Once again, Carhartt WIP Radio welcomes Innervisions to the airwaves with a mix from Kristian Beyer, one half of the irrepressible, in vogue duo, Âme. Since 2003, German duo Kristian Beyer and Frank Wiedemann have produced music under the alias Âme, combining floor-filling tunes with musical elements that go beyond the usual formula of house and techno. Their single "Rej" became a global club hit in 2006 and the duo has been travelling the world and playing at every major club and festival ever since. If that wasn't enough, along with their buddy Dixon, they also run the Innervisions label, currently one of the most sought-after names in contemporary house. Lately Wiedemann has taken to playing solo live as Âme, while Beyer deejays under the same alias. For Carhartt WIP Radio, Kristian has mixed a show featuring some of his favourite tracks from the Innervisions archive.

Carhartt WIP Radio June 2014: Âme - Innervisions Radio Show

Glenn Morrison & Brian Cid have been longtime friends and partners in crime in various music projects.  Whether it’s writing platinum selling records for some of the biggest pop artists in the world to writing killer underground house records which find its way into the most rambunctious parties worldwide, it’s safe to say that they are natural borne musicians through and through.  The desire to create something from nothing is a true art in itself and with their many years of experience forms a dynamic and deadly duo that is a force to be reckoned with on the dance floor.

Innervisions is the A side and it typifies the floaty atmospheric nature of the release.  Crunchy industrial drums juxtapose a warm and rich baseline tone, and a very smooth entry into the breakdown leaves us with a half time broken beat melodic wash to spice up the midsection. ‘Nu’ is a much more mellow affair, with splashes of melody thrown over a pretty four chord arpeggiated main base.  It’s a very heady record and something perfectly suited to a late night  after-hours session or pre partying to the calm before the storm.

“Chilecito“ is more easy, something for the dancefloor in summertime. The clap is tight and quick and there is a sunny mood waking up with the melody. “Malacura“ is darker and heavier. For anyone who follows the adventures of Circus Company through modern music, you will know we find it hard to resist placing our hand into the creative flames that ignite around the three forceful characters that form dOP. While their primary project has seen them grow into a taut, powerful dancefloor proposition, Damien, Clement and Jaw’s music has always been informed by sources that reach far beyond the functional requirements of a mass of bodies late in the night.
While the Aquarius Heaven project has seen them embrace a dubbier kind of house music, this release sees the beginning of an exciting new chapter for the three lifelong friends and collaborators. Les Fils du Calvaire started not with a record, but with a tour of concerts that found them replacing their traditional drum machines and synthesisers with live instruments, while Jaw’s ever-present voice swapped English lyrics for French.
Far removed from what they have created before, “Femme d’Affaires” is a perfectly distilled brew of seductive pop music that embraces a dark mood without ever being depressive. Slinky bass and sleek guitar licks meet with woozy, dreamlike synths, with an end result that calls to mind the finest 80s production work of Brian Eno and a quintessentially French funk.
In honour of this exciting new turn of events for both the artists and us as a record label, we reached for remixers who would do the original single justice. It is a special treat to hear Manjul, the Paris-born reggae hero, bring his roots to bear with a perfectly realised cocktail of delay, horns and weighty bass in a classic dub style. Moving back to their dOP guise for a different approach, Damien, and Clement rework the original into a simmering, acid-laced cut with understated drums and just a whisper of Jaw’s vocal. Acid Pauli take a more gentle approach with their remix, while Jacques Renault brings the heat with a jacking, crunching house version.

DMK: "Enjoy The Silence"

Les Fils du Calvaire est un groupe français, composé de Jonathan, Damien et Clément, qui partagent leur vie et leurs activités musicales entre la capitale hexagonale et Berlin. 

À mi-chemin entre chanson, pop, house et techno, ce gang de potes trentenaires, inséparables depuis vingt ans, mènent de front deux projets : dOP, trio électro, déjà auteur depuis huit ans d’une cinquantaine de maxis, d’un album et de plus de sept cent concerts. Et Les Fils du Calvaire, un trio de pop francophone, initié en 2013, dont les chansons à l’inspiration ludique et sensuelle puisent autant dans le registre de la chanson que de la synth-pop eighties.

Le groupe possède déjà un solide bagage dans le domaine de la production. Entre 2002 et 2007, avant de se consacrer à dOP, ils figurent parmi les beatmakers de l’ombre les plus prisés du hip-hop français, enchaînant les sessions pour Oxmo Puccino, Mokobé, H Magnum ou Grems. À la même époque, ils composent aussi pour le Malien Cheick Tidiane Seck, mais aussi aux côtés de Aquarius Heaven, Jamalski ou des mythiques figures du reggae Horace Andy et Johnny Osborne.
En marge de dOP, on retrouve aussi la voix de Jonathan, sous le pseudo de JAW, pour de nombreux featurings dans l’électro (Cassius, Brodinski, Claude VonStroke) ou parfois la pop (Piers Faccini).

Au-delà du hip hop, du reggae ou de l’électro, Jonathan (paroles et chant), Damien (mélodies) et Clément (rythmiques) sont autant les enfants de la Chanson avec un grand « C » (Trenet, Aznavour, Brel), les héritiers du talk-over poétique à la française (Gainsbourg, Vassiliu), que les petits frères de Daho, Taxi Girl, Elli & Jacno et Bashung. Ainsi que de plus lointaines racines qui passeraient par l’easy-listening et la disco. Sans oublier un certain humour décadent, une forme de dérision existentielle, que résume à merveille le logo du groupe, en forme de point d’ironie (un point d’interrogation inversé).

Nouvel EP, nouvel album

Après « Femmes d'Affaires » (2013), un premier EP à la nonchalance ultra-sexy, remarqué sur les ondes de France Inter et de Radio Nova, nos trois fils du calvaire ont enregistré leur premier album au cours de trois longues sessions menées au cours de l’hiver 2014-2015, à Berlin. 

Logiquement titré « Fils de » (à chacun de compléter la suite), mixé par Ash Workman (à qui l’on doit le son de Metronomy ou de Christine & The Queens), cet album, annoncé début 2016, est précédé le 30 octobre par un premier EP 4 titres mené par « Rester Avec Toi », une comptine de pop synthétique, à la fois haletante et polissonne, dans laquelle la voix de la DJ et productrice électro Miss Kittin, vient se mêler à celle, chuchotante et chaleureuse, de Jonathan. Un parfait préliminaire à un album, résolument porté sur la chose, qui évoque avec humour, élégance et détachement, les thèmes de la séduction, de la solitude et des illusions masculines.

Au-delà de Miss Kittin, et de futurs featurings, dont l’identité est encore secrète, ce premier album est aussi marqué par la participation du parolier Pierre Grillet. L’auteur du « Madame Rêve » de Bashung, et de chansons pour Feist ou Christophe, a co-signé quatre textes pour Les Fils du Calvaire, dont l’un deux, « Single Boy » est déjà présent sur ce nouvel EP.
