Female Vocalists from Iran and Beyond w/ discourse @ Radio TNP 20.05.2023

There's a lot that's infectuous in Pakistani cinema from the seventies and most infectuous are surely the plentiful dance scenes on par with the best of sister industry in India - but here the dancing ladies are more agile, sometimes even serpentinous, less bombastic, performing solo and always joyful. And, yes, sensuous too, boldly flirting with the camera, clearly having agency while they lip-sync Nahid Akhtar's singing. Important detail is that they are almost always barefooted. There's dancing guys too but they remain in the shadow of their female colleagues. This mix from the early 2000s was originally called Barefooted Funk but it didn't communicate on the little cover pic I did for Soundcloud. But still, you can hear from the songs in this selection that no footwear was involved. It's light-footed and light-hearted, grounded and - again - extremely agile. There's loads of hand-percussion, bold guitars, horn- and organ-stabs and of course joyous singing. There was something in the air in seventies Pakistan for sure!

I've lived in Pakistan for a while around the year 2000 and wrote a few articles at the time on Pakistan's genre cinema, resulting in a chapter in Cinema and Society ('Pashto Horror Film In Pakistan' - Oxford University Press Pakistan) which zoomed in on the unlikely horror-film boom in Pakistan's North-West Frontier Province. While staying in Lahore I was lucky to meet the owner of a cassette store called Jupiter Tuning Center who was looking to get rid of the back catalogue in the back of his shop, many hundreds of them (he used these 45's to compile tapes on demand for his customers but demand for cassettes was declining). 

After assisting Edo Bouman in releasing a few Bollywood compilations (The Bombay Connection and Bombshell Baby of Bombay), we wanted to try and compile the best of these Pakistani tracks, but Finder's Keepers skooped us with a couple of great compilations and discouraged we went on to do other things. This was before everything could be found on youtube and I mainly played this and other mixes on the local Amsterdam radio station Radio 100.

Here are some absolute favorites. I don't know if they were all compiled before, I hope there are some songs you haven't heard yet!

Lahore A Go Go - Vol 1

Initially heading up Calgary band Women, Patrick Flegel began performing and writing music in drag as Cindy Lee in the early 2010s, coinciding with their debut solo long player "Tatlashea". Their music – which tackles themes of personal struggle, spirituality and love with a tender frankness – sounds like pop thats been run through the ringer. Dissonance marries harmony in tightly written songs inspired by the musicality and aesthetics of a misremembered bygone era.

I liked the new disquiet idea to use the orbiting speed of trapists 
exoplanets as interval or rhythm ratios. 
I multiplied the ratios by the the distance earth to trapist
as base-frequency (hope im right here). 
((9.461 * 10.pow(12))*40)/(2048.pow(4))
This root-spectrum is played in the beginning. After that every harmony is itself multiplied by one of the the ratios. This happens in unorganized order. The rhythms are all relational to the ratios. I only used sinewaves as they have no spectrum.

Trapist

This is a mix painstakingly done from a large collection of library 10"s that play at 78 rpm. The exotica connoisseur will likely only recognize a handful of tracks, if any. There's loads of tracks in a Les Baxter vein, while others have the exotica/latin combo sound of a Gene Rains, Arthur Lyman or Martin Denny. If you, like me, find the final image from Love in times of Cholera by Marques appealing, this mix is for you. Raise the cholera flag, throw away your watch, and succumb to the lure of the tropics.
