Returning to Items & Things with his first solo EP for the label since October 2011ʼs “VoodooVoodoo”, label head Troy Pierce presents “Softcore”, a four track EP featuring two original productions alongside remixes of title track “Softcore” from Bristol-based producer Dubspeeka and French DJ/producer Chloé.

A pioneer of the darker side of electronic experimentation, Troy’s A-side “Softcore” is anything but: a haunting, chugging peak-time production with a music DNA consisting of twisted strands of EBM, techno, and industrial, with a hint of dub thrown in for good measure. B-side “The Dangers With Strangers” is an equally powerful effort; its depraved machine funk and distorted tales of strangers provide a visceral exploration into the depths of hedonism.

Having debuted with a release on Oliver Huntemannʼs Ideal Audio label, elusive Bristol producer Dubspeeka (perhaps more famously known as one part of British group Kosheen) delivers a stripped down yet driven interpretation of Troy’s original, reinforcing the reasons why his productions have been exciting a number of the techno elite over the past year. Chloé - a recent addition to the Items & Things Booking Agency - needs little introduction. Typically poised between genres and aesthetics, the Kill The DJ founder and ex-Pulp resident rounds off proceedings with a remix that is as atmospheric as it is club-suitable, a reflection of her unique eclecticism that couldn’t be more at home than with Items & Things.

Playing with tension and release and a restrained but expressive sonic palate that paints a picture without words, these accomplished artists from the Life and Death team bring us to a place that seems to surely exist. Even if we might not be able to pinpoint exactly where that is.

The closure of fabric has seen a reaction that has been completely humbling and overwhelming to all of us on the team here, from over 150,000 signing a petition of support to raising in excess of £300,000 in donations to help our legal fight.

Support has come from every corner of the industry, with fundraising events at a number of different venues being held up and down the UK. This response perfectly encapsulates everything the electronic music community represents.

Both fabric Records and our artist led label Houndstooth decided a release that embodies this spirit would be a further powerful way to demonstrate the collective power of our community. We asked artists associated with both labels to donate a track to the cause, needing to act fast we gave a deadline of just 3 weeks in total, from inception to final master. The brief was simple, we asked for a previously unreleased track, either brand new or an alternative version of an old classic.

The response has been far greater than we could have ever anticipated, with an array of amazing artists delivering stunning tracks. Given this generosity every track that has been submitted is featured on the release, meaning an incredible 111 tracks make up the final running order, presented in alphabetical order.

Due to touring and time constraints many more artists could and would have like to have been involved, and we can’t give enough thanks to all the labels that have generously allowed their artists to contribute.

In the era of the playlist, this compilation represents a comprehensive overview of electronic music from the outer fringes of experimental explorations right through to music aimed squarely at the dancefloor.

Ahead of the court date which will determine the long term future of fabric nightclub we’d like to present this compilation as a document of this moment in time but also as the perfect embodiment of everything fabric is and stands for.

After fifteen solid releases, breakthrough label Items &amp; Things has a proven record of speed and precision in their ability to charge into the cutting edge electronic music market. This summer Magda, Troy Pierce, Marc Houle and the gang will take a graceful leap into a smorgasbord of original tracks with their first collective compilation out on July 13, 2012.

The four-piece vinyl box set is called VARIABLES, and comes in elaborate design and packaging, featuring a die-cut box from special textured material and 180g cream-colored vinyls. The track listing includes heavy hitting contributions from new friends, familiar faces, and Items &amp; Things artists alike.

For this compilation, Items &amp; Things invites a few new friends to shake things up. The New York hyped Throne of Blood creators Populette and Playhouse’s stylish electro dream team, Rework, whip up a special exceptional batch for their first label appearance.

Label compadres Jimmy Edgar, Miro Pajic and Andy Martin will make their second appearances on the compilation. Detroit phenomenon Jimmy Edgar first released the "Funktion Of Your Love" EP on I&amp;T in 2009, while Andy Martin took part in the "Various Items" release in 2011. Earlier this year, Berlin-based producer talent Miro Pajic also appeared on the B-side of Marc Houle’s "Undercover" single with his remix.

On the home team roster, Tomas More, Click Box, Madato, Danny Benedettini and newcomers Howard Watson and NYMA surprise us with a few new tricks as they unleash their summer sounds.

Each track is fresh, fun and tailored to the summer season, bearing unique and funky musical traits unearthing the producers’ personalities. Naturally, a compilation of such high caliber wouldn’t pass through without a corresponding mix CD and for that, Items &amp; Things has put Magda on the job. The mix CD will come out as a separate release on July 27. Furthermore, all tracks will be made available as individual digital download.

As part of the VARIABLES release, Magda, Marc Houle and other compilation artists will head out to the sandy bar and club spot Ressort on July 29, 2012, overlooking the Spree in Berlin-Mitte to celebrate the release. A barbeque will kick off the festivities on the sundeck in the afternoon, later shifting bodies to the dance floor inside where the artists will play until the next morning. ‘I Need a Guide’ is a tense analogue workout full of atmosphere. There are tiny little details if you listen close enough, but also bold beats and basslines which mark out hybrid house and techno rhythms. The track twists and turns in every direction, with chattery claps, skewed synths and rich bells: dark but alluring stuff. 

‘Next Exit Lost Lake’ meanwhile is a little more eerie and gaunt to start with. Raw percussive sounds are paired with moody synths initially, but then a bouncing beat asserts itself and the atmosphere grows ever more frantic and haunting. 

Continuing the highly evocative approach to sound design, ‘Slap in The Space’ is like another unhinged sci-fi disco off in the deepest darkest pockets of the cosmos. Taught bass notes, ticking, panning FX and crisp hi-hats all come together to make for a mutant funk that’s highly infectious. 

For his part, San Francisco newcomer Dead Seal makes ‘Next Exit Lost Lake’ into a sexy panty dropping remix which features all his own alluring vocals - it’s still grimy and ghoulish, but the sultry bassline really draws you in, as do the snake charmer style synths which weave about in the background. 

Coming soon on digital only - charismatic micro-detailed remix of ‘I Need A Guide’ from Les Freres Royales as well as Danny Benedettini’s stripped-down, raw-funk interpretation of ‘Slap in the Space.’ 

Voodoovoodoo EP needs to be heard: it’s a release which will confound as much as dumfound, and proves both Troy and Items & Things are heading in fresh new directions all on their very own….
