Empires of Dirt is the new Ep from CASKO the techno alias of Chafik Chennouf, Moroccan born, Amsterdam based producer, DJ and head of Leyla Records.Each of the four muscular tracks are tensely constructed around field recordings of vocal samples recorded in the shelter where Chennouf works with undocumented people with psychiatric conditions. Chafik explains this EP is an attempt to highlight and address the traumas of the refugee crisis, precipitated by the actions and inactions of western governments that cause people from North Africa, Sub-Saharan Africa and the Middle East to suffer the loss of their homes and cites and to be forced to flee, to become undocumented in the west and to suffer once again, already in the new land but still traversing the old borders.

SCI+TEC welcome a new name to the label, but a very much established artist on the scene. Rumors, Get Physical, Saved and Akbal are just some of the labels to have released the music of Italian producer Lancaster, and his residency at Barcelona’s Macarena club, that now tops a decade, has lead to an unrivaled knowledge of how to exquisitely manipulate a dancefloor. 

This enviable skill for warming a room, building tension and atmosphere within the boundary of four walls, has transferred to Lancaster’s own productions. Intricate and precise, with minute and delicate movements, his music is perfect for those enduring and extended sets. 

His debut plunges us into the deep, as we go Diving With Sharks. Opener ‘More Music’ is a perfect, beatless intro that features the vocals of Mo Pink. Cymbals, synth and sirens, cascading and crashing in bombastic fashion. Quite the opposite is the deep, bubbling slink of the title track. Warm bass and fluid fx see the track flow, as a variety of vocal samples lap back and forth within the mix. The addition of stormy synth stabs however, keep us on our toes. 

Final track ‘Bubble’, is a sparse and spacey affair. The emptiness is filled with a solid kick-drum, echoing fx and a ticking clock. Which surely must be signalling the end of our debut with Lancaster. We can’t wait to have him back. 




TEC158 - 1 - LANCASTER - MORE MUSIC FEAT. MO PINK

Shadows aka AnD remerge after their unforgettable debut on Shifted's Avian imprint in 2012. The long awaited return finds its home on Leyla Records, in the form of four diverse yet cohesive experimental cuts that take the listener on a journey through the oppressive, the rhythmic, the funky and abrasive.

Fear Of The Imagination commences with a paranoid piece of intense, evolving noise and rhythmic splattering. A spellbinding sense of woozy psychedelia entrances the listener with deconstructed drums punctuating the piece. The improvisational feel to 'Leaves In The Wind' sets the precedence for the non-conformity that flows throughout the EP.

Track two, 'What If They Are Watching You' sits somewhere between Nine Inch Nails and The Sprawl, with rhythmic intensity greeting the listener immediately at 120 BPM. Masked and ominous vocals creep in and out as metallic sound design washes over the track.

Track three 'On A Mad Train' is possibly the groups most experimental piece to date. Droned out guitars and ascending synth lines create an progressive palette that maintains masterful musicality dowsed with menace.

The closer 'Lights Out' bursts with slapping synth lines and a distorted kick which acts as the frame for the bed of noise. An ideal closer for an EP that exudes originality on a label that continues to push the boundaries.
