Up next on Soul Clap Records, the label that brought you the funk and all that stomping to move your trunk, we're smoothing it out with something truly deep. Presenting the break out debut of talented young David Marston. His roots reach back to his city of birth, Chicago, then spread to the island of Jamaica, where he grew up fascinated with the new world of sound around him. Early guitar training and eclectic musical influences exposed him to classic rock, the blues, jazz, reggae and dub; inexorably the emotive power of music took its hold on him. Now he represents the city of Philadelphia and strives to make music that combines varied, contrasting, and diverse musical elements in a manner that is both intricate and elegant. 

We originally took notice of David a couple years back when he sent us "Gruv", a deep saxophone driven bomb that became the A side of the Jamaicalia EP. Then it took over a year for him to feel ready with his next body of music, which included the future Deep 4 Life anthem "I Don't Want", "My Love Will Be Crying" and "Trust Me". For this EP we also have the world premier of Gemini Love aka Crew Love's three headed and two faced monster, Eli Goldstein, Gadi Mizrahi and Nick Monaco, who have gotten together to present a punky, funky remix of "I Don't Want". 

About his EP, titled Jamaicalia, in David's words: 
"Jamaicalia is a marriage of Jamaica and Tropicalia. I first encountered the term Tropicalia as the caption of a photograph taken in Jamaica. Intrigued, I discovered that Tropicalia was an avant-garde art movement that was started in the 1960s in Brazil. The movement came to exemplify cultural hybridity. It encouraged cultural syncretism: the merging of various and divergent artistic influences with the purpose of creating something novel and powerful. I am fascinated by Brazilian music, and the songs that are featured on this EP undoubtedly have strong Brazilian influences. My music, to a great extent, is the result of fusion; it is a creolized music, a pastiche of diverse styles. While my music is not typically Jamaican, Jamaican culture has had a significant influence on my approach to music creation. For me, Jamaicalia is an apt title for this body of music, because it embodies an experimental amalgam of world and dance musical elements."

We grow everyday as musicians, artists, and creators, if not, you're doing something wrong. Much of the music I have made loses its charm to me by the time it finally comes off the presses, but something about this song has always resonated in my heart.

Perhaps it always brings me back to the debauchery of the night it was made. Drinking countless stolen bottles of wine under a full moon with Tanner in Majorca. Aimlessly throwing bocci balls as though competing at shot-put in the Olympics, all the while listening back to our rough arrangement on repeat. Maybe it's because it's the first song I really sang on, and the words we came up with meant quite a lot to us, and still do... even if the lyrics are indecipherable to those that didn't write them. Sorry, I promise my voice and recording technics have gotten much better the last couple years.

But, it's been two years since that night. And, as much as I will miss the amazing audience response to those 808 intro toms below Tanner panting, after two years of playing it in the live set, I decided it needed a bit of a revamp. A revamp heading in the direction of my current live set, and eventual album.

So, last week I picked up my parlor acoustic, called my friend Andrew Lynch (amazing bass player on my album), and Dave Robertson (Cameo Culture, and my amazing producer over the last year), and we sat down to jam on the rough sketches I'd been toying with. This is what happened, hope y'all dig....

Vocally driven, with a little nibble of the guitars and a lonely trumpet somewhere in the distance, David Marston & Dan Izco remix of Fork In the Path by Life on Planets is a beautiful tune. Taking you from everyday life into somewhere else. Finally driving the thing home with a apex of drums, piano and some pads, this song is quite something.

Crew Love proteges Life On Planets deliver this week's exquisite mix and we're sure you'll have this on repeat all year long. The duo have prepared a lush selection of tracks that really embody that deep, sultry sound that we love here at Deep House London.

In case you didn't know, Life On Planets are a duo from Baltimore who have become tightly linked with Crew Love (i.e. Wolf + Lamb, Soul Clap et al) and have dropped some seriously great EPs already, epitomising that vocal-led, funky sound that we often associate with Crew Love. They perform live as well as DJing, and have all the qualities of a big-time future success.

We love all their releases so far, 'Fata Morgana' on Better On Foot for instance and also their brilliant track 'Fork In The Path' - a remix of which we premiered just recently over on Deep House Amsterdam.

In the title track, frivolous bass guitars accompany a broadly shouldered melody and gently carry the track to glory while a snug piano hides in the breaks, building a beautiful contrast. 'A Great Day to Fly a Kite' brings horns straight from miles high, happily intertwining with a ruthless groove, pushing the atmosphere and delivering a quirky impact on the dance floor. "Scanning the airwaves for their early influences and inspirations, the Brooklyn duo present a radio-style mix that charts their diverse musical background - flipping between Madlib and Miles Davis, Battles and Bjork.

Both accomplished musicians in their own right, Greg Paulus and Nick DeBruyn flirted with various genres and musical forms before falling in love with the innovative electronic music championed by Wolf + Lamb.

Friends since the age of 8, the pair were first influenced by iconic jazz and hip-hops acts in the vein of A Tribe Called Quest, J Dilla and Miles Davis. Dedicated to music, Greg started playing trumpet at local jazz clubs in his teenage years and together the pair travelled to Cuba's Havana to study Afro-Cuban rhythm, music and culture. 

Around 2008, the duo met Wolf + Lamb founders Zev and Gadi, and immediately began a fruitful musical and personal relationship. No Regular Play was the result and now the group's first album, Endangered Species, has been released to much acclaim.

Taking them right back to their musical roots, this is what the guys had to say about their mix:

'This is the first mix in a series we hope to continue called, Inspirado Radio. The idea was to include music that we listened to while growing up that really inspired us and shaped our collective musical taste and style before we started producing on our own. 

'We wanted to include many different genres of music, so we thought we would make the mix sound as if you're tuning through the radio and landing on different stations: jazz, hip-hop, oldies, college radio, etc. This also gave us a chance to do some fun radio drops :) 

'Hope you enjoy!'"
