I wrote this the week before Inauguration Day 2009, one night in a rush in my basement, and I ran straight over to my friends Brianna Lane and Greg Neis and played it for them in their living room. The economy was in Depression-era chaos, O’bama had just been elected, the Hoot was in full swing in the basement of Java Jack’s, and I was scrambling to make a living, hence the “happy days and hard times” lyric. Haven’t listened to it much or ever played it live, but I’m dusting it off this week. Glad I have this recording of it (two versions, second is best; I was fighting a cold and mainlining Mucinex) from a Saturday afternoon session at the Music Box Theater, thanks to Tom Herbers. Ken Goldman on drums, Pete Christensen on keys, Tony Nelson on guitar, Jilleo Candyhands on bass, Eliza Blue and Brianna Lane on good vibes in the hall. (Photo and knit ware by Brianna Lane).
