Minimal bombs from LA-based, Dubfire-championed SHADED

Shaded is the new solo project of Skyler Taugher, one of the members of SHDWPLAY, whose releases to date have all been via Dubfire's SCI+TEC label, which speaks to his talent for stripped-down, big room techno. This four track EP bridges the gap between pumping, classic M_nus-style minimal techno and whatever it's more fun and modern counterpart is. 

Opener Sheshe has been a staple in label-boss Tiga's sets of late, a slick, energetic and eminently playable club record. Things get darker for Side Sippin and Jane Smith Goes To DC10 before closer Single Freax funs things up again in the closer slot with what sounds like a police siren on drugs under a vocal going “freak-freak-freak,” classic elements for effective party tools…

The Soulful Techno king Gabriel Ananda makes his Truesoul debut with a re-master of his 2006 classic ‘Doppelwhipper’. The package also comes with two brand new remixes from Drumcode favourite Marco Faraone and the hotly tipped Layton Giordani. 

The EP opens with Marco Faraone’s remix, which samples Kings of Tomorrow’s ‘KOT Anthem (Soul Vision Remix)’. This takes ‘Doppelwhipper’ to dizzy new heights, keeping the obscure roots of the track and adding a rolling bass line that will bring any dancefloor to sheer hysteria. Next up is a re-master of Ananda’s seminal ‘Doppelwhipper’, a track which has well and truly stood the test of time. A connoisseur of the uncommon, his curious sounds float through almost 10 minutes of pure hedonism. Closing out the package is Layton Giordani’s interpretation of the track that is set to be a firm club favourite. Pounding through the gears, this one will do some real damage.

Take It Back EP 

Scissor & Thread ramp up the heat with the debut release by Virginia’s deep house don, DJ Aakmael (@dj-aakmael).

Known for his infectious grooves and deep and intricate instrumentation for more than two decades, this four track EP is in no short supply of teased out, peak time, classic deep house.

The titular track wastes no time on the A-side with its hard hitting kick and springy bass holding court, while a hypnotic serpentine synth snakes along.

The A2, What Iz Deep House, is a lesson for those who don’t know what true deep house is. Woozy, edgy chords take the spotlight as a dissociated voice slurs, “what is deep house?” A relentlessly thick kick, along with sharp as razors hi-hats and snaps, throttle the track into peak time territory.

On the flip, Sands is an aquatic affair, with its reverb laden pads and piano chord stabs submerging the floor in pelagic atmosphere. The persistent, euphoric bassline bump effortlessly slides its hooks into the listeners ears before a celestial piano melody pierces through the depths.

Frank & Tony take things even deeper with their late night Breakaway Dub, applying their signature bass line touch and hi-hat shuffle in what may be their best remix to date.

Various Artists - Scissor and Thread presents Tailored Cuts Vol.3 

Now in its eighth year, Francis Harris’ (@cfrancisharris) Scissor & Thread label, his outlet for softer, more composed electronic music compositions, continues to go from strength to strength. Five records were released on the label in 2018, two by Harris himself, one Harris collaboration and two from other artists, and now he’s carefully plucked some tracks from each release and stitched them together into Scissor & Thread’s Best Of 2018 compilation.

The ten-song compilation draws from two Harris solo releases, his 'Trivial Occupations' LP and his ‘Minor Forms’ EP. Then three tracks are sourced from his collaboration EP with DJ Aakmael (@aakmael) as Frank & Aakmael, 'Mercy Of Means' - one Frank solo track, one Aakmael solo track, and then a joint effort, the slick, hazy groove of the title track. Then two Scissor & Thread signings both contribute a couple, with two from Melbourne sound designer Alex Albrecht’s EP as Melquíades (@melquiadesmusic), Blue Caves, and another two from fast-rising Nadia Khan’s 'In Gleam' EP.

As Scissor & Thread is a label dedicated to this deep, contemplative sound, it’s not a surprise that the songs taken from each release share a certain aesthetic, a carefully-constructed, richly detailed sound. But even considering that, it’s a testament to Harris’ curatorial abilities how well the songs on the compilation flow together.

From the deep, heavy ambience of Khan’s (@nadia-khan-10) opener ‘In Gleam’ to the closer, 'Valentino Mora’s (@ valentinomora) Underwater Rephase' of Harris’ ‘Minor Forms’, that draws a clubbier, more intense soul out of the original’s subtle grooves, the songs sound in conversation with each other, each building upon and contributing to their neighbours’ sounds.
