Suspect One - Ask Yourself ( Original Mix )

Acid, no wave and experimental house producer Drvg Cvltvre has been busy recently. After releasing with Chris Moss Acid on Shipwrec in 2014, Vincent Koreman then served up a full EP of his own, on Dutch label COS_MOS and is now back once again with a new four track affair on Pinkman that comes two years after he offered up the label’s first EP in 2013. 

Up first, ‘My Houz’ is a swampy house track with heavy drums, whirring machines and white noise textures all adding up to an intense affair that sounds like little else. Then comes ‘Tyranny of the Gods,’ a slow tempo but high impact track that builds and builds on a nerve lead synth line as frazzled bass props things up from below. Dark and weird, occult and rave, it’s another unique proposition. On the flip, ‘Sleepdealer’ is an unbalanced house track with taught, tight bass and is shot through with laser like synths. Serene and spaced out, it makes way for closer ‘Crack Spirit Guide’ which is a noisy, intense and brooding fusion of crisp percussion, big walls of synth and chattering drums that really have you on edge. Once agin, then, Drvg Cvltvre has come up with the idiosyncratic goods.

Cubismo itself is a reflection of the artist’s penchant for fragmenting and reassembling diverse sonic forms, borrowing its ideology and production technique from the artistic movement after which it is named. Cubismo 8.1 and 8.3 are raw, hypnotic, and dance floor-driven. Cubismo 8.3, possibly the most visceral piece on the four track EP, gradually builds tension throughout, overlaying undulating synth lines with distorted surface noise and pitch-shifted phrases. The series of Lost in Buenos Aires tracks, however, are ambient and, at times, incredibly cinematic, utilizing heavily-layered feedback and shivering harmonies. The overall effect is one of abstraction, cohesion, and balance.

The tension between the natural and artificial, the body and mind, are central themes in electronic music in general, and Techno in particular, as the means of creation, focused around technology and interactions with machines, contrast with the emotional response to sound, the mystical ritual of collective dancing, and the ethos of liberation and tolerance embedded in the culture it produced.

We’re navigating a world of engineered pleasures, big data monitoring of movements and consumption habits, and falsely objective representations of reality, further blurred by a reduced attention span and several opaque layers of cultural interpretation and political manipulation.

Manichean simplifications are used to create hate and fear in order to achieve domination and impose limits on freedom, and the irrational belief in endless growth, increasingly disconnected from nature, led to massive environmental destructions and waves of unprecedented extinctions of species.

Our primal sensuous perception, vastly more abstract, emotional and sensual, make us feel the world as an ambiguous realm we are part of, but not in control of ; a complex network of interacting forces and enigmatic patterns, a matrix of overlapping desires. Rebuilding our bonds with nature, Reconnecting with our senses, and spreading love in the process becomes an essential act of resistance.

Hyper Opal Mantis is a triptych on 3 states of desire, and the first long player of Kangding Ray for Stroboscopic Artefacts.
HYPER is the primal, sensual lust, OPAL is the emotional catharsis, a blissful desire for love. MANTIS, like the insect it refers to, is the destructive, fatal attraction.

Berghain residents Ben Klock and Marcel Dettmann link back to Ostgut Ton’s label launch in 2006 with their first studio collaboration in ten years and the extended Phantom Studies, on occasion of the one hundredth O-TON 12“ EP release.

With Phantom Studies Dettmann | Klock channel their first joined releases Dawning (2006) and Scenario (2007) from over a decade ago with their first co-production in ten years. On this extended, 40-minute 2x12" EP Marcel Dettmann and Ben Klock parlay their deep personal alliance and musical repertoire through emphasis on new functional Techno as much as hypnotic, melodic and soulful music by thinking outside the box. The seven new, original tracks reflect these attributions by communicating to the needs and expectations of both DJs and home audio listeners, but not neglecting one over the other.
