LiT MIX 025 :: DOLLA HILZ ::

Renowned illustrator EZ.Naive reminds us with her LiT MiX 026 that she is also a wicked DJ! This may come as a surprise to those who know her via visual art, and even for long-time fans of her slow jams sets, but wow can she ever select and mix high-energy club music... This set is a great fit for workouts, creative flow, and warehouse raving if and when that’s still a thing (prayer hands). After a year and a half of pandemic restrictions here in Canada, EZ.Naive is here to remind us of how good it will feel to dance together again soon.

With a knack for juxtaposing jacking industrial club sounds with organic hip-twisting instrumentation and soulful vocals, her up-tempo selections here span a decade of 130-bpm dancefloor destroyers in the post-dubstep meta-rave realms of hybrid global techno-bass, 2-step garage house and breaks. 
 
We are so honoured that after a year of drawing Light Twerkerz LiT MiX covers, EZ.Naive has stepped up to join our series of selectors in recording her first DJ set in years, all without skipping a beat. And as such a prolific portrait artist of others, she has now passed the baton, ermmm, stylus and tablet to our new illustrator Sadé's Studio who has drawn her in a stunning power pose. 

Originally from Greece and now living in Vancouver, EZ.Naive is a passionate advocate for social justice and the environment, mental health, body autonomy and freedom of expression. Our 2nd featured Lit Mix from Bristol’s BootybassDJs is by Hannza, who has woven a wickedly-paced 90 minutes with heavyweight bangers from dancehall and hip hop to house and drum and bass. Laced with cheeky edits and mixes of rap, rave, UK, afro and global bass the genres may change but the attitude remains absolutely massive throughout. 

Algorithms attempt predicting our playlist tastes, but it takes a masterful DJ to intuitively craft a set like this. The cuts are confident, and selections are seamlessly blended from M.I.A. to Missy and Aaliyah, with a bevvy of Bristol productions from the likes of Lamont, Sam Binga and DJ Die to name but a few. Nineties nostalgia meets millennium madness and 2020s future vibes and we love it!

This summer has been a suspenseful stop and go, return and retreat from dance parties during these waves of pandemic public health mandates, so count yourselves fortunate if you’ve been able to catch Hannza DJing IRL, smashing it at Lakota Bristol festival Summer of Love with Shade Cartel or with Tash LC at Lost Horizon.

Fitting innit that we send off 2021 and welcome 2022 with LiT MiX 029 from BootyBassDJs founder Ngaio— This powerhouse creative force catalyzed our ongoing music exchange with her Bristol-based crew, which has kept us dancing all year. She is a host on Swu.fm, has released music on Durkle Disco and Archway UK, works as an inclusion consultant, is musical director of Bristol’s Bass Choir, and currently producing a Netflix documentary. Go on then!

With voice bodacious and selections outrageous, Ngaio’s LiT MiX features her original vocals and productions amidst blends on blends  that just don’t stop ramping up the energy. Her signature sound is a refined ratchet romp through the global booty shaking underground, from UK bass music to Afro-Caribbean diasporic dancefloor detonators. Pt 1. of this month’s LiT MiX double feature on Vancouver’s Audio Social crew comes via Lil Cis. This set showcases her love of house music, hypnotizing our hips through waves of deep rave rhythms. 

Shuffling shakers, congas and wood blocks create an organic Afro-Latin percussive momentum, within progressive techy synth sweeps and kicks for a very modern global club vibe. 

Vocals range from folk to woke including a couple tracks from Columbian diva Martina Camargo, and Missy Elliot in the same set, for a mix that is truly muy caliente.  

A relative newcomer to DJing, Lil Cis has quickly proven her versatile tastes and skills mixing between untz untz and wub wub realms of house and dubstep. As a co-founder of @goodnightout_vancouver she works to improve safety and promote consent culture in the nightlife community. 

With @audiosocialvancouver Lil Cis puts her event planning skills to work organizing well-curated live shows, livestreams and a mix series alongside crew-mates @thujadubs, @destratavan (LiT MiX 031) and @handsometiger (LiT MiX 004).

Full moon snowboarding to dancehall and dnb is the vibe out of Valentine’s into this steamy LiT MiX 032 from DJ @dubconscious ! We are stoked to feature this masterful set from such a longtime friend of the crew, who weaves Caribbean and UK bass music together from the slopes of the Kootenays on unceded Sinixt territory. From his early days in the ‘00s DJing at Thymeless (RIP) in Toronto with foundational Canadian dubstep crew Dubslingers, to Light Twerkerz studio parties in the ‘10s at The Web (RIP) in Vancouver, Dubconscious has been getting us dancing for almost two decades now, and you will hear why with this LiT MiX.

Hot on the heels of the scorpio full moon, we are mesmerized by LiT MiX 033 from Portland’s total-eclipse-of-the-heartthrob DJ Mr. Wu. Dripping with swag and sensuality, this set is a moody masterpiece that melts through the 100-120bpm range. Mixing fresh rnb, rap, 808 bass, amapiano and more for an hour of music ideal for both cosy autumn easy listening, and getting the party heated. 
 
A legendary west coast selector also known as the designer behind clothing brand Rythmatix, Mr. Wu has been a fave DJ of the crew for almost a decade. Calling his clothing ‘a study in visual rhythms’, his DJ mixes could be called ‘a dance through sonic imagery’. The storytelling is key— from rappers with evocative lyrics in the tracks, to the intersecting narratives connecting Mr. Wu’s diverse yet distilled multi-genre sonic sensibilities. We love this about his sets! The songs feel like scenes in a movie when they’re mixed this good. Rolling, and action...

There couldn’t be a more fitting selector for the first Light Twerkerz LIT MIX than the original west coast rudegyal pon the decks herself, the legendary @TankGyal. She has DJ’d the Light Twerkerz twerkshop and bruckout at Bass Coast Festival every year since the inaugural session at Merritt, British Columbia in 2013. 

Founding resident DJ and promoter of Vancouver’s longest-running dancehall weekly Ting since 2007, and core member of the mighty Lighta! Sound crew, she is true to the origins of sound system culture while tirelessly working to push the vibes forward in the present.

Turn up from staycay to slaycay with J.F.Killah’s LiT MIX! This long-time west coast selecta reps @dnbgirls and @shahdjs, and is half of DJ/production duo @levrige along with partner @erski1. So far in 2020 they've released tracks on @deviant-audio and @thedreamersrecordings, and a DJ mix via @footwork-jungle. 
 
J.F.Killah always catches our attention with her multi-genre solo DJing, bouncing through all bpms. Her set at Pastel Party in East Van at The Rattle early in 2019 was so bumpin’, after we dismounted from straddling the speakers we knew we had to ask her to record a LiT MIX. DJ Dem Ones delivers a lively LiT MIX of dancehall, reggae, moombahton, r’n’b, afrobeats and trap to keep us bubbling through winter! 

Representing #mightygang from Brampton, @djdem-ones has energized crowds across Canada as touring DJ for Haviah Mighty. Lucky west coast listeners will recall just before Covid closures hit last spring, this dynamic duo went in on a Boiler Room set at Vancouver’s Fortune Sound Club. Watch it on Youtube, along with their Caribana-themed music video “Ba Na Na” with A Tribe Called Red, and you’ll see how Dem Ones is more than a DJ, she’s a hype woman backing up her performing partner on the mic, dancing and vibing up the crowd too. 
 
We’ve loved the mixes she’s released this year including her Rhythm & Bae and Fusion Freestyle sets, and a guest mix for Icarus Sound.
