Halloween, also known as All Hallows’ Eve or All Saints Eve, a celebration and remembrance of the dead, or just a hoot on a dark October evening, running demented in Michael Myers masks blagging assorted goodies off of scared pensioners…  It’s also the launch date for the next Hypercolour single from Luke Vibert, the acid warrior from Cornwall, whose ‘Ridmik’ album this year on Hypercolour heralded a much welcomed return to the scene for the highly eclectic producer.  

‘Halloween’ is a dark, Pagan stomping acid tormentor, resplendent with eerie horror FX and ghostly chords.  Tortured vocals give Bam Bam’s ‘Where’s Your Child’ a run for its money in this chilling 909 meets 303 breakout.  A perfect antidote to those thoroughly fed up with hearing Michael Jackson’s ‘Thriller’ for the umpteenth time this October….

On the flip, we’ve two versions of ‘Jack U Whole’.  In it’s Original form, Vibert explores the 303 Bassline further, the supernatural vocal taking us on a twisted ride over the crisp drum programming.  SDC AKA Space Dimension Controller, fresh from a run of singles on R&S and Royal Oak, weighs in with his ‘1988 Vibe Mix’.  Quite literally transporting us back to the Second Summer Of Love, SDC keeps it faithful with a mighty jack attack and lifting the mood somewhat with some fathoms deep chords and deft synth melodies.

Luke Vibert - Halloween (Tom Demac RMX)

Luke Vibert is back on Planet Mu with a new album called ‘Bizarster'. It's his seventh full-length under his own name with others having been released on Mo Wax, Warp and most recently Hypercolour. Luke first came to prominence in 1994 with his debut Wagon Christ album 'Phat Lab Nightmare' on Rising High records which was quickly followed by the evergreen classic 'Throbbing Pouch' with which he cemented both his sound and reputation. He has released on Rephlex and Ninja Tune as well as major label Virgin too.

What makes Luke's music so essential is his rare ability to blur the boundaries between genres by combining his irresistibly wonky dayglo funk with a British sensibility. Put another way, Luke's music is informed by UK dance's history. But 'Bizarster' is no empty eulogy, it’s a hall of mirrors with a happy bounce, re-tooled with skill, and always with a sense of fun.

It's these things that make the hip-hop speed bleep 'n' bass of opener 'Knockout' seems completely natural, or 'Officer's Club' with it's funky disco samples, reggae vocals and joyous synths sounding like the kind of delirious idea no one else could come up with. A track like 'I Can Phil It' is a piece of sampladelic hip hop with a punning title, but that's not to say he can't play it serious. 'Manalog' for instance, which is sharp spiralling low-slung synth funk, a gloriously deep track, while something like 'L-Tronic' is top draw spaced-out electro. The title track's cut and paste space-age samples remind one of his Jean-Jacques Perrey collaboration and 'War' is the type of groovy instrumental hip-hop reminiscent of DJ Shadow at his peak. The album finishes on the fun-filled vortex of ‘Don’t Fuck Around’, a cut-up jungle masterpiece with heart in throat chords. Enjoy the ride.

I mean it was for luke's competition but when I was making it I obviously had other thoughts going around me ed. Was hard keeping it a secret from him, i had an advantage, i knew better than most what luke liked !-)  I gave the prize to the runner up, i forgot his name now. It's quite quiet becuase the sub is so loud and low, trade/off. \ Won the Future Music competition for the best Luke Vibert remix. The I Love Acid label and its parties are shaking up the London nights not based only on acid house and the abuse of the 303 in general but also covering a wide range of old-school styles and sounds like bleep, rave or breaks. The same thing that excites the Polybius Trax boys. As they are also an invention of Posthuman, Mark Archer’s companion at Altern8, who has participated in a compilation by the Barcelona label, they have wasted no time in organising a joint shindig and, in passing, inviting no more and no less than Luke Vibert, a prolific living legend of the more eccentric British underground and practising devotee of everything we have just mentioned, on labels like Warp, Planet Mu and Mo Wax. The most bizarre electronica on the planet will be on display tonight before your very ears by a truly all-star bill.
