I tried to write a poem about love and sugar, and it ended up getting sad but I liked it better than the original idea.

You were sticky. 
Honey-fingered 
Molasses-mouthed 
Syrupy
Dripping 
Brown sugar eyes 
That melted and
Caramelised over my skin
Fused to my sinews 
And cooled comfortably
So that I was sweet, wrapped in the taste of you. 

I stayed perfectly still while I was with you. 
I needed to keep our solid, comfortable sugar shell intact because 
I went through third degree burns to earn this love 
Let my flesh melt so the molten sweetness would sit more than just skin deep, love 
So I could keep this love 
Rigid and safe in my sensory memory
But somehow, you pull away from me.
Cracking, flaking 
Breaking into
A honeyed mess of shapes that piece together and form someone else, now.
I try and slip into that old skin and feel it disintegrate around me
I wish you'd never found me
Wish that I had never tasted that golden brown, please 
Leave me be or tear off every drop of that cuccoon that used to surround me.
Don't let me down gently.
Tear away faster like a plaster and look at the aftermath of the disaster that was me and you and look at how it changed me. 
I'm all brand new, rid of you, sugarless...
But sticky.

Sticky (Poem)

A list of things that are the colour of me:
A good, strong cup of coffee
A tall iced tea
A soft, familiar, leather-bound book 
Full of secrets, maybe spells, 
Maybe a novel you've thumbed until the pages are worn thin. 
Midnight.
My mother’s eyes.
My father’s hands on the steering wheel 
Driving me to the train station on a cold winter morning before school
A pile of autumn leaves on the platform.
Tables in a classroom.
Africa on a map on the wall.
A shea nut, cracked
 in the hands of an underpaid, overworked, and remarkable Ghanaian woman.
Skin, obviously. Nude, scarred, melanin-drenched skin. The skin that I live in.
A single shining seed
That could grow to the size of a sycamore tree. 
Chocolate?!
Fam, I am raw cocoa beans
In the aching hands of farmers in the Ivory Coast.
I am soft, life-giving soil
I am a forest
I am the curved, singing body of a guitar
Or a low, moaning cello.
There are diamonds that look like me.

Let me tell you,
If this body is chocolate it is gourmet, fair trade, 99% pure cocoa motherfucking chocolate.
These flavours are complex, rich, and deliciously bitter. 
I am not your palatable, digestible, sexual chocolate goddess
Desperate to break herself into pieces just so she can melt on greedy tongues.
Son, you would choke on a bite of me.
You would gag at the sight of me.
Don’t compare me to a bar of galaxy
When I am the colour of nebulae.
