In November Rush Hour is set to release a suitably celebratory and carefully curated compilation from Amsterdam scene stalwarts Kamma & Masalo, named in honour of their day and night party in Amsterdam that’s been going since 2014, and their former Worldwide FM radio show, Brighter Days. Positivity abounds across the compilation which draws not only on the dustiest corners of their record collections, but also the duo’s stash of secret weapons, previously unreleased re-edits, and new productions from friends within Amsterdam’s bourgeoning scene. The three tracks presented here offer a suitably vivid snapshot of the collection’s enticing blend of tactile and colourful house, sunrise-ready workouts, soaring disco, basement-ready throb-jobs, inspired dancefloor dubs and righteous boogie jams.

There’s ‘Kamma & Masalo’s Radio Edit’ of Discotheque’s 1982 Dutch-Belgian disco classic ‘For Your Love’– a highlight of their and Antal’s DJ sets over the last 12 months – and their previously unreleased ‘Dub’ of French-Cameroonian artist Anyzette’s 1984 gem ‘Baladoun’, a low-slung slice of drum machine-rich body music that blurs the boundaries between Italo-disco, Afro-boogie and proto-techno. The inclusion of Peffa’s ‘Routine’ highlights the pair’s ongoing relationship with the little-known producer. He’s been supplying them with unreleased secret weapons for some time and ‘Routine’ – an immersive and emotive treat that blends elements of deep house and Detroit techno – is one of his very best.

James ‘Harri’ Harrigan and Max Raskin are Glasgow duo Manakinz. The former is synonymous with Glasgow’s monumental Sub Club and his multi-storied Saturday night residency that’s been going strong for 33 years,‘Subculture’, alongside his long-time partner and fellow Glasgow legend, Domenic Cappello. Harrigan has put out a long list of releases as The Pa Pa Washington Trio, Daddy’s Favourite, H Foundation, DJ Harri & The Revenge, and Burnt Island Casuals. Max Raskin aka Affi Koman, started DJing in Glasgow clubs in 2006 with a residency at the Liquid Lounge. He was also resident at the legendary Sunday Circus for 9 fun-filled years, earning himself a solid reputation among heads as one of the city’s most thrilling and innovative players. He’s released on Sensu, Esa’s Rememory Music, La Dune, Posterboy, Lyceum Social Club and Huntleys & Palmers Clyde Built Compilation Series. 

Initially Harri and Max were just sending out tracks to friends in the know, but when Weatherall phoned Harri to say he was loving the music, they stepped things up and have since put out on Jacques Renault’s Let’s Play House, Future Boogie, Monologues, Refuge and Mitchell Street. With projects in the pipeline with Jasper James (Harri’s son) and for Ashley Beedle’s North Street, there’s plenty of quality to come in ’24.

Manakinz have put together this maxi EP comprised of eight cuts that range from headsy Alfos chug, to deep down dubby disco, to Detroit-tinged basement filth. You’ve got it all on this ridiculously good collection.

Fresh new label Holybro is the creation of Dutch DJ & producer Ray Monsieur. Hailing from the European dance capital of Amsterdam, his thoughtful and melodic compositions are infused with depth, warmth, and emotions. On his debut release ‘Stronger’, the hypnotic arrangements each tell a musical story. Created in the attic of his parents’ house, when circumstances forced him to return home for a spell, on a Roland TR8S drum machine and a SH101, the soft synth sounds have been lovingly created by Ray, with mixing and mastering courtesy of Nachtbraker (Quartet Series, Red Light Radio and Doka Amsterdam).
 
The majestic opener ‘Forget’ will lift arms, minds, and spirits when it drops, a heads down stomper for the ALFOS faithful no doubt.  ‘My Love’ uses only the feel-good notes in its joyous blend of colourful synth melodies, undulating electronic strings, and soft synth touches. The dreamy yet dynamic techno of title cut ‘stronger’ is bright and reflective. It’s melody is both filtered and drawn out, the resultant music is effortlessly pleasing and awash with a wave of melodic sheen. Closing track ‘Sunshine’ is music made with machines for machines. Trance-inducing hypnotic electronica blended with a heady chord sequence that drives this EP all the way home.

With Ondersteboven, we feel the need to offer a place where established names are mixed with refreshing local talent; talents who are on their way to reach the bigger crowds, but are not yet being heard enough. We’ve been following M.orres for a while now and we really dig his sounds. He’s one of those talents that just need to be out there.

For our Podcast Series we asked him to record an impression of our chapter TUUR. A Vinyl Only this time, made by the promising newcomer from Nijmegen. Barely a year ago, he found himself experimenting with turntables for the first time and he hasn’t stood still since.

Having an ear for a strong flow, he experiments with proggy and hypnotic sounds. His timing is on point and he likes the occasional weird turn. He played his first gigs at Rollijk and Bloemerbar, where proved he can meet the same standard both in the studio and on the floor.

He sent us over these words as way of introduction;

I started djing over a decade ago and played my first gigs in an apres bar in Austria, where I was doing ski seasons at the time. 

I moved back to Scotland to Dundee for uni and eventually became a resident at The Reading Rooms playing with many different parties.

I am also one half of Phazed, a night I hosted along side friend and DJ, Teddy Hannan in the Reading Rooms bringing in artists from all over the UK.

I also produce, starting shortly after I started djing, with precious releases under the name 'Correlate' with releases on Fresh Take records, all over it records and gourmand music.

I moved to Spain a few years back and continue to produce under 'DJsportsmode' with a recent EP release on fresh take records, check it out on SoundCloud and pick it up on their bandcamp!
