Night Letters - A collection of ‘audio interpretations’ of telegrams from the early 1900s. Each track is based on a portion of a real transmitted message.

Historically, telegrams were sent between a network of interconnected telegraph offices. A person visiting a local telegraph office would have their message telegraphed by morse code to another office, translated, and then delivered on a paper form. As with any form of communication, the messages could be routine, melancholy, joyous, or devastating.

The need to keep these messages short, and then reading them many decades later, provides plenty of room for imagination.

image: a fridge magnet (made of fake marble and adorned with a tourist version of the etruscan alphabet) was purchased at the gift shop in the villa giulia in rome which houses the etruscan museum. I went there more than a decade ago and very much enjoyed mostly empty showrooms at year’s end, much to my delight. (actually, the poem is titled ETRURIA. For this album, however, three syllables  are mandated which is why I chose the name of the sibyl referred to, carmenta, who is supposed to have shifted the spelling of the letters to create the etruskan alphabet, later inspiring the „latin“ letters):

Silent rivers carry the weight of forgotten crowns, flowing beneath towers of faded crimson and bones of light. In the stillness, symbols fracture and shadows ascend, molding echoes into monuments of memory. The current meanders through unseen depths, and in its movement lies the promise of renewal: a hidden force of sacred waters that never cease to flow.
