A wise man once said: “Make Italo Disco Great Again”.His name was Guido Balboa.

From there, Romain FX, after having camped his studio at this Italian’s home for a couple of years in Hong Kong, had an epiphany. He made a track using this genius tagline on Boots & Legs from Australia and wanted to take this phrase even further. And so this compilation was born.

 Scouting unknown and more known talents, Romain would put together a compilation full of cheesy goodness for dance-floors ready tunes right in time for open-airs this summer of 21 after a long danceless year. For the first volume, A-teamguests were asked to partake in the adventure, we have Bijou, Franz Scala, Alberto Melloni, Doctor, Berny, Daniele Monaco and Romain FX.Expect cheese and more cheese.

Often I wonder what it would be like to be the river blistering down Dwight, doused in sweat and steam, hastily rushing to where the waters meet. She moves with such ferocity and ease, unashamed to be sprinting while being bashful to the untrained eye. Even when her currents are withholding and her roots are spreading thin, I know that one chance meeting in her waters will unload me from the mess I’m in. 

Up-and-coming French producer Less-O releases hypnotic bass track 'Behind Closed Doors' ahead of his debut EP Shenanigans via  his brother Simo Cell's TEMƎT. Recorded during the recent lockdown over lengthy night watch shifts, the track is imbued with dark elation propelled by a manipulated laughing vocal sample and drum programming akin to the dripping of water droplets, clicking like excess time of lockdowns gone by. The infectious breaks and cascading bleeps transform mid-track into a miasma of trance influences, through the lens of arpeggiating synth lines and vast space in the soundscape. This track ensures that Less-O should be on everyone’s radar as a keen emerging producer to look out for.

Futureboogie Recordings is calling time after ten years with a 20-track compilation that sums up the sound of the lovingly curated Bristol label. From throbbing arps and noirish guitar twangs to errant analogue blips and ceaseless, rolling grooves, it’s a different sound to what you might have heard five years back on the Summer Riot IV compilation, and certainly a long way from the early days. Consider Futureboogie 10² an ode to evolution as much as a toast to all the great tracks and the family of artists that have passed through the wide-reaching Futureboogie sphere since before the label was even a sparkle in the disco ball.

When Futureboogie Recordings launched in 2011 with Julio Bashmore and Javeon McCarthy’s ‘Father Father’, it represented an extended circle of friends close to the label from Bristol’s deep pool of talent and beyond – amongst them Eats Everything, Waifs & Strays, PBR Streetgang, Behling & Simpson and Crazy P. The reach of the label grew in tandem with its reputation, not to mention the endeavours of the team in other areas of the music game. The Boogiefuturo label became a vital entity on its own terms, carrying a lauded DJ Nature remix of Typesun which encapsulates two distinct generations of Bristolian house music at its best. DJ Nature, who cut his teeth as DJ Milo in the Wild Bunch days, has gone on to become a regular feature on Futureboogie, helping define its soulful, adventurous spirit.

It’s also hard to separate Futureboogie from Team Love – events specialists who share some of the same management. From their flagship Love International festival in Croatia (having steered The Garden before that) to the Love Saves The Day weekend in Bristol, the Silver Hayes dance area of Glastonbury to the Waterworks festival with Percolate in London, you can see the unmistakable Futureboogie stamp across an international spread of events now. 

Sonically, Futureboogie shifted its direction at the halfway point with Fernando’s Mid Decade EP. Artists like Mark E, Felix Dickinson, Kiwi, Lauer, Ponty Mython, Ruf Dug and Toby Tobias are of course still intuitively connected with the foundations of disco and funk, but their sound teases at the edges to shape out a more inquisitive strain of house. The remixers passing through the label at this time speak volumes as well – the late, great Andrew Weatherall, Roman Flügel, I:Cube and Ivan Smagghe amongst them, every one an iconoclast within the strictures of club music.

So we come to Futureboogie 2021, which lands in the wake of a sterling run of 12”s from breakthrough names like Theus Mago, Zakmina, Chez de Milo and Warehouse Preservation Society. Across 20 tracks, this expansive collection celebrates the same omnivorous love of grooves which Futureboogie embodied before it even had a name. There’s a moodier, freakier strain to the sound across the compilation, but the tradition of warm, snagging party starters holds true. It’s a triumphant note to end on. But one has to ask, why, and what comes next?

After ten years of producing music and ten years of being terrified of doing this : Tomas aka December finally releases his first album.

The myth of the first album can be heavy on musicians, putting a lot of pressure on artists thinking they have to craft the ultimate record, condensing and transcending their style in one perfect release.
Of course it’s not the case and it shouldn’t be.

It took years for Tomas to realise this and finally get it done.
Oliver Ho aka Broken English Club, who’s always been a crucial supporter of his work, helped him compile extracts from live shows, rough studio sessions as well as careful arrangements and the record slowly took shape : « DÉBUT » was born.

This first album exorcises his fear of confronting this format by channelling a raw electronic punk energy, showcasing his unique vocal signature, his strong minimalistic beats and the melancholic, romantic atmospheres he is known for.

But it’s also a tribute to his first loves and totems , electronic punk, industrial, sci-fi, ebm. It is a homage to where Tomas comes from, his musical origins.

It is a direct, simple,
forward, honest, powerful record and it feels like the beginning of a long series now that Tomas conjured these dark spirits.
This is only the debut.

Trippin Jaguar will guide you along with his sound that rides the line between lucid and transcendental.  The thoughtful layering of acoustic instrumentation and captured sounds over electronic foundations mean the intricacies tend to unfold with each listen, like a good trip should.   Acid Break is a credit to his uniqueness and willingness to push the artistic boundaries, with an unrivalled ability to bring seldom heard soundscapes to the dance floor.  Trippin Jaguar enlisted a group of equally experimental remixers. Canadian comrades Nathan Hall & Johnny Posh reworked "Glow" into a cosmic and spaced out number with equal amounts of tension and ease. Analog atmosphere master Oora is back on the label with his dreamy downtempo rendition of Acid Break while Japanese expat turned  Canadian live set specialist Tokiomi makes his debut on the label with a heavy and heady remix of Mar Sara.

Blood, sweat and a whole lot of creative juices have got the clipp family to this point and we are thrilled to finally have some physical tuna for the people.

1-800 Girls has been on the move of late with shows all over the UK, international dates in Malta and Poland and recently debuting on Rinse FM. This new ep ‘U, Me and Madonna EP’ is a continuation of his highly successful track U, Me and Madonna premiering on Houseum last year. To date, the track has almost two and a half million spins on youtube... Everyone remembers that little kid dancing fabulously to the new york skyline.

Three new tracks including the reimagined ‘Sundown edit’ of ‘U, Me and Madonna’ have that distinctive 1-800 Girls sound however a bit more upbeat and including killer euphoria outros. The second track on the ep would take any dancefloor on an adventure through the deep jungle. Wondering acid lines and some of the smoothest pads we have heard in a while, some kids may never return from the jungle you put them in. Track three ‘All Day, All Night’ is the magic tool of the release breaking up the soundwaves with this moving heavy bass line chugger. It may even push you through to the 13th hour of your Sunday morning kick ons. Overall 1-800 Girls has put some proper talent into this release and we have to give him serious props for his craft.

One take wonders... describes Toronto Based Producer, vocalist and DJ Korea Town Acid (Jessica Cho). ‘free form beat manipulation’ ‘unpredictable yet captivating swinging dance rhythms’ She uses a pure improvised and experimental approach to her music. She has also been busy making her mark appearing at notable festivals in Canada, from the prestigious MUTEK festival in Montréal, Toronto's Electric Island, to Guelph's Kazoo and Subury's Up Here. She also gives back to the community leading workshops on vinyl mixing, and electronic hardware for Intersessions and Roland Canada, respectively.

Her track WANT U is a housey, one take grinder. Throw it down in a house party and watch the white leather couches turn to black. Put it on in a club and see the freaks come out and hear this track for the explosion of sound that is it. It morphs from this jerk house stomper with vocal chops and a classic 90’s piano to that slowly melting ambient synth wormhole, falling away into the depths of the seshhh.
