This recording takes you to California's Sierra Nevada, to an ancient grove of Sequoias - the most massive trees on earth. 

Imagine walking around this peaceful place. It is difficult to grasp the size of the forest giants around you. They tower above, reaching for the sky with cinnamon-coloured trunks, often dotted with woodpecker holes. 

You pause to listen; small birds such as Nuthatches, Flycatchers, Brown Creepers, Kinglets, Warblers and Fox Sparrows sing from high in the canopy or among the low shrubs on the forest floor. The drumming of woodpeckers large and small resounds through the forest. This place is certainly heaven for Woodpeckers!

As you meander around the Sequoia grove, you hear other sounds: the piping of a Pygmy-Owl, a Mountain Quail, and the chatter of small mammals; Squirrel and Chipmunks. A party of Stellar's Jays move through, and the dark shape of a Raven swoops overhead on languid wingbeats.

As much as Giant Sequoias are a wonder to see, this grove is also a beautiful place to listen too.

Sequoia, An American Soundscape - Album Sample

Mei-Fang Lin is currently an Assistant Professor in Composition at the Texas Tech University. She received her PhD from the University of California at Berkeley and her MA from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign where she also taught as Visiting Assistant Professor in Composition. Supported by the Frank Huntington Beebe Foundation and the George Ladd Paris Prize, she studied with composer Philippe Leroux in Paris during 2002-2005 and participated in the one-year computer music course “Cursus de Composition” at IRCAM in Paris in 2003-2004. Lin’s music has received awards, performances and broadcasts internationally in 30 countries.

Figurations was composed at the University of Illinois Experimental Music Studios as part of a commission project in commemoration of the 50th anniversary celebration of the EMS. The materials for the electronic score come from granulations of a small collection of pre-recorded string sounds. They take the form of simple musical figurations such as running scales and arpeggios which serve as the core gestures for the piece. The evolution and buildup of these musical gestures form the larger architecture of the piece.

Orbit is the curved path of a celestial object or spacecraft around a star or planet. The eccentricity of the path and speed of the moving objects can vary. In this respect sound is treated in this piece as a moving object. Electronic and piano parts can be considered as two celestial objects moving either in regular trajectories or deviating from circularity.

Enigma

Enigma was commissioned by Duo Sigma, to whom it is dedicated. In the construction and writing of a composition, the composer often encounters crossroads, indecisions and moments of stagnation. To surpass these moments where the creative process seems to "freeze," the composer makes decisions, often based on pure intuition, or even chance, without having to justify them by any logical or rational explanation. It is this mystery, which is part of composing, that often revives creative life and makes new ideas flourish. This piece, in particular, has undergone this process in many moments of its composition, reason why the title seemed the most appropriate.

An acousmatic caricaturesque work for guttural sounds. Winner of the "Prix de la Region de Aquitaine, Concours SCRIME 2000", Bordeaux, France. Today it is an audiovisual work in collaboration with Pablo López Luz and it has been renamed Guturama.

Junzuo Li, a graduated student in the Department of Composition and Music of the China Conservatory of Music, studied under Professor Ping Jin. he also attended electroacoustic music composition masterclasses with Annette Vande Gorne, Jaime Reis and Åke Parmerud . His current research is focusing on the creation of electroacoustic music (mainly acousmatic music and mixed music) and explores the relationship between sound gestures and sound movements.

He has won several prizes in recent years, such as, the 2nd prize and the 3rd prize of the China computer music composition competition in 2015.the 2nd prize and the 3rd prize of the Musicacoustica-Beijing Electroacoustic music composition competition in 2016-2018.The Best Work of International Electronic Music Competition(IEMC2019) and the honorable mention award at WOCMAT International Electroacoustic music young composer award in 2019 and GENELEC Audio Visionary Scholarship 2018-2019.

In recent years, his compositions have performed in Chengdu, Beijing(Musicacoustica2018,2019), Shanghai(New media music Festival2018), Taiwan(WOCMAT2019),Japan(OUA Electroacoustic Music Festival2019) Ukraine(Kyiv contemporary music days2018), Portugal(Lisbon incomum-Festival DME2019),New York City(ICMC-NYCEMF2019), Argentina (Atemporánea Festival2020)and Chile(ICMC2020).
