Welcome to our 32nd Il Modo Exclusive Series, October 2023.  This time we are headed back 'Down Under' to Melbourne Australia for a serious belter, a 2.5 hour progressive mix from the wonderful talent that is Pete Gordon.  Thank you Pete.  


"Originally from Wellington, NZ, now living in Melbourne Australia, Pete Gordon’s first taste of dance music was, like many, stumbling upon The Prodigy’s “Music For The Jilted Generation” and the record store geezers suggestion to listen to BT’s “IMA”. This was the first thing to turn him away from the heavy metal, grunge and alternative rock that he pretty much exclusively listened to at the time and when a mate took him out to see Plastikman in 1998, everything changed in an instant!

Bouncing around in the techno and trance scenes for a few years, I was convinced to attend a proper house music gig at a time when I thought that all house music was cheesy radio crap like La Bouche, M People and Real McCoy…how wrong I was! The funk was electric, but there was still something missing, and when I heard progressive house, I knew I had found my home. It was like it had taken all the elements of techno, trance and house that I loved, and smushed them all together in a neat little euphoric and ethereal package.

I first started DJing around 2001 when a mate brought his decks around to my place and the vinyl addiction commenced with fury! Progressive, house, tech-house, techno, breaks, electro I felt were all fair game and always loved weaving sets that slipped in and out of different genres, shades of dark and light. Back in the day in Wellington I was lucky enough to support a lot of big names when they toured through our windy little city; Ali B, Freq Nasty, B.L.I.M, Krafty Kuts and the highlight was closing for Steve Lawler and Nick Warren on their CD release tours for Global Underground “Lights Out 2” and “Shanghai 28” respectively.

My approach to this mix was a deep dive into anything from the last 15 years or so, I don’t care if a tune is old or new, it’s all about how you use it and a quality tune is always a quality tune. Old, new, borrowed or blue, I love digging around SoundCloud for tasty free download bootleg gems and often pepper my sets with a “classic” or a modern re-working of a classic, there’s at least 8 of those in this mix…from deep to organic to progressive to melodic techno and spattered with breaks/electronica, I hope you enjoy the journey!"

Once again it is time for my year-end rewind, featuring tracks from the year's other episodes of Stratospheric Sounds.  Sticking with a precedent that I started last year, I played this set during one of my Twitch streams while recording for this SoundCloud post.  In this case, the stream was on Thursday, December 28, 2023.  Like last year's rewind set, I intended for this to be a 4-hour set, but viewer interaction prompted me to go longer. Liddle Rascal's no stranger to the land of trance and progressive. After hearing a CD with the 1999 Spundae Studio set by Hybrid in early '00, he was hooked. He danced from genre to genre. Breaks, Trance, Hard Dance, House, finally landing in his genres of choice, Deep Progressive House and Minimal Progressive Trance. After learning how to mix, he made a brief foray into the land of internet radio as a guest on LRCN's 4x4 Show on Afterhours.fm and a short lived live internet series called The Absinthe Sessions. Shortly thereafter, life caught up to him. He disappeared off the face of the EDM for years only to re-emerge, determined to resurrect The Hookah Clan and committed to spreading the Progspel across the globe, one set at a time.

In a quest to get in touch with his musical roots, he recently sprung on an idea for a new series of DJ sets called The Mixumentaries. This unique series gives the listener a glimpse into the mind of producers by spotlighting artists and laying a interview with them over the top of a set comprised solely of their music. He's also begun taking baby steps back into the world of internet radio appearing as a guest on Blake Baltimore's Abandon Logic show on DI.fm. Not much else is known about him other than his love for music. "I typically play my sets close to my chest, but it's time to get out there and start spread the Progspel again" he said.

According to Liddle Rascal, life is like his favorite DJ set... He's stuck in the transition waiting for the beat to drop.
