Long-time supporter of Sub Chakra, @richnines joins the mix series this month with a selection of footwork, jungle and autonomic selections to carry you into the spring equinox. Alongside @crystelclear, Eric is the curator of the @lighttwerkerz LiT MIX series and has been a leader in the underground music scene for 20+ years. Dubwise vinyl selector @richnines paints an expansive picture. Originally from Toronto, honing his craft with 90's Jungle crew Nexus 7 and 00's Dubstep crew Dubslingers. Rich Nines initiation to sound system culture came from both rave and reggae, with these influences shining throughout this superb selection of hybrid strains of techno, dubstep and jungle.

About the guests

@substance420 - Hailing from the East Coast this native of Sherbrooke, Quebec has been a major pioneer and leader in the pushing of deep sounds and sound system music and culture for many years. In the booth his deep and dark sounds have been an essential part of the underground Dubstep and Halftime for almost a decade, garnering support from some of the industries biggest names and labels across the world. A true head through and through he has also had a major hand in the growth of the deep community back home through his co-founded company DirtyCake which has hosted some of Canada's and beyond finest Producers & DJ's over the last 8 years.

Rich Nines is a multi-genre DJ with 25 years experience, originally from Toronto and now living in Vancouver.
He is currently the co-curator with @crystelclear of the @lighttwerkerz LiT MIX series and , and resident DJ at Art Battle live painting events in B.C. He and studio partner Brane are known for their vintage jungle vinyl b2b sets, and their trip hop trio project 1sisters with vox/synth collaborator witchythuggirl is due to release its first E.P. later in 2021.
Always on the move musically, in the past year his guest mixes have ranged from a booty breaks set for Ngaio’s show on swu.fm in Bristol, rnb/hip hop for Ayizan’s Mental Jukebox show in Lagos, footwork jungle for Sub Chakra in Calgary, deep dubstep for Lush Lounge in Toronto, and a genre-bending polyrhythmic triplet survey for San Francisco’s Subtempo.

Our last jungle vinyl session recorded at the Sinking Ship in Vancouver just before we moved out...  fun pulling some fave selections of hardcore breakbeats from the mid-90s and early-00s, classic vibes!

Originally from Toronto and San Francisco respectively, Pink-E & Brane (@richnines & @@b-lux-1) met at a rave on a ganja farm on Salt Spring Island, BC in 2015. 

Quickly bonding over our mutual love of classic breakbeat hardcore, jungle and dnb, we began sharing a studio in downtown Vancouver in 2019. 

Having fine-tuned our b2b DJing dynamic over many epic twitch streams during the pandemic,  we jumped at the opportunity to play IRL at  @donna-dada 's Jungle Bells birthday party hosted by @blondtron in West Vancouver, Dec 2021.  The vibes were merry and bright, and we just kept playing, and playing, and playing...

This session is our longest vinyl b2b recording to date, and very much represents our signature sound of classic hardcore jungle party vibes. Currency Exchange 2020_05_31 :: Black Lives Matter

LOONY TUNES 1979-2020

Studio mix of dance music spanning four decades all featuring loon call samples. This set accelerates gradually between 120-170bpm over 2 hours from melodic house and breakbeat techno into dubstep and jungle, with loon samples and ambience throughout. 

Recorded June 2020 via laptop with Traktor DJ software and Pioneer DDJ-SB2 controller, at Lake Muskoka, Ontario, traditional territory of the Waha Mohawk nation. With respect for the loon as powerful symbol across Native American cultures predating Canadian colonization and bird branding. 

I grew up having this naturalistic and nationalistic association with the sound as a child in the 80s, from the Canadian "loonie" dollar coin and Solitudes music kiosks selling ambient wildlife albums featuring birdsong for meditation and retail. 

Then as a raver from the ‘90s on, I learned to hear the loon call sample in electronic music evoking the Balearic bliss of original 80’s rave and meta-nostalgia for good party vibes. All with a cheeky dawn chorus rainforest romantic flavour perfect for outdoor morning sets from the Mediterranean to Cascadia. 

In 2020 the loon sample remains an enduring in-joke within dance music culture, embraced sincerely and ironically for sonic effect and reference across genres.
