Lea Lisa presents "No Boundaries" #7 (Lost in Music Mix) Universal Rhythms

I think it would be fair to say that some people whose out put is quite regular suffer from quantity over quality. For Malik Kassim, the Amsterdam based producer also known as Retromigration, this just is not the case. With three records out already this year and plenty more on the horizon including a full LP on Wolf Recordings, it seems Kassim is determined to debunk the quantity over quality theory and prove you can very much be both. His records do the speaking for this argument, with his styles ranging similar to modern greats like Folamour and Kerri Chandler massively influencing off funky and up beat rhythms yet still maintaining that punchy four to the floor techy beat and its in these influences we move on the Phonica Mix 96; Retromigration takes us on a trip through many styles here across jazzy beats, funky rhythms, pumping house and melodic piano riffs, its very much a day in the Sun kinda party mix and he definitely helps us imagine that setting here.

Medlar is one of the underground hero's of the UK electronic music scene. An artist whose releases are consistently out of the top drawer, he is back again this week with a brilliant new EP 'Interrupter' via Jimpsters Delusions of Grandeur label. From deep instrumental club groove to Balearic house and onwards to 90's NYC cool it's an EP which touches on many different strands of house music but which ties together beautifully, A stunning release.

Seems appropriate to post this now, since it was Larry's birthday yesterday. This set was from a few week back when the guys from Levan in Peckham came over to Spiritland at the RFH for an evening of stellar food and music (ahem). This is my set of Garage classics from that night. Enjoy!

Bonar Bradberry and Tom Thorpe were christened PBR STREETGANG after a long trip to Ibiza. Ibiza is a second home to the lads as residents for world re-nowned party We Love… at Space. Tom and Bonar met through the infamous circus of the Leeds nightlife. Honing their craft at the legendary Asylum, which took the clubbing template and span it musically round its little finger. The duo shared a booth with some of the finest acts dance music has to offer, from Jazzy Jeff to Ricardo Villalobos. Much fun was had and many friends made. Many of whom follow them with great passion and zeal to all four corners of the globe today.
The pair earned great respect across the musical spectrum with fans such as Crazy P, Greg Wilson, The Unabombers, Clive Henry and Ralph Lawson. Their unique musical approach, never failing to connect with the crowd, threading Larry’s New York legacy to the Jacking underground beats of their Leeds roots.

Over the last five years, their DJ partnership has evolved into audience enthralling sets which flow effortlessly from Ableton live to the turntables via a piece of circuitry that allows both heads to mix together as one. The duo have a versatile approach of playing that allows them to easily adapting from big Festival stages and main-rooms to smaller basements and backrooms.

PBR Streetgang have released productions on labels such as 2020 Vision, Red Music, Futureboogie, E.A.R, ISM and Wolf Music. They are very excited by a forthcoming release on Jamie Jones Hot Creations in late 2011.

This is a trip up river you really shouldn’t miss.

"This 1 hour DJ mix is 90% vintage disco vinyl - mixed live on 2 x 1210s - accompanied by an analogue reggae doorbell generator with a BOSS Delay pedal, plus a few sexy idents thrown in for good measure.

Recorded at my good friend Mark Dix's house in Barcelona after recently playing the Curtis Audio Cafe in the city - we highly recommend that venue - the best audio set up in the city.

The name of the mix refers to the big black eye I am currently displaying due to an accidental clash of heads last week - yep that's me in the cover shot and that is my black eye.

One of our favourite producers of 2022 steps up with an exclusive 64 minutes of almost entirely unreleased material. Parisian producer @tour-maubourg has released an remarkable body of work in the past couple of years that connects the dots between his city's deep house and nu jazz heritage (e.g. St-Germain, Wuz, Cassius) and the contemporary jazz scene, where sumptuous 4/4 grooves and broken beats are laced with sweet vintage and analog synth solos and motifs. We predict the biggest things for him and are very happy to have him contribute to our long-running series.

*How would you describe your sound?*

I’m trying to produce modern music, mainly house, jazz, and dub related with an old school and warm feel.

*What and who inspires you and influences your sound?* 

If I had to name three main influences it would be Ron Trent and Chez Damier, for their vision and reflection on pushing forward the sound.

Basic channel for their exploration of texture and ambience. Their sound has a unique feel.

Nicolas Jaar for his abilities to touch the masses with non pop music. His ability to make complexity simpler so that anyone can understand his music.

*Can you tell us a little about this mix and what it means to you?*

I was very happy that it was only made out of my production. As I have tons of music I stick that will probably not be released, it’s a good way to take it out of my hard drive and give it a second life 🙏

PBR Streetgang are currently celebrating 20 years in the business with their excellent PBR 20 LP, a compilation of their finest moments which showcases some of their most celebrated original tracks alongside some of their exquisite remixes, including a few which have never been officially released before.

They are also on the road this summer and one of the gigs that really stands out is their appearance at the Wild Wood Disco, in Linton Cambs, on Friday June 16ht when they takeover the Paradise Lost stage with Apricot Ballroom and Mafalda.

@gleddmusic has been a fascinating artist to watch over the last few years. As well as delivering a constant stream of excellent music, he's also clearly a very talented DJ who holds himself to very high standards. His label @saintwaxrecords has been brilliantly curated featuring Tiptoes, Siggatunez, Soulcheeba and many more excellent artists with each release well worth picking up in it's own right.
