K's Collection of Electronic Music

The weather was changing, a sombre autumnal breeze drifted softly upon the morning. It sent a small shiver up his spine as he wandered through the park on his way to the day ahead, crunchy leaves crackled underfoot as he walked purposefully forward. Only a few months ago he had been hear, dancing in the warm rays of the sunshine and the blue sky ambience. Now this subtle shift was enough to ensure that his mood was more pensive, thoughtful and reflective on what might come next as the darker months loomed near. 

Eversines is set to feature on a new split EP on Lonely Planets Rec alongside Caim. It's a stellar release which is as welcome in the headphones as it will be on warm dancefloors in cold months. This one comes highly recommended.

Following up to a pair of choice transmissions on Aussie operated imprint Vulcan Venti, Perth-based rising talent Hame DJ turns up on KOC with a debut four-track platter oozing pure elegiac acid vibes and transient, sci-fi-infused ambient, seamlessly hedge-hopping from UK bass to liquid jungle, through gauzy atmospheric techno and bastardized shades of Rephlex-style electronica.

Fresh as a cucumber, opener 'On 1' ushers its listener in a world of keys-loaded, faux-organic layers and rippling '90s motifs. Threading its way betwixt garage, dub and piano house, the track brushes an equally vivid and dynamic tableau of shape-shifting floor-ready electronics. Starting off as a further mischievous affair, A2 'Zoot' sounds like the outback cousin to Paul Woolford's seminal steely burner 'Erotic Discourse' but soon evolves into a top-shelf breaky chugger that shall jam alien radars as much as it should have everyone on the dancefloor down on their knees in a jiffy.

Breaking the B-side in, slo-mo drifter 'Nightlife' turns the tempo down to 'after-party sunrise' mode. Implementing a lushly arranged battery of swampy 303 arpeggios, soft-spoken piano stabs and vaporous vocals, this one's custom-cut for daydreaming with a bunch of friends by the Gold Coast's idyllic seaside. Topping off that otherworldly journey is 'Erosion' - a FX-laden, hip-hop drums-strewn slab making the rounds between sepulchral, Kraut-dunked broken beat a la Tolouse Low Trax and post-Drexciyan synth wizardry. Proper mind-expanding stuff from a producer on the cusp of real big tings.

Hame DJ - Sandtrax 12" (OYSTER23 - Snippets)

A staple element of high-profile labels such as Hivern Discs and ESP Institute, Brussels-based producer Andrea Mancini alias Cleveland (@clevelandmusicpage) has built something of an impressive reputation over the last few years, establishing a sound signature both convincingly unique and daringly game-changing, as well as setting up a distinctly fresh musical grammar that invites the listener to see under the surface of the standstill techno/house dichotomy through more complex but just as effortlessly enjoyable architectonics.

We premiere the A1 title track, 'Gamma' - seemingly a straightforward broken-beat affair at first glance, although taking an unexpected yet seamless slide towards sun-dazed weirdo house terrains. This is met with a dripping honey-like melange of dubbed-out synth ripples, distorted machine talk, and foot-shuffling drum work - resulting in a fine floor facing clubworkout in which we can at least use as a vessel of projection in these weird times.

The first release of Escape Artist’s new imprint is a various artists affair brought together by the power of friendship. After years of being sent amazing music by new and old friends from near and afar, the time has come to share this joy with the rest of the world. As a label, we will seek to shine a light on psychedelic music of all designs and the first release will focus on the dance variety. It is the label’s hope that the love and friendship that brought this project together will shine through in the music. 

Side A opens with cris. p’s ‘Lemon’, a mid-tempo breakbeat roller that epitomises the ideal qualities of a track found in an opening set. Playful acid notes and indecipherable spoken work glisten against a backdrop of thumping kicks and warm sub bass. Grim Beazley’s ‘Acid Leaf’ evokes a memory of crowded peak time floors. The song’s gentle introduction gives way to powerful 303/909 interplay and leaves us yearning to go back to that place.

Hex Editor’s transcendental breakbeat dreamscape ‘Tuesday’ opens the B side with expert precision. Soaring pads and swimming arpeggios provide the perfect spot for the listener to land after their flight from the previous side. Escape Artist & cris. p’s ‘People Division’ rounds out the release. A kaleidoscopic downtempo introduction leads to a groove punctuated with intricate polyrhythmic basslines. Produced during lockdown, this piece is an attempt to sonically manifest our collective desire to return to the dancefloor.

PSY SECTION was founded on stolen land. We acknowledge that this release was created on the lands of the Wurundjeri people of the Kulin nation. We pay our respects to elders past, present, and emerging.
