' is remixed by Maurice Fulton into super steamy and late-night territory. The live drums and jumbled percussion are lit up with soulful chords as Puthli's carefully delivered vocal seduces up top. 'Lies' (Kraak & Smaak Remix) rides on fat-bottomed drums and bass that unfold with a dub swagger beneath a nebulous eco-system of cosmic synths and dramatic vocals. Label heads Turbotito & Ragz flip 'One Night Affair' into a leggy disco celebration with sweeping synths and bright effects, and Psychemagik's 'Right Down Here' is a pulsating mix of dark, snaking bass and drums with deep space ambience and raw hits making for a turbulent and tense atmosphere. Lastly, Jitwam closes out with a smooth disco sound laced with dynamic drums and cruising chords next to another sensuous top line from Asha Puthli. 

This is a stunning collection of remixes that pay homage to the originals while taking them into new sonic territory. A series of single drops will precede the whole LP; Yuksek (21st July), Maurice Fulton (4th August), Turbotito & Ragz (18th August), Psychemagik (1st September), Kraak & Smaak (15th September), Jitwam + LP (21st September).

A two-year break from releases resulted in the release of ‘Ballon Tree Road’, his debut LP and first release on Oath, and to say the record was a step forward would be an enormous understatement. Here Loz Goddard set down a marker of things to come, as he drew from the melodic outlays that were a cornerstone of his discography to date and permeated these through a spectrum of styles and rhythms that represent everything good about a dance music record. You had the quiet moments, the heart-felt moments, the pure and powerful moments, with Loz exploring everything from Breaks to Ambient, Broken Beat to House, and even some D’n’B thrown in for good measure. This was a marker if there ever was one, and it firmly established Loz’s second-era phase, one where his abilities were given space to shine on a much broader scale.
