Taking good care of Funnuvojere's latest release slot is Clarinets, the new alias of Tbilisi based Gacha Bakradze. The four tracks composing this EP highlight Bakradze’s mastership in designing harmonies. The closing track, and the track that we're premiering today, ‘Afternoon’ is a warm house ballad to round-off the last moments of a long after-hours session.

Multi-dimensional future-jazz outfit JK GROUP release a new EP, Rising on La Sape Records. The brainchild of award-winning saxophonist, Joshua Kelly (30/70 collective, PBS Young Elder of Jazz 2019), the band returns to the label with a follow up EP to the mind-bending 2021 release, What’s Real? 

Where What’s Real? served as a platform for wild experimentation, Rising returns to a more considered and familiar format for the band, offering up 4 cohesive tracks that are deep in conception and expression, at once original and fresh. Conceived after recording an as yet unreleased body of work written whilst undergoing chemotherapy, Rising celebrates bandleader Josh’s survival and eventual recovery from the intense treatment he received for lymphoma in 2020. 

The band stays true to their honed format of jazz traditions melding with influences from electronica and beyond. Like the first release, The Young Ones, Rising sits comfortably in the crossover of raw, live jazz and electronic dance music,  whilst also throwing an unexpected curveball to the listener expanding the palate of the bands sound to a pigment never before heard in their music. The EP takes you on an emotional journey throughout the four tracks, best listened to start-to-finish.

Five talented Norwegian house producers pull out all the stops on the first Mhost Likely Green V/A EP series, ‘Natural High’, with most venturing into house territory to showcase a different shade of their sonic palette. The four-track EP features familiar faces from previous releases, with some featuring artists new to the label.

Kicking things off with his debut on MHL is Hajem (BCR) with his super slick, funky, sexy deep house track called ‘Lost and Found'. A track prepped with vocal licks, bubbly textures, crisp drum patterns, and irresistible instrumental work. Next, is Keecen, who, following his second EP on MHL - ‘Midnight City Joints’, gives a snapshot of his harder house sounds. Steady beats and snarling bass lines for sweaty clubs. The third track is also a debut on MHL and comes from Struve. A deep house tune with funk-inspired bass stabs injecting playfulness into club materials oozing vibes. Finally, it’s up to the new duo Kim Young iLL and Third Attempt to close proceedings. ‘Save Me’ is an assertive downtempo house-inspired track with an acid melody and cosmic soundscape.

For some, melancholy is the joy of being sad. But for A Rocket In Dub, the reawakened project of Düsseldorf producer Stefan Schwander, also known under pseudonyms like Antonelli Electric. or Harmonious Thelonious, Viktor Hugo's famous saying always applies.

Two years ago, the Düsseldorf producer and musician released a 4x 7" box set on Krachladen Dub, his first release after a break of 17 years at the time. Now, two years later, 9 new tracks follow as a longplayer on double vinyl and music cassette.

Even more experimental, more playful, more hypnotic and with trombone. Monotony is nice! The teacher is back in the club, teaching genres like house and minimal Jamaican dub deepness again.

PREMIERE : A Rocket In Dub - B-Boy Drum Machine

NuNorthern Soul label head Phil Cooper has stayed connected with Daniel Stenger ever since he remixed Abimaro & The Free’s ‘Mark’ back in 2014, as Phil was convinced that Daniel was capable of crafting something truly special. If you’ve loved the first two singles – Brooklyn Love Boat (Moods Remix) & Strangers (Atjazz Remix) – as much as I have, you’re going to be bowled over by this project. With ‘Take Care My Friend’, a mini-album inspired by the German producer’s deeply rooted love of jazz-funk, Stenger has repaid the faith shown in him. He’s delivered a collection of quality cuts marked out by audible warmth, effortless musicality, and memorable, sun-soaked songs.

As he makes clear in the liner notes included with the vinyl version of the album, the project began with the recording of luscious, Rhodes-laden opener ‘Alright’. After staying up all night recording the track, Stenger not only decided to continue recording with the same relatively limited set of instruments (think bass and electric guitars, drums, piano, electric piano, organ, hand percussion and a handful of synthesizers), but also stick to a hybrid sound that added a subtle Latin shuffle to his Balearic-minded take on jazz, funk and soul fusion.  There’s no denying that Stenger’s creative choices have resulted in a superb set of tracks. While the restricted kit list provided focus during the music-making process, there’s still plenty of musical variety across the six tracks that make up the set. 

Check the jazzy, loose-limbed headiness of ‘It Just Happens’, where simmering synth-strings, twinkling melodic motifs and glistening guitar licks rise above smooth jazz-funk bass and a gentle broken beat rhythm, and the slow-motion soul brilliance of ‘Strangers’, where Kathrin Kempf’s evocative and poignant lead vocals rise above a sumptuous downtempo groove and heart-aching piano lines. This subtly varied but musically coherent vibe continues where Stenger indulges in a bit of New York daydreaming on ‘Brooklyn Love Boat’, a wonderfully musically detailed chunk of 1970s style jazz-funk heat that offers knowing nods to Roy Ayers, Herbie Hancock and the jazz-fusion stylings of Azymuth, before opting for a deeper, slower and even more seductive sound on the Hammond-sporting bliss of ‘Take Care My Friend’.

Closing cut ‘City Lights’, a gorgeous, soft-focus affair smothered in echoing Rhodes riffs and immersive chords, has the feel of an underground classic in waiting: a stirring, string-drenched future sing-along whose emotion-packed lyrics are delivered brilliantly by Glasgow-born singer/songwriter Chris Pookah. Despite the song’s subject matter – the painful final breakdown of a relationship – there’s something strangely uplifting about the combination of Pookah’s pitch-perfect vocal delivery and the absorbing warmth of Stenger’s comforting and sonically detailed music. It provides a fittingly impressive finish to a mightily immersive mini album.

Take Care My Friend

St Petersberg's Dobro label is noted not just for the quality and playability of its funky house and disco re-edits, but also for its value for money. This, their seventh release, is another great example, with no less than six floorfillers included on one 12", each bringing their own individual mood to the table. 'Flowers Festival' from Sun Rhythms has throbbing organs and fruity keys, topped off by a gorgeous Russian vocal. DJ Merci's 'Timetable' goes for chunky rave pianos and Fairlight stabs, lending it an 80s Italo-disco feel, before Ground Plane Aerial's 'Transition SP' closes the side with slap bass and stripped down house vibe that echoes some of Roule Records' more accessible moments. Side two VIGI's 'I Am You', is the most memorable of the whole package, with its idiosyncratic female vocal weaving a magical spell around the listener, before we finish off with a double whammy of Monny Me's swirling stringfest 'The Name Of The Game' and the parping horns and strutting groove of Ugly Frankie's 'Free Alcohol Shit', the latter including a bewitching and unexpected piano solo. Great work all round.

James Curd is back on his freshly minted PRONTO label with more musical manoeuvres on the ‘Psychedelic Freak EP’. The multi-talent began his career in his hometown of Chicago where his vast range lead to a stream of releases on some of the electronic underground’s most recognised imprints; Exploited, Dirtybird, Tsuba, Trax Records, Classic Records and Ministry Of Sound are just some of those to have championed his sound.  ‘Psychedelic Freak’ is the third release to arrive on PRONTO, brilliantly maintaining the quality threshold set by the first collaborations with Marcellus Pitman, Marius de Vries, Jacques Renault and Oliver Dollar.

The OG sees the Adelaide producer in sparkling form. Hypnotic vocals rise over drums and weighty bass, as evocative pads and bubbling arpeggios combine to set the heads-down mood. Man of the moment Tour-Maubourg re-imagines the track as a sumptuous deep house groover. The prolific Parisian pitches the distinctive vocal licks against a solid four four rhythm, with luscious chords, staccatos and snares combining for an irresistibly authentic backroom meditation.  Adding a healthy dose of disco to the sonics, Swedish duo Drop Out Orchestra work their magic. Slap bass, funk-flecked guitar and horns are elegantly blended, the arrangement evolving as strings and chord progressions liven up the groove. Not to be outdone, James Curd steps in with his explosive ‘Mushroom Mix’, upping the tempo and adding live bass as acid lines drive the rhythm.  Rex Club regular and renowned digger Ten Fingerz joins the line up with his ‘Freaky French Mix’, reframing the cut with the help of deviant overdubs, emotive chords and thick synth bass over heavy dancefloor drums.  Closing out is the ‘MTS HER Boot’. Here the acid soaked ‘Mushroom Mix’ is reprised with the addition of Megan The Stallion’s slick vocal flow and vivacious lyrical thrust!
