This is from an "inspection station" about 40 miles north of the Mexico border inland in Texas. Does this violate the notion of free travel in the U.S.? I was definitely not on the U.S./Mexico border nor had I crossed into Texas from Mexico. I was coming in from New Mexico from California and driving through the U.S. The signs on the road warned of an "inspection station" and said "all vehicles must stop ahead". These are the same kinds of questions you are asked flying back to the US from another country. The guy stopped short of asking me for a passport. Papers, please?
