Seattle’s Kid Smpl has always been a student of dance music’s history, his ever-deepening catalogue showing off a keen understanding of over two decades of rave music. Snippets of jungle, garage and dubstep seem to flit in and out of Smpl’s past work, reconstitutions of classic sounds in a new context, often at a new tempo and with newfound emotional heft. On Response/Ascend, Smpl’s latest effort for Symbols and a proficient companion piece to February’s Precinct EP, Smpl moves beyond the confines of the UK hardcore continuum, drawing on everything from the hyper-melodic skip of contemporary dancehall to big room trance, all stuck together with a widescreen R&B sensibility. 

And whereas Kid Smpl’s past work has elicited nostalgia and futurist yearnings, Response/Ascend is a record distinctly of our time, a heaving, ever-collapsing mass that distills big room and home listening sensibilities into one singular space. That space is filled by songs like “Repeat Balance” and “Display Ring” that seem to clatter and bang until it’s almost unbearable, shearing noise and Smpl’s signature tortured vocal manipulations building over a saccharine bed synth pads. Meanwhile on the brief but brilliant “Focus Ribbon”, beaming major chords accompany a twisted, meandering vocal, the track moving forward despite a near-total lack of percussion. As a whole, Response/Ascend oozes confidence; the confidence of a producer willing to match harsh sonics with beatific melodic work and, more so, an artist striving to enter untested waters.

@et_aliae is a pianist, composer and producer who makes refined and future-forward electronic pop. Her newest track, "Sober," sees her collaborate with the inimitable D∆WN (Dawn Richard) to deliver a late night, downtempo jam that's as heartbreaking as it is lovely. "Sober" is the first single from et aliae's debut EP, Rose. The EP’s cover art was created by Berlin’s András Csuka. 

Raised in Singapore, et aliae was classically trained on the piano, developing an early appreciation for German musician J.S. Bach – his polyphonic textures and harmonies capturing her imagination and serving as the centerpiece for much of her studies. Similarly, an admiration of Frederic Chopin blossomed, whose romantic era piano pieces convey complex emotions within their simple melodies.

In 2012 et aliae relocated to London to study design at Central Saint Martins and a more contemporary form of her music took shape. When she eventually started posting early demos online, accompanied by imagery that playfully merged consumer technology with femininity, an enthusiastic fanbase formed. The tracks were undeniably special, pulling from influences as wide as dancehall and trap to commercial pop and modern composition.

In 2014 she released her first actual track on Ryan Hemsworth’s initial Secret Songs compilation, ffb6c1, and simultaneously caught the ear of Cascine. et aliae has applied her elegant, otherworldy touch to remix key singles for ASTR, Kero Kero Bonito, Lemonade, Anna of the North and more.
