Masha Mar - Last Light (STW Premiere)

Coming through as a producer in the early 2000's, nothing much seemed normal. The whirlwind of 90s dance music innovation had given way to a lack of focus, with increasingly innovative and accessible technology making the sounds heard on dancefloors more eclectic but at the same time the parties had started to feel less inspired, as if it were too hard to keep hold of the magic that had swirled around us for the last 10 years.

Against this backdrop, Mark Hawkins immediately stood out by how grounded he was compared to most of the space cadets floundering with their musical calling. Watching one of his staggeringly raw live sets, ripping up the floor with a combination of jacking Chicago house and bare bones techno was to see a pragmatic idealist carving out a unique space, unashamed to reference his inspirations with humour and bombast.

It was perhaps inevitable that Mark’s boundless spirit would see him push through the barriers of the UK’s more experimental audiences to gain greater presence with his entrance to a more underground House sound. Releases followed on Dixon Avenue Basement Jams and Clone before arriving on Houndstooth, blending House and Techno in a way that reached for the sky even while their roots were clearly planted firmly in the ground. Whilst always tough-as-painted-nails, the music progressed from being identifiable through its keen rawness to displaying increasing sophistication.

During a lost year that’s been anything but normal, it’s no surprise that Mark has dug deeper, gathering his influences and ideals into a more experimental, yet relevant and cohesive whole. The Twelve tracks on this new album represent a blossoming of Mark’s creativity; freed from the constraints of immediate dance-floor delivery they explore new territory, rampaging over a landscape of electro-funk, body-rocking house, experimental electronica, euphoric pop, and reflective chill out all underpinned by his accomplished melodic sensibility.

Lead single from the album from the old ways and into the new is ‘Let It Slide’, his second collaboration with Jamie Lidell (following 2018’s “We Should Be Free”) that tears up the rulebook. Beat’s stumble and stutter, resolving in angular B-boy grooves while the bass line sounds like it’s being slapped out by a P Funk-addicted robotic jackhammer. In its sheer disregard for musical conventions, it reprises Lidell’s previous work with Cristian Vogel in their genre-destroying freakbeat combo, Super Collider, and perfectly sums up an album that challenges what ‘normal’ from now on should be.

CB90 Dance Recordings land their second release to the catalogue with one of Berlin's rising stars Anthony Georges Patrice. We were blown away with the class and oozing raw style from both tracks on this EP. Poor Pitch Discrimination is bursting with raw bass energy and tough New York style drums that maintain a pace throughout. This is then balanced with a melodic sweetness that captivates your ear with hypnotic subtle changes in the background. On the B side is Neshama - with a skipping rhythm groove, tense emotional strings & pads that hold you in the air and constantly fill you with warm emotion and a sense of lifting off. Anthony has been building a serious wealth of music on labels like Lossless, Goldmin Music, Dance Artifakts, Frau Blau and many more. We are delighted to have him join the CB90 collective.

West Coast mainstay maverick Dave Aju launches his anticipated new artist imprint Elbow Grease with this timelessly sublime dance floor trip, dripping with outer-space soul and deep ocean-floor sonics. “X17”, a reference to the hypothetical particle and potential Fifth Force discovery, is equal parts warm and cold, smooth and ruff, as a raw UR-schooled electro rhythm base plows through various known musical barriers, adorned with worldly percussion hits, moving synth textures, subtle jazz motifs and vocal incantations.

As one of the last sonic transmissions put to tape at the mighty yet now-defunct Machine Limited/G-Son Studios of The Beastie Boys’ fame and legacy in Atwater Village LA, it’s fit with a solid spine via a driven TR-909, lush OB-Xa leads and PolySix pads, a serpentine SH-101 arp and tight Linn Drum layers. The generously unfolding “Main Mix” is accompanied by both a potent “Rhythm Dub” stripped back for maximum impact, and an ambient high “Viiibe” version offering a more immersive listen and alternative options for adventurous DJs to work into a mix as they feel. A fine intro to the genre-defiant, focus-on-each-piece Elbow Grease credo.

There were soft, fluffy clouds everywhere. They floated between the towering skyscrapers and hung thick close by the mountains in the distance. It were as if they had been painted pink against a backdrop of delicate pale blue.

Kyoto was a magical place, it was unlike anywhere he’d ever been before. The sounds, the people, the buildings and the atmosphere which danced between the backstreets.

It was a shame to be leaving, he might never come back.
 
Locked Groove is a producer who has played a crucial role in the evolution of a new wave of house music. From early releases on Hotflush and Turbo through to his own self released material of late – there has been a consistency and progression to his sound which is hard to contest.

Melody has always played a big part of his sound – his latest EP is titled “C2FX” and features this track called “Kyto”. It’s a beautiful, humble track with a hint of melancholy. Beautiful as ever.

An eerie calm had settled on the beach. The sea was still under the jet-black sky, which was dotted with pinprick stars, like a billion tiny torches shining down from the heavens. The moon cast shadows on the sands and the tranquillity was enhanced by the gentle sound of the waves as they drifted up onto the shoreline and back again. In the distance you could just about make out the thrum of the soundsystem from the bar in the far corner of the beach. It could be playing any song you wanted and anyone you knew could be in there, waiting for you to arrive with a hug and a smile and whatever else you fancied…

It’s a double celebration for the Ransom Note and Bytes family today! As well as being the release day for the four-track Remix EP featuring reworkings of tracks from Water Groove, the stunning debut album from the multi-instrumentalist composer and visual artist Yoann Pisterman, it is also the 40th birthday of R$N friend Enrique “ELO” Leon, the Venezuelan/Colombian DJ also known as Leeon. He just so happens to have provided one of the remixes on the EP, so R$N is posting it to mark this special day.

ELO’s ethereal take on Marbling soothes the mind with a meditative aura of sonic crescendo. As the music evolves, it feels as though we are transcending through unknown dimensions, pervaded by introspection and bliss. This take on Marbling was inspired by a recurrent midnight sitting down at Playa Marmol in Río Claro, a nature reserve in Colombia.

The EP marks the label's fourth release and will be their last digital release before moving onto wax. The EP fluctuates between the genres of breakbeat, 2000s tech house, deep house and downtempo.
