Southern twang

Bluegrass is one of the oldest and most quintessentially American form of music, the vernacular of the Appalachian Mountains and large areas of the southeastern U.S.  I love the instruments in Bluegrass: the banjo, the fiddle, the guitar, and - most of all - the mandolin.  Trouble is, though, I cannot stand the whiny, nasal, male voices in Bluegrass, and there doesn't seem to be any other knd of vocal part in it.  

Fortunately, the late 20th and early 21st centuries saw a re-invention of Bluegrass, sometimes called Progressive Bluegrass, or 'Newgrass', true to the old forms but willing to experiment in new directions and with fresh interpretations.  I love the energy, the talent, and the re-imagining of the genre, played by men and women with some serious chops.  They can do the old standards for sure, but they think and write and create a new space for an old musical form.  And - no whiny nasal male voices, either.

“Spike had become friends with Skyler Grey a few years ago. When I first started working on the record, we were coming up with list of possible collaborators, and her name came up. Skyler just has a remarkable gift for lyrics and melody, and her voice has such a distinctive, beautiful quality. 

For ‘The Last Day,’ we collaborated on the lyrics and the performance: I wanted the vocal to have this specific, delicate vulnerability to it. The last thing I did to this song was add six tracks of Sonic Youth/Glenn Branca-style feedback: I put in earplugs, did open tunings on some guitars, put them through two distortion pedals into the amp, and just recorded track after track of feedback to create this weird subsonic wash. In it, the loud feedback is mixed really quiet, which gives the song a kind of atmospheric space the song wouldn’t have otherwise.”

Song Up In Her Head,” produced by Jarosz and award-winning engineer and producer Gary Paczosa, features a mix of her original new-old-timey ballads, and two well chosen covers, the Decemberists’ “Shankill Butchers” and the Tom Waits/Kathleen Brennan co-write, “Come On Up To The House,” which mesh flawlessly with the other eleven songs.  Her collaborators include teenaged peers, including Samson Grisman and Alex Hargreaves, as well as well-known veterans of the acoustic scene, including Chris Thile, Darrell Scott, Stuart Duncan, Mike Marshall and Jerry Douglas.
