The dust it hangs like a mourning shroud
Where once the harvest sang so proud
I wrestle the earth but it don’t fight fair
The ghosts of my father linger there

I’m planting old dreams in barren ground
But the roots won’t spread where hope ain’t found
The banker calls and the taxman knocks
I’m tethered to time with heavy locks

The sun is cruel and the cattle thin
The seasons wage wars I’ll never win
I hear my old man say
"Son hold on tight"
But the weight of the world is a harder fight

The rain won’t come though I’ve sold my soul
The soil takes all
Leaves a gaping hole
I tell my kids
“One day it’ll grow”
But they see the doubt I’ve tried not to show

Over the years, blood, sweat and tears, ignoring fears, we kept running.
Back to the wall, stumble and fall, but through it all we kept running.
Never take the time. Gotta keep on moving, make those dimes
Keep on moving, we can’t lose anymore.

No need to rush - we can stop running.
Slow that ride, we’ll be fine.
Just don’t push - we can stop running.
I don’t think you fully understand.
Doncha know it’s time to change those plans.
Tell yourself again.
I’m slowing down as fast as I can.

I understand you had a plan, when we first began - we were running.
Getting in deep, missing on sleep, no time to weep, we were running.
Slow won’t get it done, still together, but are we still one?
Keep on moving, we can’t lose anymore.
